A CAB that speeds up the Restore process after a hard reset!!

Hey all,
I have been working on and finally finished my re-install CAB....works almost 100%! I have modified my ExtROM to install only required CABS (no bloatware), and I have it also install my other progs (Smartdialing and new skin, magic button, Resco Explorer and SiriuCE). Then I have another CAB install the Sprite registration info and my settings, as well as my Owner information (so I don't have to retype it every time).

It also modifies the keyboard backlight timeout, Flt Mode by End Key off, Hidden Time Sync page on, and finally, it adds the new PIE shortcut and magic button shortcut to the correct folders!

It's great...once I do a hard reset, everything including settings are installed...the only thing I have to do is restore from my backup - everything is then back to the way it was!

That's all...if anyone is interested in this re-install CAB, I would be happy to post my CAB (minus my personal info) and instructions on how to personalize it.

Thanks for the help!!!

-David

I would love to see this. Please post it with the instuctions. I just had to swap my phone out due to a defect and this would have saved me a lot of time.

Does anyone know where the following settings reside in the registry?

The setting for the Time Sync Page
The setting for navigating noise on/off

I would love to add a line to the CAB to automatically set those.

Thanks,
David

Hey all,
OK, here is the list of things my CAB does. Before I post it, if anyone has any other good hacks that should be included, please let me know.

1.) Flight mode by end button > OFF
2.) Hidden Time Sync Page > Unhidden
3.) Glyphcache > 16384
4.) Keyboard Backlight > 60 Seconds
5.) MP4Large Video Camera > 19 Frames per second
6.) Sprite Software > Registration number and Name, All settings
7.) Owner Information > Filled In
8.) Pocket MSN on Today Screen > Disabled
9.) PIE home page > Sprint Users portal webpage

That's what I got so far. If anyone has any they would like me to add before I post this CAB, let me know.

Thanks,
David

First, will you include instructions on how to customize the cab file for things such as user info, Glyphcace (I like 8k vs your 16k), KB backlight (I like 28 secs vs your 60 secs), etc.

Here is one:
Remove "Message Sent" notification after sending an SMS This is the steps to remove the bubble notification:
1. First, you will need to download a Registry Editor to help you do it...
a good one will be the freeware PHM Registry Editor
or for those who got the Resco Explorer, you can use the Registry Editor that comes with it...
2. using the Registry Editor, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox
3. Next, click on Inbox (make sure the Inbox is highlighted) and select Edit, New Key
4. Name the New Key as "Settings"
5. Click on "Settings" (make sure the Settings is highlighted) and select Edit, New String Value
6. On "Value name:", key in SMSNoSentMsg and in "Value data", key in 1
7. Soft reset your device and test it with one SMS, and you will notice that the SMS Sent bubble is being disabled

I have two suggestions.
(1) please post in in a .cab format & not in a .exe format. so will can all download your cab directly to the pocket pc from the web.
(2) please include the time sync hack, that makes the phone sync its time with the sprint towers. ( you can do a search a to which registry need to be changed or you can take a look at www.shadowmite.com on which hack needs to be done.)
(3)

I'd be very careful to note this is for the Sprint phones and not Verizon

I would be verry interested in this. Have also modded my Ext Rom but I have been using Mortscript to do most of the things you are talking about. If I could do it all in a CAB it would be much better.

Has anyone been able to figure out how to backup the Exchange ActiveSync information so that I can just install a cab/reg file and begin syncing with my Exchange server again? That has been the one piece that continues to elude me.

I think it would be wonderful to have a .cab file like this already set up along with instructions on how to modify it. Thank you so much for being willing to do this! --T0V

Please post the cab soon...I can hardly contain myself
The reg setting to show the TimeSync page is below..not sure if you wanted it to automatically time sync or not...I chose not to...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\PhoneSetting]
"HiddenTimesyncPage"=dword:00000000

Restoring a backup is great as long as it has the software you still want in it...and the right versions of each peice of software....My feeling is that overtime this is not true and results in accumulations of junk in both the registry and file system because of incomplete uninstalls/upgrades....each new backup you do just continues to accumulate the junk...only solution is to start clean again with hard reset and manual installs and configuration...but that is painful and the cycle just repeats...

The cab file solution would start clean after hard reset and reinstall the latest software cabs and reapply all settings/reg keys to OS and peices of software so that it is ALWAYS clean...

I agree the accumulation would likely take a long time before it had any significant impact...and that this certainly is not for everyone and takes alot of work to gather ALL user customizations for little actual benefit....

still it seems like wasted effort

i have a backup file with all my programs/hacks/tweaks installed after a hard reset...if i restore to that point it will be clean and perfect every time...

now let's say since that backup image, i've added some more programs...well then...after restoring to the backup image after a hard reset, i immediately install those programs/hacks/tweaks/whatever and then make a new backup image to use for the next time. that way the backup image is always clean and always up to date.

in what way is the method proposed in this thread superior to my method?

Jeff,
The CAB that I am putting together will be similar to your backup. What my CAB does, though, is back up the registry tweaks and mods without having to back up the entire registry. So, when my hard reset is complete, all my application settings, registry hacks, and owner information/today screen setup.

I am sorry to all that I have not yet posted the CAB yet - I am making some little tweaks to get it to work a little better...I have also included some new (somewhat loud) ringers.

The other thing that will take a while is to strip my personal information and create instructions on how to modify it for yourself (especially owner information - it is harder then it seems, but not impossible!)

Lastly, I have included shortcuts for Magic Button and Sprite...I will leave those in but will add to the instructions how to remove them if you do not use those apps.

@schoenof - I have already added that mod. Thanks!

Does everyone want the SMS no bubble mod added, or does anyone like having the bubble pop up when a text message is sent. Along those lines, if this hack is enabled, and the text message cannot be sent, will the error bubble still pop up?

I will work on it and hopefully post it before the weekend is over.

Thanks,
David

it's just as easy to do the hacks and tweaks, install the basic programs you want, and make a backup -

next hard reset you tap the .exe backup file and 2 minutes later you're back in business.

perhaps this whole idea will save you a few bucks instead of buying backup software - but any serious ppc owner should invest in a backup software ANYWAYS for obvious reasons.

jeff,

You are exactly right, if you hard reset, install programs and tweak all the settings then do a backup you are golden...(after alot of work initially)

But what happens when 3 weeks later half of your programs have updated verisons...I assume you apply the upgrades/uninstalls on top of your backup and then create a new backup...This is were the junk starts creeping in...many upgrades/uninstalls are not 100% clean and leave junk in registry and filesystem....Then multiply that by 24 months of that...

For you to stay 100% clean, you would have to start over, hard reset and manually install latest programs and settings again and create new backup...but then cycle repeats...

I agree this is a "minor" issue...but if you can build a cab that automatically installs the latest software cabs and automatically applies YOUR OS and software settings then you are immune to the junk accumulation....and you have some fun and learning along the way...

Also this cab method will be able to be safely used across ROM updates from the vendor since it DOESN'T overwrite the entire registry...

As I said before, alot of work for minimal gain and definitely not for everyone

Tony

I've been wanting to do this for a while, but haven't had the time. I ended up just editing the extended rom config and adding the cabs I wanted. The only issue is the registry and file copy. I'd love to have this to tweak for my needs. You just using an XML cab?
