EARTHCOMBER? Interesting app!!

I just found this on handango under the new software titles. It looks like it takes some of the good stuff from google local and pocket earth and combines them in a pretty cool way. I just installed it so I dont know a lot about it but I wanted to post a link so others could check it out.

Smile Earthcomber

From TreoCentral:

http://www.treocentral.com/content/Stories/771-1.htm

A different mapping program for the PPC.

www.earthcomber.com

I downloaded it and installed it to my SD card. It works fine, but it will put a 1.1MB file in the main memory. However, the maps seem to reside on the SD card just fine.

As far as quality of the maps, can't really say yet. Just looked at a couple and they were O.K. US maps only for now. County by county just like Mapopolis.

Give it a try. Unlike Mapopolis, maps are free and do not expire. GPS support but I haven't tried it.

I posted about this the other day and got ZERO responses. After a couple days use I can say it is a pretty good program with a lot to offer. It has features that the affore mentioned software does not and works pretty good. Worth a look at least!!

If you're not ready or willing to shell out anywhere from $75 to $300 for a PDA ready GPS solution (bluetooth receiver, software, maps, etc.), then Earthcomber is, in fact, a decent alternative. I downloaded it and I like the UI, as well as the driving directions functionality. Travel guides, known as "Spot Guides," cost extra and I haven't yet tried those. You can, however, get info. on specific commercial establishments (e.g., coffee shops, hotels) as part of the free and included "Look Lists." Overall, a very good program.
