tapping screen to activate backlight taps whatever is on screen

I have the backlight set to turn off a few minutes before the power turns off. When the backlight goes out, I tap the screen and it comes back on. Here’s the problem: when I tap the screen, whatever is on the screen where I tap is also activated.

Before a hard reset a few days ago (spring cleaning), a backlight-activating tap would do just that—activate the backlight, but without opening what happed to be on the screen where I just tapped.

I don’t remember ever setting anything to make it work like it used to, and I can’t discern how to change it back. Could it have been from some app/hack I didn’t reinstall/re-do? Ideas?

i've always dealt with that issue - if you had a way to do that i hope someone else reminds you - me i just either tap the screen where i know there's nothing or it's almost always safe to move the joystick in some direction...

good luck,

-jeff

Yeah, I just learned about the joystick trick from an earlier post of yours I saw while searching for an answer. That'll do for now - thanks! Hopefully someone can still solve it, though.

I think that's how it suppose to work...because when you set your backlight all the way down, you can still use the device. I also use the joystick to activate the backlight before doing any taps. Maybe there was an app you installed that changed something before your hard reset?

Holding the power button for about 5 sec also toggles the back light on and off instead of suspending the system.

exactly - that's the way it works.

but wouldn't it be nice if you could set it so that if the backlight goes off due to being idle, the first touch on the screen would only have the effect of turning the light back on, and not effecting what was on the screen? hmm. i wonder if it's even possible 3rd party.

It would be nice...sybarite, do you remember which apps you installed that you didn't reinstall after your hard reset?

Well, I exported the registry, hard reset, restored from a backup just prior to my last hard reset, and exported the registry again.

Not only can I not determine any backlight-related difference in the two registry exports, I can’t recreate the previous backlight tap behavior. So, either…

A) It was a fortunate but fleeting fluke, or
B) I luckily always tapped the screen in just the right place and/or I have a faulty memory.

Sorry for bringing this up.

Just tap the camera button. The camera button only activates the camera if you hold it, otherwise it's not programmed to do anything. Your other option is a double tap of the windows button. At worst it opens/closes the windows menu. Either will keep you from an accidental screen tap.
