Yes, you will most likely have to use sprint's smtp server, unless your other mail accounts allows at least one of the following.
1. Open relays from any IP address (very doubtfull, spammers would find you and the server would be shutdown) less likely, an smtp server that allows relaying from sprintpcs.com, again pretty doubtful and dangerous.
2. Or, your smtp server allows authentication. Basically the mail server will ask for a username and password before it accepts your e-mail and sends it on. This is very possible as most systems allow this. You can ask for provider if they support pop before smtp, or IMAP authentication or SMTP authentication.
It has been just easier to use Sprint's smtp server, I have less problem with their servers than any others using this service.
