The 'hacks' on that page are registry edits. You will need a registry editor to enter them into the phone as it does not allow you to view the registry by default.
PHMRegedit is a simple and free program. I believe the makers site is down but google should find a download location. If it is an .exe file put the PPC in the cradle and run it, if it is a .cab file put the file in you 'my documents' on the PPC and click it.
Open PHMRegEdit.
example:
Quote:
Extend the timeout of the keyboard LED
- HKCU\ControlPanel\Backlight\QKeyLedTimeout
- The value is amount of seconds it will stay lit; highest without this tweak is 10 (dec) seconds
click HKeyCurrentUser.
click control panel.
click backlight
*scrolll down*
click QKeyLedTimeout
change value data to the length you want.
done. reset.
Do the same thing for the others. Dont do this if you wouldnt be able to tolerate a complete reset. There are a few things you can mistakenly change that could make the PPC unusable and require a hard reset to fix. So dont do these 'hacks' during a busy workday when you need the PPC working all day.

I am new here, and just picked up a xv6700, and want to do some hacks, but seem to be too stupid to get to first base. I have read all the " hacks" with the "go to here" stuff,,,,, but honetsly can't find it.
So please tell me after I turn my phone on, do I go to settings or programs. I have tried to use the search function and typing in some data but nothing comes up.
But again I am too dumb to find what screen I need to input this data. I am sorry that this is my first PDA, and not at all experienced in doing this. So who would be kind enough to give a square one "DUMMY" explanation of what to do after turning the phone on.
Embarrassed, but what the hell, if you don't ask,,, you don't get,,,, right?
Don't know if this has been mentioned yet (I didn't remember seeing it in this thread).
Save 700K+ of memory by deleting the \Windows\PhoneOff.wav file (almost 800K) and copying \Windows\PhoneOn.wav file (17K) to \Windows\PhoneOff.wav.
Here's another option.... http://www.pdaphonehome.com/forums/s...threadid=63814
Thanks to Sean48238. I downloaded the wav file editor he mentions, and then used it to cut out about 1/3 of the beginning of the sound, and applied a 250Hz high-pass filter. The file shurnk to 121K, and the difference in sound is not significant to me - it's the end of the sound that I "remember" and identify with the action.
If your bored of your background picture, and you want to have something different, I came across a website that has free background images with many hi-res pictures. They have quite a few to choose from.
I posted this thread last night, and I figured it would be something some people may enjoy or can put into use. I personally didn't know of some of these sites existing for the mobile Pocket PC.
I've decided to post some sites that I came across that some of you might be interested in. I've listed 3 Portals and some PPC Friendly Sites I have saved in my favorites.
I use to use AVANTGO on my Dell Axim, just because I had no way to connect to internet live. Since I've owned my 6700, there is no better way to surf with a ppc then with PocketPC friendly websites....it beats having to scroll left and right to read contents.
Portals contain categories such as sports, news, games, entertainment, etc. Once you select the category, you will have a list of sites. Just click on the site you want to view, and if it is something you are interested in visiting, just put it in your mobile favorites. I personally checked them out using my PC at home, and just placed the ones I liked in my favorites under mobile favorites which sync to my 6700. I have also placed a few of my favorites sites below the portal links.
NOTE: THESE PORTALS ARE PocketPC FRIENDLY AS WELL.
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned skweezer. it shrinks non pda friendly sites into quick loading pda friendly size. With free registration you can save favorites to skweezer. It is particularly good with Opera. In skweezer I went to Advanced Preferences and checked everything.
I reprogrammed my explorer button to email. Advantage: if you have more than one email account, you can hit it multiple times to scroll through your different mailboxes and sms. Really convenient, us VC to open explorer
Here's the fix zen mentioned from the IE on PPC 6700 thread. Just to save you some time, you can't edit the file in pocket word unless you use Resco File Explorer (or some other utilty with the same functionality).
Update:
Someone else on that thread mentioned that editing the file by browsing to it while it is synced from your desktop computer should work. This may be true, but it looks like it is not easily done without some tweaking.

Ok, I figured this one out - and it works great. But best of all its simple. Instead of trying to edit the .lnk file, which is a ______, just goto the desired homepage, (I use google), save it as a favorite, and then copy the link from favorites to your windows directory. Then rename the existing default.htm file in the same directory to [insertnamehere].htm. finally, rename the favorite file you copied to default.htm.
I've tested and retested - survives a soft reboot but don't ever open the old renamed default.htm file because it will automatically resync to that file and you'll have to repeat the process from scratch.
EDIT: Make sure you read the whole thread that is linked to in this post. Don't install the first files you see...you want the latest. Currently Kokkos has modified Paul_Hammons' smartdialer files into a .cab file and offered his own skins. This is the best solution but there is still an error with the EVDO arrows (when vision is connected) not correctly displaying whether the connection is active or dormant. The radio is still working fine but the arrows get stuck on either white or gray and do not change. Hopefully there will be a fix soon but the benefits of smartdialer outweigh this minor problem.
ALSO. BEWARE. Once you install the smartdialer it CANNOT be uninstalled at this point. The skin can be uninstalled and will work without smartdialer.
enable smartdialing - thanks to "Paul_Hammons" for his EXCELLENT work in figuring this out - certainly one of the best hacks to date for this phone. this is a MUST HAVE.
thanks paul!,

PPC 6700 is now my TV remote control and favorite paperweight lol
I got the BSOD today and remembered having read it. It's not exacctly easy navigating around on a black-on-black screen. But when you figure out how to do StartUp>Settings>System>Backlight and then toggle the top checkbox... WHAM! You're out of the woods and out of the dark. And it's a much easier fix than any of the alternatives.
If the backlight setting for external power goes to "0" (like when you switch batteries), after turning on the 6700, just hold down the top power button for about 2-3 seconds and that will kick the backlight setting up to 100 % again.
***** Warning - Always backup your registry before making changes *****
1. Backup your registry
2. Open Regedit Program
3. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
4. FOLDERS TO MODIFY "htmfile, htmlfile, http and https"
5. Go to DefaultIcon Folder "this is in all folder's listed above"
6. Change value to ( \Windows\iexplore.exe, -101 )
7. Save changes and go back one folder
8. Go to Shell Folder
9. Then go to Open Folder
10. Then go to Command Folder
11. Change default value to ( \Windows\iexplore.exe %1 )
12. Do this for Folders "htmfile, htmlfile, http and https"
13. Soft reset is not required for changes to become effective but you
should do one anyway
There may be more associations but these were the ones preventing me from clicking on links and getting program opening errors. Good luck.
Requirements:
* BT adapter on your Laptop or Desktop
* Sprint Power Vision - EVDO services
* Username and Password for Vision Services
If you do not know what your vision username is log onto
your sprint account and go to my personal information.
Click modify on Power Vision Username and write down your
username and cancel on changes. Change your password to
something you'll remember. After changing your password
turn on your PPC6700 and go to your phone. Click on menu
and then go to options. Go to the Services tab and highlight
Internet and click get settings. This will update you phone
with the new password.
On your PC or Laptop go to My Bluetooth Places and pair your PPC6700
with your computer. Do a search for available services on your PPC6700.
It should find a Bluetooth Dial up Adapter. If it doesn't make sure
you PPC's Bluetooth discovery mode is checked. This allows other
devices to detect services avalilable on that device. Once it finds
the bluetooth dialup adapter right click on it and click connect. It will
bring up a dial up manager which will ask for username, password and
number to dial. The number to sprint vision is #777. Now you can click
connect and it will attempt to utilize the DUN modem in your PPC6700.
Sometimes it will not intialize the modem first go around so just click
retry.
This method does not require you to use the wireless modem application
on your PPC6700. That application is good for connecting via USB but
does not work well with BT. Also that method allows Sprint network
the ability differentiate between using your device as a wireless
modem versus normal cellular line connection. Using the wireless modem
application requires a special sprint plan on top of Power vision. My
method is a work around. That special sprint plan I'm referring to is called
"phone as wireless modem plan"
Warning**** This method may incur additional data charges from what I was told by the advance technical support team because currently they are not capable of knowing the method to which you connect so they monitor site locations you hit to determinine if that's a site that you PIE would not be able to access due to it's limitations. This can be battled as I did when I told them about third party internet browers that I'm running that allows users to access virtually any website out there. good luck
Making Voice Command and BT Headset a little easier
If this has already been posted or is widely known my apologies. I was getting irritated with having to push the headset button to get a tone before using VC. I found that just pushing the hardkey (in most cases the "windows" button) I could say my command to the phone and then it would open the BT gateway as the call initiated. Maybe not the biggest thing in the world but makes my life a little easier.
