how does 6700 perform as a phone and for watching streaming video??
I know I could probably find some of this in searches and old posts, but theres such an abundance of information that it's rather daunting and intimidating, so forgive me for making this new thread
I have two primary purposes for wanting to purchase a PDA Phone.
1. Use as a phone
2. Betting on horse races, and watching the streams of races some sites offer.
So, my questions are these..
Q1. How good is this as an actual phone? Hard to talk on? Hear? I know dialing can be a little bit of a pain, but other than that, I'd like input!
Q2. Is there any trouble with watching video from a website on this device? Watching my horses race from anywhere, anytime is something I definitely want to be able to do.
Thanks in advance, I appreciate any and all responses. And if I do end up purchasing one, I'll definitely be on these boards alot.
It's a fine phone in my opinion--at least in terms of what you're interested in--ease of talking and listening. Dialing using the touch screen is a bit tougher than a phone with a hardware numeric keypad, but you get used to it. And if you purchase and install Microsoft Voice Command then you can do all of your dialing by voice.
As for streaming video, it just totally depends on the particular sites you're visiting and what format they use for their streaming media.
I would say your best bet is to go down to Verizon and demo the phone, or buy one on a new line to get the trial period and just put it through its paces. That way you'll be sure if it can handle the things you want to do with it.
The XV6700 streams very well. But the problem is hard to find a good streaming site. There are many streaming sites out there. But most of them are for desktop PC and not for PocketPC.
I purchased the PocketStreamer Pro from PocketGear over the weekend, hoping that I can watch some streaming TV or news. But I am disappointed. Many of the links have error of "cannot find the file" and many of the links run just a few seconds and then stop for no reason. I have to click on the run button to connect again. But again it runs for a few seconds and die. It is very frustrating to use.
If anyone know a great streaming video site for PocketPC, please share with us.
i own the verizon xv-6700 and comming from the lg 4500, i think i actually get better call reception than i used to. imho, as a phone it performs much better than i expected. the only real downside in the phone department is that the speakerphone is garbage. and like someone stated before its slightly harder to dial than a phone with a numeric keypad. as far as streaming, the only site i watch video from is www.truthout.com and i watch it flawlessly on my phone.
I use Orb. It's free and easy to install. You need a TV Tuner card in your PC at home, and the software loaded on (free). When your home PC boots up, the Orb software runs in the background. Go to your PDA or Laptop, or any remote device and sign into your free Orb account. You can stream every channel that your home cable signal gets. For me, it's great. I have Sprint, and the software (Orb) automatically picks the best speed you are getting. It's pain free...and it only costs use a TV Tuner Card, which is about $60. The only downfall is that you have to have your home PC on to communicate to your Orb account & stream the TV channels you want. The software is at orb.com

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, truthout.com is way too politically-driven and way too one-sided for me. It is not a good source for news. I like to get news information from relatively neutral and unbiased sources.

Yes. I have read from all the online forums that many people are using Orb. However, I have reservation of leaving my home computer "always on" to wait for connection. I could be wrong on this, but I afraid it might be providing an entry point for potential hackers.
Furthermore, can the transfer signals be intercepted by someone with a sniffer? How secured is it?
It streams video very well. I have been using Orb to stream Olympic hockey games to my 6700 for the last couple of days and I would guess I am getting about 20fps with almost no buffering. It's definitely smooth enough to watch a hockey game. Also what's nice is I am using TCPMP for my video player and one touch on the screen and it automatically full screens it in landscape, giving me an awesome mini-TV.
Connect it to the USB charger on my laptop and I am enjoying 8+ hours straight of streaming TV while working.
