Sprint #777 - calls go straight to voicemail??

I was curious if anyone else is running into this problem.

I was told that if you connect to #777, that you should still be able to receive and answer phone calls. Mine doesn't.

When ever I am using the internet #777, and I call my cell phone from another phone, it sends me straight to voicemail without a ring what so ever. I left a voicemail to test it, and then phone did alert me immediately of the voicemail, but I would have never known anyone called until the voicemail alert popped up.

Any ideas ???? I can't be missing phone calls like this.

MIKE

Are you on 1X or EVDO? While in a 1X coverage area, phone calls will go to voicemail. If on EVDO, you should be able to recieve calls while you are dialed up.

I am on constant EVDO connection and I never missed a phone call. Sounds like you are on 1x.

For whatever reason I cannot receive a call when I'm using EVDO. I have experimented over and over and I know I'm connected through EVDO, not 1X.

The phone vibrates and informs me there is a call. When I try to answer it it instantly kicks the caller into voicemail. The incoming call does break my EVDO connection yet I can't answer. Annoying!

When I try to resume EVDO, the phone tells me "Cannot connect. End the current phone call and try again". The only way I can get back on EVDO is to reset or toggle flight mode off and than back on.

Any ideas?

fwiw, somewhere there's registry hack that will allow you to disconnect from 1x by holding down the red "end call" button. I used it on my 6600, but don't need it now that i have evdo. I i live between cincy and dayton and seem to be on evdo almost all the time. I take it you live somewhat far from the highway and the city centers?

Right...

I live between cincy and columbus in small town area.

Yah i did the registry hack, all i have to do is click on the connection and there is a button that pops up as an option to disconnect. I'm already using that, but I've missed several calls while being online. A little frustrating, but I guess thats the only means I have for now.

thanks
MIKE

Same here...

I noticed the same thing just recently when people said they couldn't get through to me. I also noticed that voicemail does get through. Odd double-standard?

Any ideas on this? Hamsup maybe? I can confirm positively that when I'm using EVDO I cannot receive phone calls even though the phone will vibrate to alert me one is coming in. I know I'm using EVDO. Could this be a problem with the hack to add a "disconnect" button when using EVDO?

@spanishcop - I feel your pain. I put up with that the entire time I had the PPC6600. In fact, the biggest reason I wanted an EV-DO PDA was so that I could still receive calls. Since this is my primary phone and data device I need to be able to get calls as much as possible. Thankfully, EV-DO provides that capability. Does your area show up on Sprint's EV-DO map as future EV-DO coverage?

@Ectropian - The voicemail flag is sent over a different channel (same that SMS uses, I believe). This channel can coexist with a voice or data call. This is why the VM can show up even while you've got the phone engaged.

@mbartels - Well did it ever work? There are a few possibilities here. Either Sprint has a tower misconfiguration problem in your area, or you've got a software problem with the phone, or you've got a hardware problem with the phone. First off, change your ringer to an actual ringer and see if that makes any difference (maybe the vibrating is delayed and you're trying to answer the call once it's timed out to VM). If no luck there, you may want to try a hard reset to see if the capability comes back. If it does not then you know it's a tower or a phone hardware problem. At that point you should RMA the phone with Sprint or take it down to a Sprint store and see if they can verify that another 6700 does work correctly.

The "disconnect button" hack does not cause this behavior (I've used it on the 6700 and the 6600 before it for a year now). But if you've done any other hacks (especially ones in the CDMA phone settings) you may want to consider reversing them to see if that solves your problem.

Luv 2 Chill,

I turned the ringer on and the same problem happens unfortunately. I don't think I've ever been able to answer while on EVDO but I don't honestly remember for 100% sure. I did hard reset my phone over the weekend and tried it with no extra application and it didn't work then either.

What do you mean by RMA the phone with Sprint? I'm not familiar with that terminology.

I have done many hacks but all related to the speed of the OS (disable windows animation, GLYPH cache, etc... Do you think the flight mode hack (disabling it) could cause this?

Thanks for your help! It is much appreciated!

Your problem seems to be different from the original poster. Like luv2chill said, the problem might be your phone itself. Since you did a hard reset and it didn't fix it, you should call sprint for a replacement.

RMA = Return Material Authorization (i.e. return it for a replacement). But like I said, perhaps it's a tower problem. You will know for sure if you try another 6700 in the same geographical area.

I havent seen a future map reference "upcoming" EVDO. Where would i see this at? I know currently i'm not in EVDO area, but I dont know what is yet to come. I have not seen the map you are talkn about.

I can confirm that my phone was the problem. I had to get my phone replaced because EVDO was not allowing the calls to come through. Everything works now that I have the new phone.

I have noticed something...I live in Nashville, and while my device claims EVDO, Sprint has not officially released EVDO in my area yet. I get speeds that vary almost humorously. From almost nothing to 900k. I am almost positive that my phone is picking up the EVDO signal because they have the towers sending the signal but the actual bandwidth is not all together there. This might be why I sometimes have issues recieving phone calls when using data. I have gotten them before, but other times it just suddenly lets me know I have voicemail. Might want to double check to make sure EVDO is 'officially' released in your area, as if it is still being added, this could be a reason.

I have the Alltel flavor of this phone, and about 50% of my calls go straight to VM when I am 1x, the other 50% I get. No rhyme or reason.
