Error: "USB device has malfunctioned and is not recognizable," please help
I got my XV6700 a few weeks ago, and for the most part have been disappointed in the phone. The latest issue is related to ActiveSync. I will connect my phone via the USB cable that came with it and most of the time I get a pop up bubble that states my USB device has malfunctioned and is not recognizable. If I don't do anything and just wait eventually, It will connect and sync with my PC. Then for no reason, a little while later it will just disconnect and then If I try unplugging and plugging the USB back in, it will not do anything. Windows will not even recognize that I have a USB device. This is very frustrating the unreliable. Is this related to ActiveSync? Is there a hardware problem with my phone? Is there a problem with my PC? My scanner and iPod connect without issue, so I assume it is not my PC. I have even tried differenct USB ports without success. Any help would be appreciated. I have tried numerous Google searches with out success.
Thanks in advance

This is almost assuredly a USB problem (either on the PPC or on your computer). So what you need to do is isolate the problem by doing some tests.
The obvious is to eliminate any problems with the point-to-point connection itself. Make certain you are not using any USB hubs, and try another USB cable if you have one. Go direct from USB port on the computer to USB port on the device. Still problems? If so, then you know for sure it's either the device or your computer.
Next, try another computer. If you don't have more than one, see if you can't use your PC at work or one belonging to a friend or family member (it will not be permanent... you just want to test to see if it works or not). If you experience the same issues on a different PC then you'll know it's the device that has a problem and you should RMA it with Verizon. If it works fine then you know your PC is the culprit.
If it's the PC that is having the problem (the most likely scenario) then you'll have some more troubleshooting to do. What OS is the PC running? Was it an OEM system or one you built yourself? What chipset is the motherboard using? Are the USB ports v1.1 or 2.0 (if you don't know the answer to that, usually it can be found out by identifying the make and model of the computer/motherboard)? Even though you've tried different ports, they are all connected inside the computer so that could still be the problem. You can buy a USB expansion card very cheaply (sometimes less than $20 online) that you add to your computer to give you more USB ports. This ends up being the answer for some people (look for cards using the NEC chipset).
Although quite often, software (the OS) can be the culprit as well. Check your computer/motherboard maker's web site for updated drivers and see if those make a difference. If you've got the time and skills, consider formatting and reinstalling Windows (it's a drastic step but oftentimes the time it takes is less than if you had to troubleshoot all possible variables since formatting gives you a clean slate).
Hope that will help you narrow it down. Let us know how it goes.
I get the same thing sometimes, so I thought it might have something to do with my post http://www.pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65871 as well. So I installed AS4.0 stright off of the cd on one of my boys computers and it sync'd up perfectly!
SO, this is definitely not a phone issue *phew* Now I gotta figure out exactly what IS causing it. I may try luv2chill's suggestion about reinstalling XP, but that's a LOT of stuff to reinstall if I have to go that way. At least I know I dont' have to go back to verizon with a tell-tale story about my usb problems.
I'll keep you posted on what happens from here. Thanks for the help.
Most USB problems are by users using multi-port usb hubs, the cheap 7 and one, and 8 and one multi-card adapters, especially avoid any adapters that use computers usb supply with no supply of their ow.

Nope, nothing like that here. MB has 4 2.0 ports, and I've plugged straight into them multiple times. What makes mine interesting is that the device has NEVER sync'd at all (until my kids computer). Not like most, where their sync has stopped working for whateve reason. Odd...
Another interesting this is after ActiveSync mysteriously disconnects my CPU usage shoots to 100% and will only come down to normal levels after I disconnect it from the PPC. I have tried different USB ports on my laptop's docking station and on the laptop itself with the same results. A buble about how it the device has malfunctioned and then minutes later it mysteriously connects and then maybe 30 minutes after that it disconnects.
I have noticed if I don't turn on the XV6700 until after it is plugged in there is more of a chance it will connect right away.
After dealing with verizon and their terrible attempt at push mail through wireless sync (it ruined years of task data on my laptop), I may just give up and sell the phone. This thing has been more problems than it is worth. Thanks for everyone's help.
I have this same problem all the time - used to drive me nuts. What I've found is that if I turn the phone off (off as it gets at least), then plug the cable in while off, then turn on the phone it seems to work. I've never had it give me the "malfuntioned USB device..." message with this method, while plugging it in while on I get the malfunction message 2 of 3 times. Must be a bug in the software on the phone that messes with the voltage on the USB connector or something, causing Windows to misread the device.

Hope this works for your phone too.
Worked for me! Ive had nothing but problems with getting my phone to be discovered by the pc since the day i got it. I had to use bt all the time until now. I followed the above steps and now its connecting without a problem. Unreal.
I have this problem- also and on different computers and with two different 6700's so most assuredly it is an actisync problem. If you need reliable syncing, get a Palm. Microsoft just doesn't get it.
