How to convert dvd to ppc for free??

I know this has been discussed in length before. I know about pocket dvd studio and the likes. BUt, what is the easiest, and possible free, way to put movies onto the 6700. How do I take a dvd and make it a AVI or WMV? I tried the 3GP Converter from videohelp.com but I seem to be missing a step. I have downloaded videos from people which were already AVI or WMA files but cant figure out how to make them myself. Also, is it possible to take a AVI/WMA file that I have downloaded and make it smaller? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

From a rookie

Try DVD Catalyst. It is less than $20 and seems to work great.

This isn't exactly what you are asking about, but it's likely to be a resultant question.

Once you have extracted your DVD contents and made your MPG backup, you will need to size it for playback on your 6700. I use a program called PocketDivXRecorder.exe (it's all one file, just search Google for it). The program is free and does an exceptional job of compressing video for these devices. It's also automated, so most of the thought part of the process has been removed. You'll knock your videos down to between 256MB and 128MB... smaller if you really need to.

Hope it helps.

I use DVD Decrypter to rip dvds, then use AutoGK to convert (both freeware). Quality of videos is quite good and using AutoGK you can preset the size of file you want. For example you can encode a DVD movie into a 500MB file while maintaining good quality. You can use AutoGK to convert avi files to 240x320 as well. To play xvid/divx files you need TCMP, another freeware.

you can find a good tutorial here:

A free easy way is, windows media encoder.
The dvd has to be ripped to your hd first.
Converts the .vob's to .wmv's.
I like it because it doesn't letterbox the 320x240 video, it's fullscreen.
It takes hours to do, but it's worth it.
I just did 40 yr old virgin, 322mb, looks very good
