Just got XV6700 - Many questions: IMAP, Sounds, Notifications, Hanging Up, Antenna
Ok, so last weekend I got myself an XV6700 ... and I love it. However, I'm having a number of 'configuration issues' with it. Warning ahead of time, I've used PalmOS, a Sidekick, and Blackberries in the past. This is my first PocketPC-based device, and therefore, some of these may be generic questions.
Really hoping you all can help me out:
IMAP Email
- How do I get IMAP to delete emails from the server? When I delete them locally, they are only deleted locally. Even after doing a Send/Receive in an attempt to 'commit' them.
- Personalities - Any way to do them? That is to say, to use one email account to send email, but with different Names/Email-Addresses as the 'From'? It's an extremely common thing to do.
- IMAP Sub Folder - There doesn't appear to be a way to specify a generic subfolder to IMAP. Again, common configuration item that is often used. One of my services needs it, without it, I'm seeing the entire contents of my unix account as IMAP mailboxes
Sounds
- Is it possible to turn off the 'clicking' sound, and/or set it at a different volume level than sounds within games/apps/notifications/etc? I can only find 2 volume controls, one for 'speaker' (no matter what the use), and one for 'Phone volume'. This is really annoying, as to have notifications nice and loud, I have to have CLICK CLICK CLICK everytime I touch the phone. I currently have screen taps and hardware button taps turned off. However, clicks still happen.
- Similarly, just general volume controls for each individual event - Don't they exist, ala Palm/Blackberry?
Notifications
- Ok, this seems annoying. If my phone is asleep/turned off, and a notification happens. I pull the phone out, and it is still off. I turn it on, and the notification is not on the screen, (or was there and quickly disappears), I have to push the left soft button to see the notification. No way to cause it to just turn on and stay on? Again, Ala Palm?
Hanging up Internet
- Do I need to? I noticed that if I connect (lauch IE, or send/receive some email), it dials up. It then stays dialed up, for, well, a LONG time, even after I stop using it. Is there a need for me to hang this up? Any reason to? And for that matter, any WAY to? The only way I found to do so when playing around, was turning the phone support off then back on.
Antenna/Reception
- Anyone else not 100% satisfied here? My wife's phone (Morotola E815) gets much better reception in my basement than mine. I'm still connected, but at 0 or 1 little bar. She has 2-3, and gets very clear calls. Mine are possible, but not 100% so.
- External antenna - Given above, I was interested in perhaps hooking up an external antenna for when I'm sitting in my computer room (running it up out a window and onto the house). However, two things worry me. One is: What type of connector does this phone need? When I went looking, seems there are many variations on a theme here. And (2) Is it just me, or does it look like you wouldn't want to leave the little rubber antenna plug cover off on a regular basis. Which means it would be annoying to constantly take it out/put in, as I go to my computer room, or head back out.
- Alternative: Booster - Alternatively, anyone know of any good passive or active booster technologies? Essentially an antenna I could stick on the roof, and have something in my computer room that would boost/repeat the signal there?
Ok, just realized I kinda got off topic about the XV6700 in general ... I'll shut up now. Thanks in advance!
As for your e-mail questions, you may want to check out Webis Mail, which is a 3rd party mail app that is more full-featured. Download the trial and see if it meets your needs.
If your phone is asleep and a notification occurs, it should wake it up. Like I'm sitting here looking at my 6700 in the cradle. If I were to receive an alarm or new voicemail, the phone would wake up and the screen would turn on to show it to me. Does yours not work that way? I don't see any way around pressing the softkey for the notification though, once the bubble has timed out off the screen.
You do not need to disconnect your internet connection (on the contrary, many users here are more concerned with trying to leave it connected 24-7). While it is not being actively used (i.e. data transferring) it goes dormant. So it doesn't hurt to leave it connected. You will still be able to place and receive calls normally.
Never compare "bars" between two different model phones. There is no standard of how many dB of signal a bar is, so every device manufacturer calculates it differently. The 6700 actually has quite good signal strength. Now if your phone is dropping out, calls fading, etc. then you have poor signal, but your wife's three bars may in fact be just about the same as your one bar. Sorry I can't help you on external antennas or repeaters... never used 'em. You may be able to pull up info in a search though.

Was hoping; having paid $300 for this guy, to not need to spend more money on 3rd party software ... I don't pay for email software on my PC (Thunderbird), didn't wanna pay on here, plus I can always use internet mail if it came to that.
ah well, I'll keep playing some with some settings.

Well, It may be just that I'm not quick enough ... I'll make an alarm just for the kicks of it and see what happens. But the times that alarms have gone off in the past for me, by the time I pull it out of my pocket, the screen is off.
Is there any way of increasing the notificatino timeout? I really liked on Palm & Blackberry how the notifications stays up UNTIL you clear it. It never just times out. That seems counter-intuitive to me.
Ok, just figured out a few things. For one, the 'notification' issue. It does wake my phone up. However, I think the problem is the 30 second backlight timeout. When this thing's backlight goes off, it feels like it has turned off, ie, you have to look HARD to see anything on the screen.
So I think I was not getting to it until after the 30 seconds, it looked turned off, so I was hitting the power button, nothing happened, hit ti again, and now the notification was gone.
If I just toggle the stick (don't go there), it comes back fine.
Also, on the 'clicks'. I got rid of them via turning off the 'system notifications' Would be nice if you could still have sounds for 'alerts' and 'errors', but not clicks when you hit the windows button. Ah well.
For removing email from the server, the phone won't send the delete command until you empty your deleted items folder. The next time it connects to the server after that it will delete the mail from the server.
You can set when it emptys deleted items from menu | tools | Options, then select the storage tab. (all within Pocket Outlook)
You can change your backlight timeout (Start->Settings->System tab->Backlight). As you know it will impact battery life a bit, but maybe even setting it to a minute would give you enough time to acknowledge the notification.
For the IMAP question, go to Tools -> Manage Folders. Then tap and hold each folder and you can set the properties as to whether it syncs with the server and how.

I have figured out how to raise the volume of the "ring tone" However, even with raising the volume and "high-speed" passing of the WavePad program my notification tones are still low. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem?
