How much space is required on the storage card for most of GPS software out there??

I tried to search but it appears the search function isn't quite operational yet.

How much space is required on the storage card for most of the GPS software out there? Is it easy to load just the states/ metro areas you need at a given time? I haven't used GPS before so I'm ignorant of what needs to be done, etc. I understand the bluetooth pairing/ receiver stuff but would also like to know Pros/ Cons of some of the packages people are currently using.

Thanks.

Depends on what software you are using, depends on how many states you plan on carrying around with you, short answer depends...

As well what you are basically dealing with is that the gps software itself probably needs to be installed to the phone itself and the maps go on the card.

I use oncourse... takes about 8mb (I think) on the phone and 1 gb on my storage card that covers the entire U.S.

Yeah on average i would estimate 10-20 MB per Metropolitan City Area
You will need to "plan" your trip if you are going out of town, that way the software will put all associated maps on your memory (this does not add too much to the MB total)

TomTom 5 - MS_AL_FL_GA_SC_KY_VA_TN_NC map takes up about 200MB on my SD card. Ovciously, single state maps require much less space.
