I keep reading that people get getting insane bills from Verizon due to going past their data usage. I think I want to do the $50.00 data plan. Will that protect me from an excessive data charges?
I was curious about the speed, is it faster than a 56k modem? What is it eqivilent to?
Thanks,
Rich
I have a Tmobile Sidekick & I am wondering if the web browsing would be better/faster.
The unlimited data plan varies in price depending on your voice plan selection....just unlimited data is 49.99, unlimited data with qualifying voice plan is 44.99, unlimited data in a "bundle" plan with voice varies depending on voice minutes selection. Any of the unlimited data plans protect you from extra charges. They do not include txt, pix, or flix.
It is significantly faster than a 56K modem. Speeds vary between 400 kbit/sec - 700'ish kbit/sec in a EVDO coverage area, and then with 1X its appoximately 80 - 150. Obviously YMMV.
Unlimited PDA/Smartphone and BlackBerry® Plans:
Data sessions may be used for following purposes: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) email; and (iii) intranet access (including access to corporate intranets, email and individual productivity applications like customer relationship management, sales force and field service automation. Intranet access requires the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.). Unlimited plans are for individual use only and not for resale. The Unlimited plans cannot be used: (1) for any applications that tether the device to laptops, PCs, or other equipment for any purpose, (2) for uploading, downloading or streaming of movies, music or games, (3) with server devices or with host computer applications other than the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, including, without limitation, Web camera posts or broadcasts, continuous jpeg file transfers, automatic data feeds, telemetry applications, automated functions or any other machine-to-machine applications, (4) as substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections.
Data sessions automatically terminate after two hours of inactivity unless used with a Mobile IP-capable device. We reserve the right to deny or terminate service, without notice, to anyone who uses the Unlimited plan in any manner prohibited above or whose usage adversely impacts our network or service levels. We also reserve the right to terminate service upon expiration of Customer Agreement term.
Does Verizon Wireless strictly enforce these terms? They seem like pretty absurd terms and conditions to me. What is the point of having broadband service if you can't use it for video and music and are specifically restricted to only use it for web browsing and email?
Verizon is on crack if they think people are going to be using EVDO and these new powerful PDA's for only web browsing and email. $50 a month for email and web browsing?
I have had inquiries from friends that are Verizon users. Am I reading your responses correctly. For unlimited EVDO, Verizon charges $44.99 if you have a voice plan, & Sprint charges $15.00 if you have a voice plan?
$15 or $25.....You are supposed to have the $25 plan if you use the phone as a modem (its actually pretty explicitly stated now when you try to order the phone via the website) but you aparently can get away with the $15 plan
Verizon:
As low as $20 and as high as $49 depending on what voice plan you pick out.
$20 being the 4000 min voice/data bundle and the $49 being DATA ONLY.
I'm currently on 1350 bundle which makes the DATA $30 a month.

If you use data quite a bit the phone as a modem plan will cost you quite a bit more than $25.00 at least on the PPC6700 even handset data usage counts against the 40mb included data, if you go over that it is .001 per kb with a max additional charge of $70. So if you us 110mb per month or more (fairly easy) you will be paying $95 per month for this data plan.
That of course is only if you ever use the phone as a modem. Just comparing phone-only data, Sprint is 1/3 the price of Verizon comparing apples to apples in most scenarios. Granted, the 1350/unl. data for $109 is a really good deal and Verizon's coverage in my area is quite a bit better than Sprint's. Not to mention Verizon's EVDO covers more of my area than Sprint's does so I went with VZW. I do wish Verizon would drop their data prices and make the bundles available in a family plan as well. However, Verizon has no good reason to do this as they're adding more customers than any other carrier.
As far as speed goes, I generally see 350-700 in most tests though on occasion my speed tests will clock in at 180-200 when the network is clogged up.

One correction to your otherwise great post, its a max of $70 total, not $70 addition on top of the $25. Still too much, but not as bad.

hmmm, are you subscribed to this plan? I had originally the same understanding as you, but when I first got my phone I signed up for this plan and they give you the first month with unlimited data, well they charged me an excess data charge of $70 and then credited my account for $70. That, as well as a post from another forum indicating he had over a $60 excess data charges on this plan made me think that the cap was $25 plus $70. Since I found that I could pretty much do everything without having to teather I switched to the $15 a month plan.
I have a PPC-6700 on Sprint. I am on the $15 vision plan. If you check other forums you will see that this seems to be the prefered plan for the 6700. My understanding is that so far there have been no verified reports of any PPC-6700 user on the $15 plan being charged or terminated for excessive data usage. Anyone here who knows of such a situation should share the details if possible.
For the 6700 Sprint supplies the tethering software, the cable and even customer support if you can't get it to work. The supplied dialer hobbles the connection a bit by limiting the connection between the PC and phone to 256k. This limitaion apperantly is easily remedied by setting up your own dial up connection using the connection wizard in Windows XP.
I've been streaming a lot of high quality video and music from my home computer to the PPC-6700 using ORB at data rates up to 500 kbps. ORB is currently free software that is sponsored by Sprint and some other other wireless providers. One of the Reps at the Sprint Store told me about it.

SO you only use data on the phone? You never use the phone as a modem via USB or bluetooth? (both are tethering)
The 6700 is so powerful there is not much I cannot do without teathering. I can get all of my email. Even if there is an attatchment I can download it via the 6700 and then transfer it via active sync to my laptop. If I am out of town I can usually find a hotel with wifi for the laptop to use and I have hispeed cable internet at home. I can do fine with only using the 6700 while in the car.
I can tell you that since I switched to the $15 plan, I teathered once to get access to a web page that was giving me problems on the 6700, ( a credit card statement.) If I used even 1 mb, I would be suprised. I will gladly pay for it if the are able to track it.
I would have no problem with the Phone as a modem plan if they did not charge me for handset usage. But for them to expect me to pay an extra $55-$80 (depending on which cap is accurate) per month to occasionaly teather is ludicrous.
