I know there has been a lot of "Chatter", ahem, about the Chattermail application on the Treo and how it provides email push functionality from IMAP accounts that support the IDLE protocol, which most of them do.
Well, there is an application that does the same thing for the WM5 devices. Still in it's infancy, and you have to do some work to get it going, but it's pretty sweet.
Then go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/view...mail&start=175 for a discussion of how to, pretty simply, get this to work on WM5. The developer is actively working on this and it's nice. Totally integrated into the built in Messaging app.
I tried it out and was able to see my email account on the device change realtime as I made changes from my web based email on my laptop.
Pretty cool stuff. If you are looking for realtime email and have an IMAP account this may be for you.

the only problem i see with this is that you will need your data connection to always be on from what I can tell. A socket is created and is kept open...which is how it knows when you have new mail, because it is actually always connected!
though maybe I am misunderstanding this...I didnt look at it very long since I am in a 1x/EV-DO fringe area, and cant have my data connection always be open as I would miss phone calls.
I believe the way the exhange server works is that it actually sends a text message which the phone intercepts so you never see it, at which point the phone now knows you have a new email waiting on the server and it can connect to get.
I'm missing something here . if it keeps an open channel then does it sync through that open chanel and therefore knows when I have a new email or does it still send an sms that the ppc6700 understands and only then syncs?
also can you send email out from the device using this vgsmail program , or is only for receiving emails? and if it sends is it sent out on the spot or it wieghts for the next sync to happen?
thanks for your help
also does the authority support the program and help you out or reply to email questions?

in 1x mode you will be able to get calls when idle but if the connection is actively getting mail then it will go to voicemail.. so if you get a lot of mail then this might be an issue but its pretty much give and take..
this phone supports the ability to be online using 1x/evdo without usting the voice features so you will not miss any calls. to make sure it wirks make a call and close the phone view by clicking the X in the top right corner, the call should stay connected, then select IE and viola, your on the web and the phone at the same time.
I tested this all day today. It's going to be great once it's designed for WM5, but it's much too buggy for me to use in its current form.
Every time I lost my network connection (elevator, phone call, etc) the transport couldn't reconnect on its own. I'll definitely be watching this as it develops though. Thanks for the heads up!

thanks fr that, what type of free imap accounts are out there and can gmail forward to the free imap account to get around that? or if not what advise do you have
thanks again
Yeah, I had some issues too reconnecting, but it is really close. I think the developer is staying on top of it as he is getting a WM5 phone soon too. Maybe a few more builds and we will be there.
As far as IMAP acoounts, I use www.fastmail.fm (paid version) and have been really happy with it.

AIM is a free IMAP service with 2GB of storage. If you have an AIM account, you probably already have an AIM email.

Originally posted by chadam hi how would you set this up and use it with a gmail account? or can't you, is gmail imap?
as uprey stated aim is the best way to go as far as storage and the ability to use the smtp.. Since you are using gmail just forward your gmail to your aim account and setup the mail client to use gmail's smtp so that way everything is sent from gmail with no traces of aim..

It seems like others have gotton this to work but I am having no luck. I installed the transport and set it up. I than installed the client and when I ran the setup program I get a white screen and nothing else..
Let me start by saying that I am not usually a proponent of software per se as I think everyone should pick what suits their particular needs best. In breaking with my own beliefs I have decided to tell you all that this application "vgsmail" is one of the most used and best supported I have on my 6700. This fills the need for REALTIME PUSH email on our devices without waiting for the elusive ROM upgrade (not holding my breath). The only shortcoming that I know of currently is that attachments are not supported (but are definitely coming soon). I have had zero crashes or other conflicts since installing this program and the xda website is promptly responded to and updated with new release information daily if not more. Frankly I cannot wait to kiss AS goodbye and have the only thing missing from my conversion to PPC from Palm fixed (Chatteremail). Try it....
