help!! Garmin install doesn't recognize my 6700 is connected!!

I've been pulling my hair out over this for a couple days now and can't figure it out.

I've got a Garmin GPS 10 receiver and trying to utilize it with my 6700 (Sprint). I know there are issues with the bluetooth recognition but my problem starts even before that.

Using the standard installation CD I have installed mapsource and cityselect on my pc. I then install GarminQue 2.6 on my 6700. Unfortunately when I go to install the basemap I get an error stating

Error finding device, or maps on the device

Please make sure that :
-You have the cf Que software installed to your device. (Step #1 on the cF Que Setup CD)
-Your PDA in its cradle.
-Your PDA is turned 'on'
-You have ActiveSync software running on your PC

Now I have just performed a fresh install of GarminQue and the install program recognized the 6700 so all of the requirements have been met. For some reason the install program just does not recognize that the 6700 is connected. When I us Mapsource and try to transfer detailed maps or waypoints to the 6700 it also states the same thing that the device cannot be found.

Before installing I removed the junkware from the 6700 and installed these programs
CAB:\Extended_ROM\Cert_SPCS.sa.CAB
CAB:\Extended_ROM\Cert_SPCS.CAB
CAB:\Extended_ROM\IOTA.sa.CAB
CAB:\Extended_ROM\Customize_SPCS.sa.CAB
CAB:\Extended_ROM\ButtonLock.sa.CAB
CAB:\Extended_ROM\Enable_rintTone.sa.CAB
CAB:\Extended_ROM\Version.sa.CAB

Am I missing something that needs to be installed so that the 6700 will be recognized? If I could find out why it is not being recognized I could avoid performing a hard reset and installing everything again.

I hope I was clear about my question.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried their website to see if there are any updates to the software?

yeah. i am using the most up to date software so i don't know what else to try

i've already talked to tech support and the person i spoke with didn't seem to provide much help.

i will have to try someone else i guess.

it is just weird that it recognizes the ppc when it installs the main program, just not when i try to install the basemap or add detailed maps. this is why it is so confusing to me.

I don't know how the software works but have you checked the Garmin folder in program files on your PC to see if there are cab files for the maps? Maybe you can copy those to your PPC and install it from there..

Good luck. I never got it to work. I ended up buying iGuidance, which I prefer anyways. Unfortunately, with the GPS10, I have to delete and re-setup my bluetooth pairing every time I use it. You referenced the gps10 pairing issues above. Have you resolved this, or seen this resolved by others?

I'm so glad I found someone that is having the same problem I am. I just got the XV6700. I had the GPS10 on my XV6600 and it worked fine. Like you Mapsource cannot see the 6700 despite the Garmin exe being installed and despite pairing the Que software couldn't find the GPS. In calling Garmin I was sent a new exe to be placed on the phone. The version of this exe is 2.80 and has not been posted on the Garmin site yet. With the new exe there is no problem with Que seeing the GPS10 but there is no solution for transferring the maps to the phone. Luckily I had copies of the base map and a detailed map file from the XV6600. I moved them to the phone so now can use the software as intended. All I was told was Garmin was working on the issue of the map transfer and when it was fixed an update would be released. Hopefully this will be soon.

Garmin GPS 10 on the XV6700 - Got it to work!

Garmin GPS 10 on the XV6700.

First the update. I am adding it to this message. There is an EXE and 3 DLL's which need to be coppied to the following locations:

Ok, I was going to add it. It is 1.2MB in size. Only have 1.0MB limit on zip files. Any suggestions are welcome.

Install the maps directly to the memory card via a card reader, or use a key FOB. The installation program sees nearly all external devices as valid places to put the map. In my case, I did not have an SDIO reader, but I had a 256MB memory key. I installed the maps to the key, then coppied the gmapsupp.img file from the key to the PDA (\Storage Card\Garmin).

Soft reset the device. Make sure the device is paired up to the GPS10 prior to starting Que. Start Que. You may have to "find" a location on the map you are loading to see the map if your GPS is indoors with no SAT link.

Hope this works. Took me 3 hours with Garmin support to figure all this out.

I am unable to get my XV6700 and GPS 10 to partner even after repeated calls to Garmin. All they send is one zip file that contains GarminQue.exe that I was told to put in the Garmin folder on my PDA. This file is 2.99MB and dated 1.05.2006.
Did you have any problems getting XV6700 and GPS 10 to partner? Also what were the names, sizes and file dates? Also where does each file go.
Thanks for your time to answer this.

GarminQue, GPS 10, XV6700

GarminQue.exe 3065kb 01/05/06
CFGPSDrvier.dll 75kb 12/16/05
QueOutlook.dll 23kb 12/16/05
QueRAPI.dll 32kb 12/16/05

Unzip the file and make sure your unit 6700 is connected to your PC via
ActiveSync and that the Que application is not running.

Within ActiveSync, press EXPLORE. Then double-click your Windows Mobile
based device item in the upper left to view the available folders. Then
drag the files from the Zip window into the appropriate folders as noted
below.

The GarminQue application goes into the Garmin folder on the PDA.

The .dll files all go into the Windows folder on the PDA.

Note: The tech told me that if Que had ever been installed onto the memory card, it would hose up the registry. Would have to clear and hard-boot the PDA to fix it (re-installaing everything). Que MUST be installed to the PDA, not the Card. AGAIN, this is according to the Tech. I already had Que installed on the PDA, so it was not an issue for me. Don't know id the Card install will work or not.

Thanks!

Not sure if this will help but I also use the GPS10 and have no issues; including loading maps.

I used the same files that are outlined by tn-snoopy. The one thing I didn't see mentioned was how the maps are installed. Here's what I was told to do by Garmin tech support and it works for me.

1. Install GarminQue from your original CD. When you get to the part about installing the base map, cancel. It will fail if you try and continue at this point.

2. Replace the .exe and .dll files as described by tn-snoopy.

3. Relaunch the GarminQue CD and select install base map but you must have GarminQue running on the 6700. This allowed me to install the base map with no problems. You will get the option of installing to either main memory or the storage card. I install my maps to the storage card with no problem. I do run the main app from the main memory though.

The key is to make sure that Garmin is running on the PPC before you try and upload the map(s). Without that step, neither the Garmin install CD or Mapsource will recognize the 6700.

Hope that helps.

I am running Que on my 6700 without problems, but you need to add GPS Proxy (which really makes Que work exceptionally well)

You also need to get a beta version of Que which is compatable with WM5. It has never been publicly released, but if you PM me and give an E-mail, I will send it to you.

Also, I have never been able to get Mapsource to recognise the 6700. I add maps to the SD card thru a card reader which Mapsource does recognise.

Garmin GPS 10 configuration

"Attached are the instructions for
loading the GPS 10/WM5 patch onto your PDA:

The first file that needs to be unzipped is the GPS10_PPC_280.zip. When the
file is unzipped there are 3 files:
The GarminQue executable file needs to go into the Garmin folder on the PDA.

The three .dll files need to go into the Windows folder on the PDA.
Once these have been moved over, the next file that needs to be unzipped is
the GarminQue.zip. Once this is unzipped, this needs to be moved to the
Garmin folder on the PDA." - Quoted from Garmin Technical Support

You will need to go into your bluetooth setup and create a new outgoing port. You will need to select an unused port on your 6700. When prompted for the device, select Garmin GPS 10. You will be prompted for a port to use, with a fairly default setup on the XV6700 COM8 is available. If you select secure connection required, you will be forced to input the passkey everytime you reconnect with the receiver; I opted for unsecure just for the ease of it.

After you have your outgoing port set up, you will need to start Que and it should auto find the unit. If not, go to |Menu |System Setup and then go to the last tab |Interface and select the new port you just created (COM8 in this example).

We just got this figured out today. Garmin sent me the files but didn't know about the port creation. The updated files should be available for download in the next few weeks from the website.

http://www.gsauto.net/GPS10_PPC_280.zip
http://www.gsauto.net/GarminQue.zip

I have an idea that you can bypass copying the first GarminQue file included in the GPS10_PPC_280.zip file and just use the second one. It makes no sense to me since you are overwriting it and never even run it.

Let me know if there are any problems.

Mapsource & Mapinstall (Garmin Que)

Just a side note. After getting everything to work, and copying a set of maps using the memory key method, all the sudden, Mapsource and MapInstall both recognize my 6700. Don't know why, but it shows up in the device list just like it should, copies maps, everything.

I did the following:
Install Que via CD to local PPC (not mem card)
Install Voice from CD to memory card in PDA
Copy new GarminQue to Garmin folder on PDA
Copy new .dll's to Windows folder on PDA
Soft reset
Install Tennessee maps to memory key
Copy gmapsupp.img from memory key to PDA storage card into Garmin directory
Soft reset
Linked Que to GPS10 to test positioning and maping
Opened MapQuest to find something, and noticed that it showed my device.
Installed base map from CD onto memory card in PDA
Installed new maps via MapInstall onto memory card in PDA

I don't know which of these steps were important and which were not, so I just included them all.

Thanks,
--Glenn.

I had the same idea and there doesn't seem to be any problems if you just go straight to the second executable. That's what I've done the last couple of times I've had to hard reset from playing with other stuff

Sort of odd though as it seems some people have trouble with the maps and getting the 6700 recognized by MapSource and others don't. Oh well, I guess as long as eveyone can make it work with whatever method they choose, no harm no foul.

I'm a long time Garmin fan and being able to use my GPS10 was the last deciding factor regarding moving from my 6601 to a 6700.

Power down procedure

Just thought I'd share my experience. 1 day after I got it all working, the receiver crapped out. It had no lights and wouldn't power up. The unit would get warm from the charger so it was getting power. I called up the same tech and told him what was going on. Apparently this is a known problem that can happen from a static surge when unplugging the unit. To avoid the possibility you are suppossed to unplug the unit from the charger before unplugging the charger from the power source. He also said to be on the safe side, always power the unit off before unplugging it. I'm lucky enough to live 10 miles from Garmin HQ in Olathe so I had my new unit 2 days later, but am disappointed that they haven't published anything regarding a known problem like this. They had a similar problem with the iQue 3600 when you would eject the SD card (actually pushed release back a few months because of it).
Anyway hope this helps prevent any problems for someone else.

I'm still looking for help here on this GPS 10. My issue is NOT the Que software. I much prefer iGuidance. What I can't get (and I think I see others in this thread with the same problem) is my 6700 to properly MAINTAIN the pairing with the GPS 10. All my other Bluetooth devices create a pairing and, the next time I turn on the device in-range, the device just works. With the GPS 10, I need to re-create the pairing each time I use it. In the Bluetooth Manager on the 6700 the GPS 10 shows up, but it shows as a "?" icon to the left of the device name. All other devices properly show the device type in the icon.

The secure connection thing is not the issue. I have tried turning it on and off.

Any help would be great. This takes me 5 minutes each time I use my GPS to get it going. I'm assuming getting this fixed is going to involve a firmware update on the GPS10 or buying a new non-GPS10 device. Again, I can get the device to work, but I have to set it up on my 6700 every time I use it.

Thanks,
S.

I ended up buying another GPS. Nothing worked to maintain the pairing. I'm assuming this is a problem with some GPS10 units as I have found a bunch of other people with the same problem while others, on the same device, don't have it.

As a parting shot to Garmin, who was no help whatsoever, for those of you who find this thread while thinking about buying the GPS10, consider spending one fifth the money for this unit:

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=ABG-108&cat=GPS

Pairs easily with my 6700 and is at least as accurate. It isn't water resistant, but that is the only downside so far. You will also have to spend $100 on iGuidance - but it is well worth the coin and gets better support than Garmin provides.

I have no problems with the Garmin GPS 10

For those of you who want to know how to get the GPS 10 to work with the 6700 here goes. First go to the Garmin site and download the 2.09 version of the software. Install it to the phone through ActiveSync. Next pair the phone with the unit. The passkey is 1234. Have the Serial Port option selected in the partnership settings. Next you have to set up a com port as an outgoing port. You can select any port that is available. Just keep trying until you find one that you can use. I have mine set up on COM8. Finally to allow the GPS 10 to connect every time you run the software on the phone make sure under the security tab in the bluetooth settings that the Authentication (Passkey) Required option is NOT checked. This is how I have mine set up and I don't have an issue with the connection needing to be reestablished with the Passkey each time I use it. I have found one thing since the upgrade that is strange when I connect to the GPS 10 though. When the bluetooth connection is established between the phone and the GPS, ActiveSync will start without being docked to a PC, and no one seems to be able to understand why. I hope this helps all who needs it.
