I just recently got a webcam along with my new 6700 and was wondering if anyone has had success streaming their webcam to the 6700. I've tried a couple of solutions but have run into PIE issues with Java. I'm now trying Windows Media Encoder in an effort to stream to MP10. So far I just keep getting errors that I can't access the site, etc.
Basically, I'm trying to stream from my laptop to the 6700 through my cable provider. I have set-up port forwarding in my router to work. I also have a desktop running a small ftp server so I am pretty certain all of my settings are correct.
Since this isn't a critical application -- more a proof of concept to play with the technology -- it isn't life and death. However, it would be pretty cool to check in on my dogs throughout the day, etc.
If anyone has gotten this to work please help. Thanks.
Yes easy to do with WME. Just setup the encode, you want to setup a "pull" off any port, the default is 8080 i think, then simply port forward requests to 8080 on the lappy. Then open WMP on the PPC and type in mms://youripaddress:8080
If you dont want to have to rem. your ip address, or if it changes a lot, use thedyndns.com client on your laptop.

If you need more details let me know.
Still can't get it to work. I also just realized that it is not showing a URL (meaning my IP from provider). It just shows my LAN address. How do I get WME to recognize the IP from my provider?
When are u trying to play it, are you using your external IP address? WME doesnt need to know your external IP address, it just uses your computer name.
As you likely know you can go to whatismyip.com to verify your external IP.
Also, be sure the windows firewall on your lappy isn't stopping you (turn it off for a min, or add port 8080 to exceptions).

I'm trying to play the webcam using Media Player on the 6700. I'm using encoder to set the stream and trying to access the Internet IP from my broadband provider. I've been able to do this with my FTP server. My setup, like most with a home LAN (mine is wireless using Linksys Router), is using 192.168.1.xxx for the LAN IPs. The Gateway (Internet IP) is 68.xxx.xxx.xxx. I can FTP using FTP://68.xxx.xxx.xxx with port forwarding to my local 192.xxx.xxx.xxx IP. However, I can't seem to get WMP to open url of http://68.xxx.xxx.xxx:80 or mms://68.xxx.xxx.xxx:80.
When setting up WME it shows the local URL but doesn't display an Internet URL -- wondering how to make it find my gateway.
Also, am trying to set up Orb as that looks like another alternative and I like the access to all of my photos, music, and webcam. However, so far I'm only able to view my photos using Orb. Everytime I try to play music or view webcam it errors out. I've tried accessing Orb on my PC through the 6700 and can see it start up the webcam and then the PC locks momentarily. Same thing happens when I try to stream music.
I'll admit I haven't searched this forum yet on the Orb stuff so that is this evening's project. However, the Orb forum hasn't provided a whole lot of help yet either.
Port 80 might already be in use by your router or something else. I suggest:
Use port 8080.
Disable Windows Firewall to test.
Port forward port 8080 to your local IP.
Go to whatismyip.com to verify WAN IP.
WME doesnt need to know your IP for any reason. All it does after you click start, is encode to port 8080 on your laptop.
PS gateway is not the right term for your WAN IP, gateway is upstream from your modem (for most home setups).

Been trying it with port 8080. All router settings are good. WAN IP is set.
Ok, so WME doesn't need to know my IP. However, if I'm trying to access the stream outside of my LAN I need to use the 68.xxx.xxx.xxx:8080/ address. I've tried it with both mms:// and http:// through "open URL" in WMP -- no dice.
Any ideas or am I completely missing something here? Also, trying to run this on XP Home rather than Pro if that makes any difference. Also using Zone Alarm and have the 8080 ports authorized. I've tried it with and without Zone Alarm running.
Thanks for all your help -- I'm running out of ideas here and Orb is letting me stream audio or webcam either -- I'm sure its the same issue but damn this shouldn't be that difficult.
No it shouldnt. Do you have another PC to try it within your LAN? Just open mms://192.168.1.xxx:8080
That way we can tell if it's a router issue or an encoder thing. You can actually try playing it from the encoding laptop itself. 127.0.0.1:8080
Does zone alarm disable the built in windows firewall? I'm sure it does, but something to check.
Some of this may sound stupid, but have to be sure . Make sure the port forwarding is setup right, 8080 to 8080, and it's enabled. You have clicked start on the encoder. It's setup as a pull.
Do you have remote management enabled on the Linksys (off by default) because it uses port 8080, and would be an issue. For fun try another port, 7070 for example.
I happen to work with this everyday, so i'm sure we can get it going for you. The fact that Orb has issues makes me think its router or firewall related.
Well maybe i should have actually tried to play it straight from an encoder before I had you all those steps! Because I cant get it to work straight from the encoder on the PPC either....
I can view all my streams after they go through our media servers, but not right from the encoder. I can view the streams direct from the encoders on the PC however. Strange I cant think of any reason for it not to work.
Even found a tutorial that doesnt show any special moves:
I even made .asx files with the simple mms://xxxx:8080 in it, no dice, same .asx works fine on the PC. It must get confused by the :8080 port number, thats all I can think of.

I'll play with it tomorrow.
So, you had me running in circles for nothing? . Just kidding.
Any ideas on why I can't get my Orb to stream then? I've been playing with them both all day and don't have much hair left at this point. I would've thought Orb would've been easier to deal with but that is driving me nuts as well. I can see all of my video, audio, and photo files but can't stream the audio or my webcam -- ARGH!
Ok it just straight up doesnt work....
Even if I use my PPC on my home wifi, and then try to open my own test encode session @ 192.168.1.101:8080 it doesn't work.
It's quite strange. Perhaps another media player would work.
It's bugging me too. It should be a simple push situation that doesn't require me to pull my hair out. Unless M$ decided to only allow it to work in a LAN environment so they can cash in on more server software and conferencing sales.
I'll let you figure that one out while I stand on the ledge with Orb
