Thanks for the advise, I probably did not have active sync disabled. However, your comment does raise an additional question in my mind: are the usb drivers included with the MS activesync 4.1 download compatible with the Sprint PPC-6700 phone?
Prior to installing activesync 4.0 off of the CD that came with the phone, I actually tried installing activesync 4.1 from the MS web site. The installation completed properly. However, once I had done this, active sync 4.1 would not detect my phone at all. I then uninstalled 4.1, and used system restore to "revert" my drive for good measure.
Then I installed 4.0 from the Sprint CD and all was well.
Then, following advise from various forums, I decided to upgrade to 4.1, which let to the scenario I described in my original posting: the installation of 4.1 hung on "updating USB drivers", quite probably for the reason you gave.
Now, if I try to install 4.1 again, this time with active sync off so the USB drivers presumably get replaced, I wonder if it will work at all.
I'll give this a try, when I have enough time to redo things if I have to!
Again, thanks very much for the pointer!
