Use the file explore feature of AS, copy the .cab file to a folder of your choice on the PPC. Using your PPC navigate to the file and open the .cab it will install. You can then delete the .cab to free up space.

However, most PPC programs use a .exe installer that you can simply install from your Windows desktop/laptop over activesysnc while your PPC is connected.

If you will be using cab files to install applications, you will benefit from a utility called CabInstl. It enables you to install cab file in the location of your choice (i.e. main menory, BIS, SD card). Cab files, by default, install to main memory.

Actually you do not need CabInstl with WM5 devices as there is a new option on there that lets you choose the destination with CAB files.

With CAB files, you need to transfer it to your device, either your SD card or main memory. It does not matter where you put it. Once it's on your device, open a file explorer and browse to the file. Click on it and the installation will begin. If you have a storage card, it will prompt you to choose a destination to install. If not, it will automatically installed to main memory. Once the installation is finished, you can delete the CAB..

Is there any way to keep a copy of the CAB file from a desktop exe installation? I'd like to keep a copy of the CAB for everything I use on the SD card in case I need to reinstall. It says I'm installing a CAB's from /Windows/AppMgr/Install but the directory is always empty. It seems kind of stupid to be unable to install anything without having to hook up to your desktop.

check the program files\microsoft activesync folder on your desktop...that's where most of the cab files should be when you install apps via activesync..

noob installing programs

I haven't had a windows mobile device since windows ce 2 came out. I have a Sprint PPC-6700. I downloaded a program from microsoft that is for this windows mobile 5.0 device. It is a cab file. How can I install it? I tried copying it over to the device and then resyncing and looking at the add/remove on the activesync menu on my pc but it doesn't show any programs that I can add.

You copy it to the device and then, using file manager(on the device), click on the cab file and it will install.

I just made a folder on my storage card called Cabs and put them all in there. That way when/if I need to hard reset, I can easily reinstall any programs, without needing to hook up to my pc.
