The case looks good and attaches to my belt - it's exactly what I was looking for.
Unfortunately, there's a major problem: the PPC 6700 will turn on automatically as soon as I get it near the case.
At first I thought I was hitting the power button by mistake, but after a few tries I realized that was not the case. As I place the PPC 6700 1-2 inches from the case it automatically turns on!
One of the features of the leather case is a magnetic clip - The frap consist of a magnetic button hidden beneath the soft linen material that shuts securely once released.
Could the magnetic clip be the cause? Would it be turning the PPC 6700?
Alot of times when I remove the phone from the case the call will stop. I think it is happening as the magnet is near the screen, so it wouldn't surprise me if the magnet is causing your issues. As is documented in the "case" thread, I've been looking for a velcro or slipper alternative, hoping that it would cure this behavior.
The trigger to rotate the screen and turn it on when the keyboard is slide out is magnetic. If you are having a problem when you pull it out of the case, try turning it around so the screen faces the opposite direction and see if that helps.
Paragon, I tried the 4 possible ways (left/right, up/down) and every single time the PPC 6700 turned itself on.
I gave up on that case; I'm not going to even try to get my money back from the eBay guy. He's selling the case as if it's a PPC 6700 case, but it's obvious he never tried using the case with a PPC 6700.
A buddy of mine has one for his iPaq and I tried it with my PPC 6700. It fits perfectly and has an additonal pocket for SD cards, etc... Plus it doesn't turn the PPC 6700 on automatically!!
I'm going to try to alter my case with super glue and velcro in order to get rid of the magnets. Anyone have a better idea about how to do this in a cleaner fashion? It would be tough to try to stitch the velcro on.
ok I modified my case. used a razor and cut half circles around the magnets. pulled them out. I then used a glue gun and filled the gap in. I then glued on velcro. Seems to be working good.
That is a very odd problem indeed! Particularly considering the factory case that ships with a brand new PPC-6700 uses a magnetic clip, much like you have described the item purchased from a vendor on eBay. Just out of curiosity, is the magnet in your case excessively powerful? Kinda like the magnets in a hard drive for the head pivoting motor? (Those magnets are amazingly powerful for their size!)
All those magnetic catch cases use super powerful neodymium magnets. The ones that use the hidden catch just use a larger magnet to get through the layers of material.
The one that ships with the phone is a more effcient design and requires a less powerful magnet.
I've experimented a little and the sensitive area is just below the antenna on the right side of the phone. If the case allows it, flipping the phone over should help.

Here is my public notice - DO NOT BE FOOLED this case or any case that uses such powerful magnets WILL NOT WORK with this phone no matter how you put it in or pull it out. These magnets are at least 10x's more powerful than the sprint snap with a little magnet. This is true with both the xv6700 and the ppc-6700.
The magnets will turn the phone on from any angle at just over 1/4" away and at some angles up to 1" away.
I would be interested to see if a case that uses flat long flexible magnets may work.
Yeah, the magnet has to be towards the center of the case. Anything near the top (by the antenna) will trigger the power and/or the landscape mode switch.
