Orb... What's the catch?

Call me a skeptic, but this app sounds too good to be free.

I have TivoToGo and would like to couple this with Orb, but I have to ask... What's the catch?

Am I losing privacy? Are they logging what I watch? Just curious.

Why am I asking this here? I wanted an objective responsive from actual users away from the Orb forums.

TIA

I use orb on a daily basis and so far no catches that I can see. The only thing that you might want to be aware of is;
Like every new service that gains popularity it has the potential to be bought out by a larger company that will eventually charge for it. I would expect this to happen sometime in the near future so get it while its hot.

I use it all the time. No catches that I can see. Plus, I really don't care if theycan see what I watch anyway....

Bait and switch in the near future. I am sure they will usually charge.

Anyone running a bandwidth monitor with Orb? What kind of bandwidth are you chugging through for TV/Video? Will it work at 1x or is EVDO or even WiFi a must?

S.

I've been ablke to stream my Tivo over 1X (on my 6600) and EVDO (on my 6700), and of course WiFi will work if the 2 others did. I have a PHAT 1.1Mbps UP link at home tho, so that helps.

I use orb a lot over evdo and it works amazing for audio and recorded video, and not that bad for live tv, especially considering it's on a phone and is free. The guys at orb claim they are never going to charge and are using a "google" business model for ads, so we'll see.

One thing that is annoying about live tv (at least for me) is that after using Orb my media center won't record again until I reboot the computer since they share the computer's tuner. I think shutting down orb through remote desktop and then starting it again may do the same thing, but I'm not sure.

All in all, it is amazing free technology, especially if you have a media center PC.

The catch is how buggy the software is. Sometimes it connects. other times it does not. My biggest problem is that Orb captures my sound card and does not let it go until the PC is rebooted.

Are you using a supported video card. I just hooked up my tv tuner card last night. I bought the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 150. It took me around 20 minutes to figure it out and get it working. I have never had a problem getting it to connect. I have been using it for my music and video's for the past 4-5 months and have never had a problem with it. Let us know how you have it hooked up and maybe we can help you get it working.

Ok, I downloaded it and started using it. I didn't know about the TiVo plug-in.

All I have to say is WOW.

My e-penis is rock hard after playing with this service. At first I was like, "Oh how cute pictures and audio". Then the TiVo plugin kicked in.....

It's a service like this that just makes the versatility of this unit shine.

Thank you all for your input.

For me at least, it really isn't buggy. The "bug" I pointed out isn't a bug, but rather a well documented issue with sharing a tuner. If you have connection issues, I would recommend reinstalling orb so that you have the latest version. Anytime I've had connection issues, that has worked for me.
