Just decided to use the Messages app to create an account to check my pop. Last time I had it set up to get 2 or 3 days, but I get a few hundred spams a day and figured it was a waste.

So today I set it up for 1 days worth. So far, thats 28 messages today. It logged in and was getting 890+ message headers (my pop account on outlook it set to delete after 7 days so that I can always get into my mail from the road via webmail for the last few days)

I was worried that I'd been spam bombed...almost 900 messages since yesterday, but apparently when that setting it configured it only downloads the messages within the last day, but still checks all messages in the system?

In brief:

Downloaded 28 messages

Check ~900 message headers

I would think it would disregard anything outside of the last 24 hours given that that was what was selected and ultimately downloaded.
