Quick text messaging on the 6700?

This is my first step back into PPC handset land, my last being a Sammy i500.

Again, i've searched and come up empty handed, maybe it's that it's just that obvious and I haven't figure out how or maybe it simply isn't meant to be.

I text 5 or 8 different people a number of times per day on a regular basis. Between my better half and myself alone, we probably send ~15-20 text's each day.

On all of my old handsets, "quick" texting was really easy. All of the people that I texted on a daily basis were on my speed dial, so if I wanted to text my girlfriend, I would simply hit 2 on the keypad, options menu, send text message and boom, away I go in T9. It took me all of maybe 2 or 3 seconds to get to the point where I was actually T9'ing the message.

So far the only way i've found is to go to contacts from the "main" (aka today) screen, use the joystick to get to who i'm looking for, hit ok on them, scroll down to "send text" on their name and go from there. This probably wouldn't be a huge issue, but i've got over 300 contacts, so scrolling down to "T" for Tiffany takes a bit. It takes me a solid 25 seconds to get to the point where i'm actually typing out the text. While we're not talking a huge amount of time, at ~50 messages a day that's ~25 minutes per day that I spend just getting to the point of sending a text message compared to the ~3 minutes I would normally spend.

And I thought the keyboard would be great, but I REALLY miss keypad'ing a message w\ T9. For most messages is super freaking efficient. I was hoping I would have been able to make up the time of taking so long to get to send a message by being faster on the thumb-board, but that's not the case, for me at least.

So what is the rest of you heavy-texter's doing with the 6700?

On an aside, I just thought of something that would have been absolutely wonderful..

Voice Command really should have a text option. IE, rather than "Call Tiff on mobile", "Text Tiff" or "Message Tiff" would take you directly to the messaging window with the contacts name in the address field.

It always seems like technology is so close, but yet.. so far.

You could assign a button, say record, to messaging, click new, and your be there.

Or if its just 5 people, make duplicate contacts for them, 1Bob, 2Bill etc, then they would all be listed in order under numbers, easy to find and send to.

I've already tried the mapping a button to messaging trick, but then it's still a pita to type the phone number in, especially when I can never remember them. I've been using my phonebooks for so long now that I barely remember my girlfriends number. Hell, at this point I couldn't even tell you the prefix of a good friend's number. I guess i'm just getting lazy.

Good call on the 1ContactA scheme, that may actually work pretty well.

Short of getting VC to beable to accept a text command, I don't think i'll ever be as fast at texting on this than I was on my "normal" phone.

All I do is type the first two letters of the persons name in the To: field and it fills the persons name in for you... hit enter you are all ready to go... no need to go through all the contacts. Hope this helps...

Fast texting

Putting those mostly used contacts in a catagory works pretty good. Then just click on the filter to bring up that group. Only thing is that I can't get my 6700 to high light more than one contact. I can highlight more than one email but not contacts. Therefor you have to click "to" every time to group them together. Is there a way around that?

I had this option until yesterday. I would begin typing the first 2 letters of a contacts name and a suggetion list would pop up. I highlight the name and voila start typing. But yesterday this all of sudden stopped working. Now when I type a name nothing. I have to type in the actual number of the person I am attempting to text. And the icons on the bottom of my today screen switched order. It was wireless manager, battery, screen rotation. Now its battery, wireless manager, screen rotation; weird. The only app I installed was SpB full keyboard, and I deleted right away, it was incompatible with third party apps.

Anybody know how to restore things to normal without a hard reset?

The same thing happened to me... seems like a application I installed messed with that feature... I have no idea why it would... but the only way I fixed it was with a hard reset and it's been working fine ever since.

Update: Thanks for the tip Bad Ash(didnt hard reset though). Did a soft reset and the auto address returned, but the icons are still in a differen order.

This WM5 operating system is weird. And I thought PALM was buggy.

All I do is use VC to "show" the contact name, then scroll to text message and your all set. It literally takes about 3 seconds to have a text message started that way.
