1x Data Service And Incoming Call

Anyone been able to get their phone to be on the 1x service and get an incoming call all the time. I get about 1 in 6. I can be on the net, and when an incoming call comes in i get the pop up window like any other call to accept or ignore. I notice that when i have my data connection made and im on IE and it is loading or surfing pages it goes to my voice mail. If i have been idle for a little while it will ring in with the accept or ignore option. Also if i have IE running and go to the today screen i can get the call.

When i have the wifi on it works fine without any issues. This is my 2nd phone as tech support decided it was my phone the first time and you guessed it... they were wrong.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this? The 2nd phone did it right out of the box without any extra software or preferences set. I have been told that this is a "known" issue. If so anyone have a patch or know when a patch might be available.

Thanks

When on 1x there is no available voice channel to get your call through. When actively transmitting data, your call WILL go to voice mail regardless. If you were using EVDO, than the 1x channel would be available to notify the phone of a call and put the EVDO session on hold to allow the call to come through

I surely hope that the sprint techs know this is how their network is supposted to work..

That is completely normal and expected behavior. When you are in a 1x area and are actively transferring data then your phone's only communication path with the tower is being "taken up" by the data transfer (hence incoming calls will go to VM). If your data connection is connected but dormant (which it would be most of the time) then calls can ring through.

That all changes when you're in an EV-DO area. Regardless of if you are actively transferring data or not, the 1x channel is still open to receive notice of an incoming call--so your calls will always ring through.

Hope that helps.

Dan

Stupid question. What is the difference 'tween 1x and EV-DO? Is it a 2.5G v 3G thing?

1x (or more fully CDMA2000 1xRTT) is technically 3G (as qualified by its data rate) but is considered by most people to be 2.5G (which isn't an official term). EV-DO is unequivocally 3G, and allows for 2-10 times the data rate of 1x.

You can get really in-depth with this stuff if you want to. Go to www.wikipedia.com and search for EV-DO and 1xRTT and read away.

A simple analogy would be:

1x is to EV-DO as dialup is to DSL
