Talking Bypass Sprint's EVDO image compression using Netfront & PIE !

Wow, I am spending way too much time on this 6700, it just gets better and better as I tinker with it.

So you know how you get crappy images from the sprint proxy server? (like when you go to google and you see a grey box behind the compressed grainy google logo) Well, lets say you want to see pictures, but the real natural picture, and dont want the ugly compressed version, or lets say you need to download album art from the net to put into WMP10, you want colorful art right? Here's a solution.

Use the following ingredients:
LATEST UPDATE: So far I like luv2chill's tip the best, "refresh the page when you want the full uncompressed image." So you can have the best of both worlds, compression for speed, refresh when you need real pics. Good tip!!
UPDATE: It looks like member Rally1 found an easy way to fix this without altering reg or changing user agent strings. I did some tests but still get some images compressed but it fixed the google logo icon...Read below and find him for instructions...
UPDATE: PIE REG HACK VERSION BELOW (if you don't want to use netfront)
Get netfront 3.3 Beta (I swear if I keep tinkering with this software its gonna replace my PIE)
http://www.access.co.jp/english/

Know the following: you need to tell the sprint proxy server you are using blazer... to do this, you add Blazer/4.0 to netfronts useragent: Blazer/4.0
read more about it here:
http://www.evdoforums.com/about1053.html
(remember, the proxy server thinks you're using blazer so it will give you true pics, but at the same time it thinks your mobile!! so you may be served mobile like sites, however you can toggle this under your browser settings when you need it, play with user agent... )

NOW LET MIX THE INGREDIENTS:

1)Open up netfront 3.3 beta
2) go to tools-> Browser Setting ->Misc tab
3) you need to create a new user-agent profile, to do this click the dropdown and choose "--" (do not click edit, it will only edit a hard coded profile)
4) Choosing "--" you can now choose edit button, this will take you to another screen
5) name the profile something like "Sprint anti image compression"

5) in the user-agent window you will see the following: Mozilla/4.08............NetFront/3.3

YOU WANT TO ADD BLAZER so it looks like this:

Mozilla/4.08...........NetFront/3.3 ; Blazer/4.0

(the ......... is so I don't have to type all that stuff so don't put ....... in, leave everything else alone and just add the ; Blazer/4.0 info)

6) click ok

Walla!! Real pictures without compression!!! Enjoy!!!

Credit goes out to the member sdphotog over at the EVDO Forums
And Netfront creators for their awesome app, can't wait for the final release!
-Oly

PS, snapshots on the way....

olywogle,

Is Netfront absolutely needed for this tweak?

Would changing the values under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\ to 'Blazer/4.0' work with PIE?

TIA

SWEET!!! IT WORKS WITH PIE!!!!

Heres the correct reg edit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Microsoft -> Windows-> CurrentVersion -> Internet Settings -> 5.0 -> User Agent

change default to the following:

Mozilla/4.0 ; Blazer/4.0

make sure to do a soft reset and refresh your browser

Thanks again for the PIE idea,
-Oly

Make sure you clear your IE cache too! But now the browser is out of whack (links are in different places) and I still see pixelation on my pictures via ORB.

Interesting- after the hack in PIE; going to www.google.com dumps you to their PDA page which is www.google.com/pda.

Yeah, we had a discussion about Sprint's "evil" image proxy server a while back on sprintusers.com. Blazer is the only user agent that gets a bye from the compressed images (inexplicably... anyone care to guess why?).

Keep in mind that your browser's user agent controls a lot about the content web servers send you (hence the google redirect). That can be a double-edged sword, however (some servers are programmed to allow only IE) so if you encounter sites that will not let you visit them (or have wacky formatting) remember that you'll need to change your user agent string.

Personally, I leave it set as the default because I like the extra speed gained by the compressed images (sometimes it's a 10:1 savings on file size)--especially in 1x areas. The image deterioration isn't that obvious on such a small screen, either. And finally, if you want the full versions of the graphics all you need to do is reload the page--no hacks or additional programs required.

But good work... I'm sure some will make good use of this tip.

If you go to google's preference area you can switch it back to HTML.

What I would like is a way to keep the compression and do a keystroke to a picture I fully want. CNN.com is much slower now that all images come in. Thank goodness for EVDO....but ya 1x, oh man, let me get some coffee while I wait.....

Well, not a keystroke, but it's pretty simple. If you want the full version, just refresh (reload) the page--voila!

This works very well, plus sites that format for a pda (i.e. slashdot.org, orb) still work properly

Are there any issues with ORB or any other services that rely on how the browser identifies itself?

yes, if you tell PIE to identify itself as something else like IE6, WMP will not play the file when Orb tried to stream music/video to it.
