Most Sprint handsets have a "call guard" feature that requires you to acknowledge a prompt before initiating or receiving a roaming call. I did both last weekend with the "R" indicator present on my phone with no nags at all (beware...). When I inquired with CS about this, I was offered a $5 roaming option to avoid the $.50/min roaming charge (requires under half of usage while roaming). I took the option since I often spend weekends in the roaming area. Luckily, the option could be added retroactively to the beginning of the billing cycle. This begs a couple questions:
1. Is the Verizon network infrastructure available via this option?
2. Anyone else surprised by the lack of a "roaming nag"?
If you travel a lot or live in a Verizon area, that $5 is a must have option. You then don't care about thr roaming nag anymore. I sometimes force the 6700 into roaming mode when I notice I have unstable Sprint signal.
So the $5 option is Verizon? Sounds too good to be true. I just RTFM and not a word about roaming... Does your 6700 nag before making or taking a roaming call?
EDIT: I see under phone, options, services, roaming the ability to choose Sprint only, automatic, or roaming only--nothing about nags.
sprints network is so large i would be surprised if you couldnt get a signal through their own towers and had to use another.
the automatic roaming will prompt the phone to access another providers tower if the signal is better, so if you follow the instructions mentioned above and specify sprint only your phone will not do that. thus you will never pay those fees.
No nag, but you should see that big R next to your signal bar. Frankly, I don't care. As for roaming, Verizon is Sprint's roaming partner in most places, except a few places that don' have Verizon. As long as there is Verizon around the area, you most likely will roam on VZ.

....
I live in the San Francisco area and work in downtown SF. In some downtown SF buildings and in the East Bay, roaming on digital VZ is a must if you spend long durations of time there b/c Sprint signal is unusable or not present.

I'm paying $5 for unlimited roaming, but sheureka says it's included with new fair and flexible plans. I need to check that out. Calling now, will report back later.
Lucked out and got a good CSR. He says there's no "on" vs. "off" network roaming. It's a semantic problem with the Sprint site. I don't need the $5 (or any other) option with fair and flexible plans. Roaming is included--period. So Sheureka, you were exactly right
