This is my second windows based phone that I have set up with my Exchange Server. I am by NO means an expert in this area but I have been able to get my 6700 to receive email as it arrives on my exchange server. Sometimes the mail even gets to my phone before it gets to my desktop.
So, I would like to try and help others in this area. Please post your questions and I will try to answer them here.

I use a self signed cert as well but I got it working. The best method I found was in this forum.
Using your desktop computer log into your owa account and accept the certificate using your browser. Then:
1. Go to tool-internet options - content - certificates. Then click on the intermediate certification authority. Find the self made certificate you use. Click on it and export it to a file. copy the file to the phone. Then browse the phone and click on the certificate. Click yes and it will install.
Thanks. Are you saying that the Mobile should be able to reach OWA as a prerequisite to Activesync. In other words, if you can't OWA then fix that first?
That's all you need for SMTP/OWA/OMA and AS OTA to work.
Do you guys have 1 or 2 servers in your enviornment? I only have one and that scenario requires some registry hacks for it to work - cause MSFT wants you to have a front end and a back end server for this to work.

I actually did that to start because i've worked with exchange and self signed certs for quite a while. Actually i was working on it again yesterday and it just started working. Not sure what the deal was. Now my only question is how to sync OTA Using wi-fi if i'm connected or 1X or EV-DO.
We have Exchange 2003 running on a single Small Business Server with OWA. We have RPC over HTTP configured but i'm not convinced it's 100% working correctly. I'll check it against the document posted here.

My setup syncs no matter what. I've seen it sync with ev-do and dial up. Not sure about 1x because I do not see it that often.
Often times computers and programs start working if they even know I am close to them. Ask my employees, when something doesn't work allI have to do is get near the computer and it starts behaving again. I will therefore take credit for your just starting to work out of nowhere.

No, just get owa to work with a desktop then we can troubleshoot the 6700.
I have no problem connecting with the Exchange Servier via USB, but when I attempt to sync wirelessly (EVDO and dialup) the connection with Exchange either hangs or simply fails to deliver new mail, though it sometimes actually sends mail. Any ideas/
Seems like a lot of confusion here. Let me summarize what's necessary.
1. Exchange 2003 with OWA enabled. Try to connect to OWA from your phone's browser; if you can't, the mobile sync won't work either.
2. Forward the proper ports to the Exchange server. That would be 80 for unsecure access and 443 for secure/SSL/HTTPS access. This is configured on your Exchange server settings.
3. Configure the device with EXTERNAL DNS name of your Exchange server. Set the proper security option (SSL checked on or off to match the server settings), and enter your domain details.
4. Sync. If it works, you will be asked if you want to enable "push" mail. If you do, you need your device's e-mail address. Also you can set up each carrier's details on the server, then the device will have options to simply check your carrier and enter your number.
It really is that simple. If something fails, go back and check each step.

Another option is to connect to your network via a VPN, and then use the internal name/IP of your server. This bypasses the port setting requirement for the router, but takes longer as it has to connect the VPN each time.

And Im not some simpleton. 3 Cisco certs, 2 Novell certs, MCSE in XP, 2000 pro and NT4, over 10 years in IT. I have managed several Linux and Novell based email systems out of my house since I was 16. I just dont have any exchange server experience as of yet, other then some account management for my work.
