The long way is to go to start->settings->system->memory->running programs, and close them. I highly recommend getting a task manager to save you the hassle. Especially a free one. I like MagicButton. It makes the X button really close apps, rather than just minimize them. It also provides a way to quickly switch between running apps.
2. it gets in the way of my PHM CPU meter unless I change the "show 2 programs and clock setting" (no big deal) [/b]
Well, you have to tell it how many icons you have on your task bar, so that it knows how much space to use. I do wish it would automatically detect it though.

1. it puts a small white line at the top of the screen that bothers me. EDIT: the line went away when i unclicked battery status.
Thanks for the info -- that white line bugged me to. But now that I know it is for battery status (line shrinks as the battery starts dropping) -- it doesn't bug me any more... actually kind of a nice way to show the battery status without taking a lot of screen real-estate.
I don't know about you all, but I can't seem to close that phone icon in MagicButton no matter what I do. If I press and hold the little icon and select close program, it goes to the phone app and minimizes, not closes, it each time. Sometimes it cycles quickly between my missed calls log and the root of the phone app and finally minimizes, not closes. The phone app doesn't show up under memory. Is this functioning as intended or is this a flaw? Other than that, I love this program!
Edit- found that if you press and hold the phone icon and select Don't Show When Inactive it goes away.

Because I want my ppc to run as fast as possible all the time. I only want programs running if I need them. Why leave stuff running in the background possibly creating stability probs if I'm not using it. Also, I find that (perhaps this was only pre WM5) with many programs running in the background, screen rotation takes forever. I come from Palm OS where apps actually close when you tell them too, and I like it that way.
I meant ths to be a reply in a thread already established below. Sorry...
Now, to give kudos about a FREE little app called "Magic Button" that closes out running programs:
I've used similar types of programs with my old HP Jornada 568 Pocket PC but by far this one is the simplest, easiest and most sanitary to use in a Pocket PC device. Works nicely!
