Initial reaction and questions
Hey folks,
I've had my 6700 for about 24 hours now and am both impressed and hopelessly fustrated.
Background:
I came from a blackberry 7100t and a PCS connection card. For a while I had used the connection card with my iPaq to get online, VPN into my network and sync with my desktop but that was just cumbersom so I went to the blackberry. I run my own exchange 2003 server but could not (and still cannot) get exchange active sync to work. I use the blackberry for personal email but sync my contacts and calendar b/t home and work computers.
Pros:
-I love the screen! Pocket IE works great as does pocket media player. When on my wifi network I can stream video at amazing quality.
-WiFi is great... I'm not in an EVDO area yet so its a good alternitive until that comes along.
-Bluetooth is also great and less crippled than the BB.
-Very capable... it can do a lot (wondering if its too much for me)!
Cons (and these are somewhat questions too, incase I am doing something wrong).
-WiFi tries to be the default connection... I went to starbucks today and when it tried to sync my IMAP mail account it wanted to connect to the tmobile hotspot and just sat waiting for me to dismiss the screen. It would be one thing if it could tell what access points were truly open, but unless I specify I think it should default to 1xrtt or EVDO (suspect this is a setting).
- Activesync... lots of issues here. With windows mobile I could at least sync contacts and calendar b/c two different PCs... doesnt appear to be the case with AS 4.1 (again, unless I am missing something). I rely on my PDA to keep my home and work calenders and contacts in sync. Is there a fix for this?
- Networking (gotta be user error / setting) when on my home WiFi network it wants to VPN out and back in to connect to local machines. I tried adding my domain name to the Intranet settings but that didn't help. It should be able to be on my home wifi network and connect to both the internet and my internal devices.
Finally my biggest issue is with push email and pricing... most of this is my problem by the way. I simply cannot get exchange activesync to work. I just installed a 2nd exchange server here at home to act as a front end and I get 404 for all of the exchange web services. My primary exchange 2003 box works great for everything EXCEPT OMA (get service unavialable). Once I do get it working then it looks like I'm at $25 for unlimited modem use and vision, plus something like $5 or $10 for unlimited SMS (to send the AUTD notifications)... then I'm looking at half as much again for my wife's new treo 650... we had unlimited data/email on our blackberries and 2000 minutes for $120/month from tmobile...finding that is going to be hard to keep wiht sprint. Then again, I was also paying $35/month for unlimited data with the connection card, something I had hoped to dropp... but I'm quasi-ok with putting that cash back into this account if it will get me the data i need.
Anyway, I just wanted to share an inital reaction and see if anyone had suggestiions for my fustrations.
