mini-SD: How best to corral issue w/ DSOD

I searched and found the following thread: http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/showt...743#post423743 yesterday after I put my new 1GB Sandisk into my PPC and without installing anything onto the card or even 'pointing' anything to be stored on the card, I started having issues w/ slowing Voice Command, to needing a pop-mini out, to finally the soft reset. Can someone take the lead in trying to identify what this issue is OR better yet, is there a Audiovox contact here who can help?

At least from http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/showt...43#post423743, and what I am experiencing, there maybe an issue w/ the PPCs ability to use an external SD, which is a HUGE negative. I challenge anyone who disagrees.

On a similar thought, is there a way to poll ALL 6700 users of this board (by username) who have a 1GB card and see if they have experiendced/or are experiencing hangups and/or slowdowns? This would be part of the foundation of building some case on this if it is a wide spread issue. For example the list would look simply like:

winger yes
curious cat yes
racedog yes
princecharm no
etc...

Don't have but had problems. After formatting the card, reversing the hack that put my IE files on the card and removing any items on the Today plug-in that reads from the disk, all is well. That said, I'd feel better if I didn't have to use any work-arounds. Perhaps you could come up with a poll. I'd be interested to know if anyone is having the same problems and not using a SanDisk.

CuriousCat. I just hardreset with the mini inside. I want to try my current base with the SD card in this before:

VC 1.5
PHM Registry Editor
Microsft Remote Display Control

Hacks:
Always on
Network Time Sync

pointing ANYTHING to the card. What pissme off b4 I hardreset was I took out the card and manuall re-pointed storing pictures back to main memory....BUT PPC could not send pictures as attachments via email .

Can you let me know specifically what you did? For example, you now let all IE cache file go back onto main memory vs. the card? What do you mean by "removing any items on the Today plug-in that reads from the disk" ?

I had used the hack described in the "PPC-6700 Tips and Tricks!" sticky and simply reversed the registry editing. The problem I was having and it wasn't just me, is that the hack would cause IE to close shortly after launching. You could stop this by clearing the cache or resetting but eventually it would come back so I went back to the way it was. As far as the Today plug-ins, I'm using SBP PP and I removed two icons that needed to access the SD card to fulfill their mission, one reported on SD space used and the other a general memory indicator. There are other programs that also use Today plug-ins and I believe the problems and solutions are similar.

I have a 1GB SanDisk in my PPC6700 and I wouldn't say I have frequent lockups, but I have noticed two different types of problems, occational and random at best. They are:

1. A couple times I've hit the power button to light up the screen, only to have it NOT display anything. I assume this is the DSOD mention above? When this has happened, I just pop the battery out of the back and put it back in.. probably the worst thing you could do, but I didn't know poping the SD out would fix it....

2. Sometimes when I hit the power button, the screen comes on, but the backlight is completely off, so you can't really see anything without shining a light on the screen. I found this problem was the backlight setting was mysteriously set to off/lowest setting. How it got there, I have no idea. The 2 or 3 times this has happened to me, I've just corrected the setting for the backlight to resolve...

Oh, as for what I store on the SD car, just pictures from the camera so far.

Hope this helps...

I exchanged a PPC6700 because it would lock up with the card in and when I removed the card it worked. The same problem occured even after a hard reset. I received the new phone and put in ther card and do not have a problem.

One note on this topic of the phone locking up. I bought several Symbol MC50 PPC and had some screen protectors left over. When I cut one to size and used it, if one of the sides of the screen protector actually went underneath the edge of the PPC6700 case I would have the same lock up problem.

I have had several issues with my phone freezing up.

Quite frequently i'll get a call at the same time my #777 is dialing out and it will lock up the accept/ignore screen for the phone call. Either a soft reset or turning off the phone by holding the hangup button will fix this.

Last night the whole screen froze up while i was on the phone using the included stereo headset. I had to do a soft reset when the conversation was over to fix it.

I haven't tried popping out the SD card when this happens. Will try that next time.

On my miniSD i store music and maps for mapopolis. I dont have any programs running from the miniSD.

I also have done a hard reset and only installed the following cabs:

CAB:\Extended_ROM\Cert_SPCS.sa.CAB
CAB:\Extended_ROM\Cert_SPCS.CAB
CAB:\Extended_ROM\IOTA.sa.CAB
CAB:\Extended_ROM\Customize_SPCS.sa.CAB
CAB:\Extended_ROM\ButtonLock.sa.CAB
CAB:\Extended_ROM\Enable_rintTone.sa.CAB
CAB:\Extended_ROM\Version.sa.CAB

I too have a mini 1gb and had lock ups after I got it. Before the card I had no problems. It took me time to figure out I can not store ringtones, programs that are accessed by the today screen, or the PIE temp files. I did a hard reset started all over installing things. I do have programs installed on my mini but they are games, and tweaks. Things that are not used often. I make sure the game is completed exited before the phone goes into sleep mode. I have many mp3 on my disk as well. I love to listening to music while I am waiting somewhere. Since I have done this I have not had many problems. I do a soft reset about every 4 days or so.

1gb sandisk. I used to have my phone lock up on me, then I hard reset and reinstalled all. Now I get the dark screen once in a while, pop out the minisd and pop it back in and all is well again.

Yesterday I did have one instance of having the storage card dissapear from view, soft reset fixed it.

I dont have much faith in Sandisk and would never have bought sandisk if there was absolutely any other choice. I have had too many sandisk cards go bad on me. I would not be surprised if the problem was the card itself, not the PPC.

Got new PPC Monday night, installed card, music file is only thing on it. I then save pictures to it. By Wed, have 5 DSODs, another 5 or so today. I installed VC and did the time sync hack and put all my contact info on (about 16 MB). That is all.

I will try exchaning Sandisk for another brand see how that goes.

I asked this once but never had a response-Has anyone tried another brand to see how it affects the DSOD problem? Like SpineDoc I have not had good experiences with SanDisk on my previous PDA and it turned out there was a bad batch of them out there.

How about I go get a non-Sandisk brand at my local Fry's Electronics? Give me a few days see if I can get to it. Pretty dang busy at work lately.
BTW - I just reformatted the miniSD (Fat32) as I had formatted it as FAT previously. I hard reset and put the card back in. See if this makes a differnce over next few days, as well...

1gb here..... san disk.
tons of issues..... couldn't even use it and sent it back for a replacment. lockups, couldn't access the card, would say I needed to format every couple hours and it came up listed twice in explorer.....
totally useless. now it won't read at all even in my laptop. can't even reognize it as a drive.
would love the space but it was really annoying.

Sounds good, BTW, mine is now formatted FAT32 and I still get, every once in a while, the blank screen that fixes by popping the SD card in and out. It happens infrequently enough that I can live with it until Sprint fixes it or we determine it's SanDisk's fault.

holding down the top button for about 5 seconds also increases the backlight...

its simple for me to get the blank screen requiring popping out the minisd - just have it go to sleep (or hit power) while viewing a picture off the sd card.

1 Gig Sandisk card working fine!

I got my card from Amazon for $59.50 and have yet to have any problems with it and I store Email attachments to it and photos, 3 to 4mb files in size!

It has not slowed my 6700 down other than the when MediaPlayer is loaded and it is turned on it askes if I want to to a scan of the card for some reason.

I would not trade the card or the 6700 for anything right now!

Thanks,
-Rod
