Can I use the PPC-6700 in England?

Sorry if this is a very stupid question but I've never travelled abroad. One of my clients used the phone in the Carribean lately but I don't know squat about Europe. I thought they used a different standard (GSM?) but someone said something about dual bands I really didn't catch much of the conversation.

Can the PPC6700 be used in England or any other part of Europe?

Thanks

The PPC 6700 can be used in Europe but not as a CDMA phone. You are correct, the European standard is GSM. No CDMA.

What you can do is use wifi and VOIP. I don't know if skype works on WM 5.0 but there was one guy who took his 6600, Skype, and a wifi card and used it at internet cafes as a VOIP phone.

Thanks - not sure I fully understand your first sentence. I can't use it as CDMA. You mention below about other options.

I guess my question should be, can I use it as a normal phone and roam to some European carrier?

Sorry about not being clear.

GSM is a mobile phone standard that is not compatible with CDMA. GSM is used widely throughout the world. In Europe the only phone system they have is GSM. There is no way to use a CDMA phone in Europe currently as a CDMA phone.

Having Wifi on your phone opens up other possibilities by using Voice over IP. Basically internet telephoney. You'll need a Wifi hotspot and a Program that does VOIP. Then you can use your phone as an internet phone. Skype is one such program but I don't know if it works on WM 5.0.

Thanks - I appreciate it. I was hoping there might be a way to use this phone on the GSM network.

Just FYI, skype will work on WM 5.0. I have installed it on a PPC 6700 and it works well.

This phone cannot be used on a GSM network because it doesn't have a GSM radio in it... only a CDMA radio.

It would be like trying to listen to HAM radio on a CB--totally different frequencies (and different ways of communicating on those frequencies too).

Bottom line: No way, no how.

As an option, Sprint does have SIM cards for frequent overseas travelers. contact them to see what you need to do to get one.

Using THAT, you could use Sprint as your carrier, with the added bennie of being able to slot it into even a HTC Universal.

(I envy you, man. The possibility of having the first Uni on Sprint...)
