imap4 and vpn

I'm confused on something. When I set up a connection, I want it to go through a VPN tunnel to my office or connect to an external interface. I assumed I had to use the IMAP4 connection for my exchange server. After you create the account, you then have to pick a connection. How do I get it to launch a VPN tunnel to the office over the EV-DO circuit or just get it to hit the external interface of the firewall and talk directly to the exchange server using IMAP4. The only option that I have for connectivity is Cellular Modem which then try's to dial into a modem, not launch a VPN connection. I'm not sure I'm describing it right but there is no EV-DO option in the connection section, just bluetooth, IRDA, cellular modem, etc....

EV-DO = cellular modem

tell it to dial #777, that will connect you to Sprint's EV-DO/1xRTT network

Is there a way to force a connection to test whether or not traffic is moving to outlook so you can trace the connection status?

I have it figured out. I have to use Sprint to send the email. Other than that, no problem.
