Hey guys and gals,
Sorry about the length of this, but I want to bring to light the fact that there are two different problems that can cause a phone to have delays in ringing, one of which was mentioned briefly at the beginning of this thread (#2), but then the subject quickly changed to the other one (#1/Slot Cycle Index). I have seen users complaining about two different problems, but from what I can see, we've only really found a solid resolution for one of them (how quickly the phone
detects the ring, by reducing the Slot Cycle Index). For problem #2, I know a few people had mentioned making sure the ringtones are not large, and not on a storage card, but several of us (myself, mabbeck, nyisles84, and UPdownLoAD) are having this problem with the default ringtone (stored in device memory). I'm hoping someone has been able to solve this problem, or at least identify the cause. Today I called into Verizon, and they are sending me a replacement phone, on the suspicion it's a hardware problem, but I'm worried that's not it.
To re-iterate, the problem is, the phone "knows" it's supposed to ring (it'll light up), but freezes/hiccups/stalls (for one or more rings) before it actually emits the ring tone. I know at least three others (mabbeck in this thread, nyisles84 and UPdownLoAD in another thread) were having this problem too (are any of you still having it, or have you resolved it)?? This problem was so frustrating, I almost sold the phone after having it a little over a week. Who cares what bells and whistles a phone has, if the phone only rings once or twice before going to voicemail, so you miss all your calls--know what I mean??
In an effort to troubleshoot my problem, I did a hard-reset, AND removed my MiniSD card, and it appears to have significantly improved, but the XV6700 at the Verizon store STILL rang out of sleep much more quickly (within .25 seconds of lighting up) than my phone does now (still 2-5 seconds after it lights up/wakes up). What I also notice is, while the XV6700 at the store pops up the incoming call bubble/window very cleanly and quickly (the whole "Incoming call" window appears at once), when mine wakes out of sleep, the incoming call window pops up somewhat jittery and sloppily, not being drawn all at once. It basically appears as if the phone is overburdened (either CPU or I/O) when it awakens, and is struggling to process the incoming call. When the phone is already "awake", it's much more agile in responding (rings almost instantly). My specs are as follows... anyone have any ideas?
Model: XV6700
Storage Card/MiniSD: Removed
Installed Software: One program--Activekitten Chronos (an alarm clock)
WiFi: Off
Bluetooth: On (delay seems reduced a bit with it off, just for the record)
ROM Version: 2.07.20 WWE
After the hard reset, with only one program installed, it's better than it used to be (the delay from light to ring WAS generally around 6-12 seconds before the reset), but it's still worse than the phone at the Verizon store. I noticed that the phone at the Verizon store also has the earlier firmware (1.0 something instead of my updated 2.07.20)... I've heard some problems with this new firmware--anyone notice this problem only after upgrading to the new firmware? I upgrade my software right when I purchased it, so I have no clue if it's related.
I've also heard people suspect that Internet apps (especially ones that do automatic updates) could be trying to seize the radio and log onto EvDO on awakening, which is what's causing the stalling on awakening, and the inability to ring. That seems to make sense. Any thoughts on that??
Thanks,
Max
P.S... This is a related thread where the same problem was mentioned:
