Did you try the http://<internalname>/oma on a desktop computer ? If it does not work then exchange is not setup correctly and it has nothing to do with the phone.
I did try on several desktops... its clearly an exchange issue.
OWA works fine, its just OMA...
I have installed a 2nd exchange server as a front end server and I get 404 on ALL exchange web services on that one...
I'm at a toss up... keep my blackberry b/c it just worked or uninstall and reinstall exchange
You may have to go back and change the ssl settings on the backend server to none and let the frontend handle all ssl requests. This what I have setup and it works fine. There's some KB's around on setting up a new SSL virtual server for OWA,OMA and EAS

Not a bad suggestion! At this point my configuration is so muddled in terms of authentication on the back-end server that I'm not sure what the defaults should be.
Any idea if I can keep my mail stores and uninstall exchange? If I thought I could then I'd re-install in a second.
i just removed the SSL cert from the backend server and have my fingers crossed...
You will need to move you mailboxes if you want to uninstall/reinstall exchange. One way to do that would be to make your frontend full exchange, move you mailboxes there, uninstall exchange backend, re-install exchange backend, move mailboxes back to backend and change frontend server back to frontend mode.

Thanks again for all the help and advice...
Doesn't look like this is going to work for me. I cannot move all my accounts and re-installing exchange would be too much.
I'm impressed with the device, but I think for phone and e-mail I'll stick with a blackberry.
one would think....
I get "service unavailable" when i use http://mydomain/oma from inside, outside, on a pc or on the 6700...
I tried building a front end server this morning but could not get any exchange web based services to work.
I am not going to remove and reinstall exchange as I have too many other uses depending on it... so i guess im stuck.
trick to it, make sure before connecting the phone to the computer for active sync that you have configured active sync with the phone set up first. Other wise it seems to be giving people the troubles they are having. I had same kind of troubles that are being reported here and doing a hard reset then setting it up on the phone and then connecting it to the computer seemed to fix all the problems I was having. hope it works for you.
I wanted to report some success!
This has quite literally preoccupied me for a good 35 hours... and I'm glad to say that I have exchange active sync working!
I relegated myself to the fact that my existing exchange server was just hosed in terms of OMA. I set out to turn my other 2003 member server, running my web and file services, into a front end server. That was actually an ok option b/c I *could* throw it in my DMZ eventually and move the file shares off and onto an internal server. After installing exchange 2003 on the server and setting it up as a front end server I could not access any exchange web services. My existing sharepoint services still worked fine. However exchange web stuff returned 404.
I uninstalled exchange and reinstalled, no luck..
I had been checking the web server logs on the 2003 box but had neglected the logging i turned on on the PPC the day before. A quick check showed that SharePoint was the authenticating service... which is not surprising and since its Kerberos aware should not be a problem. Nevertheless it set the wheels spinning. I created a new web site on the same box and exported all the exchange virtual directories to files, then imported them to the new site. I set the new site up with a cert from my CA and badda-boom, it worked!
However, OWA didn't work well... it would kind of load... 1/2 the buttons (graphics) would appear, there were issues logging in, etc. So I need to keep OWA on the existing exchange server (b/c it just works) and use the other for OMA.
Now the problem... I only have one static IP. I can get another I think, but haven't investigated yet.. think they have to put some bogus adtran router in front of my Endian router box... nevertheless, I made the changes in my DNS framing for my OWA site to point to a different port for ssl and kept 443 for OMA.
the net result: OMA works for my PPC-6700 but I have to use an external hostname... not a problem.
Now to get it working my wife's Treo 650....
The only gripe I still have is that I cannot sync more than one calendar or contact list... any workarounds?
I was there--but did a HARD RESET for various other reasons I will not elaborate on, but now having trouble getting my 6700 to sync with Exchange... again.
I have the sync working manually, but I am currently clueless about what to enter for the "text messageing address for the device" under the option to sync when new items arrive at the Exchange server. I know it has my phone number in there somehwere, but what comes after the "@" ??
