I see WM6 is supposed to come out sometime next year. In the Palm world it is difficult or impossible to upgrade the OS on a smartphone to the next major release.... is it the same in the PPC world, or will 6700 users be able to move to WM6? Would this upgrade have to be specific to the phone (i.e. issued and supported by Sprint) to work properly?
Well, it would be nice to have some idea whether a $600+ "pocket PC" is likely to be upgradeable to the next major OS version BEFORE buying the device. Or do you guys just pitch these things every year? I don't have that kind of dough.

If you are waiting for the next best thing... you will be waiting until eternaty. My guess would be no, this device would not be upgradeable to WM6 when it comes out. Also, don't trust MS release dates.

welcome to the world of high technology - your predicament is the same with every new device...it's the risk and cost we pay to be early adopters and have cool gadgets.
that being said, it's never smart to count on an upgrade to keep you current because the nature of business is that the more they sell, the more they make - and if they force you to buy a new phone for a new OS, they make more money -
if you're always waiting for the next big thing before you buy it, you'll never buy anything - there's always something new around the corner that can make everything else obsolete...
hddvd, vista, wimax, wm6? how can you buy anything cool waiting for these things to come. take the plunge - the 6700 is awesome!

Upgrading depends on a number of factors. Most phones were able to upgrade the OS. If the phone manufacturer or seller makes the upgrade available its not that big a deal. But just because there is a new version of the OS does not mean it can be applied to any particular phone.
MS made major changes in the operation of windows mobile in the upgrade from 2003 to 2005 and it won't work on most phones. A few, such as the i730, were built with the new OS in mind but it will be up to Samsung and Verizon whether or not they make that upgrade available to their users who purchased that phone.
I generally don't keep my phones all that long. I bought a pda2k last Nov. and then switched service to Sprint and bought the 6600 in March. Now in Sept. I bought a 6700.
A lot of things will depend on how you use the phone and how often you buy. One problem with this technology is that no matter what you do, the next best/newest/greatest thing will always be around the corner.
Thanks for the responses. I know there's always something better around the corner, and that doesn't stop me from buying technology now if it does what I need now. However, when you buy a regular PC you assume that you'll be able to upgrade the OS down the road, and I just wondered how that works in the PPC world. I do realize that the WM smartphone world is different because of the phone hardware dependencies.
But in the PC world, you are paying for the upgrade to the OS. In the phone world, the vendors pay that cost for you... which is why you don't see to many phones upgraded.
The only thing WM6 being available means is that the OS is available to companies to start building their next smartphone around it. It takes time and money to develop a smartphone and customize the OS for it, not like a desktop where you can just slap on a new OS and you're off and running. It makes no sense for Sprint to invest the time and money to upgrade a device that will have outdated specs by the time WM6 is released, especially when they already have your money. So no, the 6700 will in all likelihood not be upgradable to WM6.

You mean to tell me I CAN load WinXP on my 286?? time moves on my friend!
With PPC devices they are often upgradable once. But sometimes they are not. Don't live life looking at what could be, live in the moment... Otherwise it's not worth it.
The way I do it is buy the latest and greatest as fast as I can and when the next big thing arrives, I sell the one prior to someone ready for it and regain back some of my dough to buy the newer one. I bought the 6600 in Late February of this year for $600, only to sell it in September for $450.00 to buy the 6700. I have very little vices in my life so this is one that I will feed when I can.

?? I thought you stuck your employer with it and had them buy you a 6700?
Interesting to note; this is the only device with WM5 currently on the market; just released weeks ago; and already some are talking about the next operating system.... let's figure out all the hacks on this one before we go here!
You can count on not being able to upgrade. It's doubtful that after a year any particular handset will continue being sold and in case ya haven't noticed, cel phones in the past just haven't gotten OS upgrades.
If we're lucky, we get the occassional patch and that's usually only because there's such bad issues, they have to patch.
The issue is unlike PCs, cel OSs basicly need to be put together specifically for each handset. It's actual work to put together a upgrade and then hope that there's enough people who are willing to pay for the upgrade. Look how long Windows 98 lingered around after XP came out. There just wasn't a huge reason to "upgrade" to Windows XP.
Until cel phones have a common hardware reference like PCs, there will most likely never be a OS upgradeable phone.
So stop dreaming, wondering, pondering, pining, hoping, praying, daydreaming, desiring, expecting, longing and just plain wasting yours and every elses time with posts like this.
Microsoft has stated that they would like to figure out a way to update a phone's OS directly, rather than working through carriers to get this accomplished. After all, this is how it works with all other end user computing platforms. Point your phone's browser at http://update.microsoft.com and get what you want.
