cannot get Activesync to sync Active Tasks only, missing some options??
I installed ActiveSync 4.0 (which came on the CD that I got with the Sprint PPC 6700) and am having a few issues:
- I don't know if this is an issue or not, but the original synchronization (which copied over all my calendar entries (I changed this to this option) and all my task entries) took a LOOONG time!
- I can't tell ActiveSync to only copy over my active tasks...it seems there are no settings for this synchornization option (contrary to what is displayed here: http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/acti...ivesync4.0.htm) and since it is copying over all my tasks (approximately 1800) the sync is going really slow and I feel this might not only be slowing down my use of the Tasks program on the PPC 6700, but certainly taking up more memory on the PPC 6700 then necessary
- A lot of options (that are also diplayed here: http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/acti...ivesync4.0.htm) don't seem to be available to me, such as schedule, rules, etc.
Any help with these issues is greatly appreciated!
It also seems like tasks with a lot of data in the notes field are truncated...this is very annoying since a lot of the more recent data in the notes field of tasks are put at the bottom and so I can't access this information...is there any way around this? or at least another program I can use to synchronize tasks between Outlook and my PPC 6700 that doesn't truncate and perhaps provides a way to specify exactly what tasks to synchronize? Thanks!
I am also very frustrated with the way Activesync 4.x truncates the info in Contacts and Tasks. This is very important to my business. Does anyone know - for sure - can we use Activesynce 3.8 with the Windows Mobile 5.0 products??
I'm just going to put the text of the annoyance in question into here, so that others can search for it...
[Text truncated on device. Modification of these items on the device will overwrite full text on desktop.]
I think AS truncated about 3/4 of what I intended to put in there. I can't even shorten the amount of info, as a workaround - this is not going to happen, without some major change to the way AS works now.
From what I understand, this is a limitation with the built-in Outlook software in Windows Mobile 5 and nothing short of a change from Microsoft is going to resolve this...
Well, I'm glad I don't have to wait for Microsoft...
... I got it. The current limit on notes entries in Calendar and Contacts is 5k.
I know this because it's right in the registry. The key below was in the 2003 models, but the OS didn't not pay attention to this key. In Windows Mobile 5.0, there have been development changes...
This is no guarantee and I bear no responsibility because a registry hack is involved (backup your registy and device), however this works on my UTStarcom 6700...
Get yourself a registry editor... everyone in this forum already has one! I use Resco Explorer 2005 (include reg editor)
And apply this hack...
this will get you 20 kB in your notes section instead of 5 kB. That was enough for me, I have not yet experimented with higher limits. Maybe someone else can (but backup your device). Maybe I'll get time.
So, I would upload a reg file but I don't think I can here.
So, use the above modification, that is, go to the above registry key and change the BodyTruncation key to "Dec" = "20480" or "Hex" = 5000, as you see above. The former value is "5120" (Dec), which is 5120 bytes. The new value will be 20480 bytes.
Save the value. Reset your device.
I recommend something like SoftReset 2003...check Google or this forum. (Can't remember where I got it.) Or if you're going to reset your device with the stylus, wait about 3 minutes or so before you do it. As I've learned in this forum, in the Win Mob 5.0 devices, it can take a couple minutes for the device to update the registry. I don't know. It can take a few seconds or maybe a couple minutes. A lot of the SoftReset programs (also like in Tweaks 2002), will make sure the registry is up to date before resetting, or so I've heard. Seems to work for me.
Once you've reset the device, use Activesync again, and sync all your data from the Desktop to the device and you will have (if you have less than 20 kB of data) ... you will have full details in your Contacts and Calendar in the notes section (not refering to Pocket Office Notes). If you're wondering how to update the data, you would have to have all the Desktop data copy over. I couldn't really think of another way other than go through them and make a small change on the desktop, such as adding a space, and then it would sync over the "new" data to the device, taking everything over. (Maybe there's a better, quicker way, especially if you have to do it 100 times.
Of course, if you have this problem to begin with, you're NOT complaining at this point!)
If it still truncates your data, because you have more than 20kB, note whether this hack is working, because you will see that there is more data than before. If it's not working, check your steps again, because it works on mine. If it is working, but you need more, experiment with bigger numbers. (But backup your registry and data, upon each success.) Next enter 40960 (40kB) and then 81920, and so on. The more you use, the more memory it is going to consume on your device. There are limits either in the registry key or in the devices memory. Please post here if you find any limits or are successful in making higher limits work.

I don't have any problems with the truncation issue as I don't have any huge notes attached to my tasks however I can't find a way to only sync active tasks with the new 4.1 of ActiveSync. With my old PDA (older version of ActiveSync) there was an option when you right-click on tasks to only sync active ones. I know you can filter on the device but all of my tasks for the last 4 years since I started using a PDA makes the tasks app very slow.
Any luck on getting only active tasks to be transfered?

Later - God bless you all.
Seems like 20480 might be the max you can go...I tried going to 40960 and it wouldn't sync (I used MS Exchange and MSFP to sync wirelessly) and then I tried reducing it by increments of 5120 and it wouldn't sync again until I got it back to 20480 (by the way, I'm now on a Treo 700Wx)....still, 20480 is a lot better than 5120 and gets a lot more of my data onto the Treo...thanks for the hack!
Now, if only MS would fix this so we could all have ALL our data on our mobile devices...and even better, offer a good filter within ActiveSync so we could decide what data we want to transfer over (in its entirety) and what data we don't...that'd be great! Anyone know if this type of customization is offered in the new Windows Vista Mobile Center (or whatever its called in Vista that is replacing ActiveSync)?
Okay, well over a year later, we know it's called Vista Sync Center... and it has the same frustrating problem... except our little hack, doesn't fix it. If I apply the hack as before, the data in the Contact notes areas still gets truncated to 5 kb. So, we know that somewhere it is limiting it to 5 kb, but it doesn' seem to be from the same place. It ignores the registry edit. Anyone else battling with this?
[Text truncated on device. Modification of these items on the device will overwrite full text on desktop.]
[Texte tronqué sur l'appareil. Si ces éléments sont modifiés sur l'appareil, le texte complet sera remplacé sur le bureau.]
To avoid the message above, I've found this solution, using the hack of rhotic, on my iPAQ rx5935 Travel Companion under Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Vista on my computer, :
- First install the last update of Mobile Device Center: Microsoft Download Center
- Install RegistryEditor on the SDcard or iPAQ file store (but not in the main memory)
- Be sure to have a backup of your datas
- Make a Hard Reset (will delete all your datas in the main memory, but not in the SDcard and iPAQ file store)
- Run RegistryEditor first and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ActiveSync]
"BodyTruncation". Add a zero to the decimal value. On my iPAQ, I have now 51200
- Make a new synchronisation
- Reinstall all your programs
It should work for the notes in the Contacts, Calendar and Tasks but I didn't try it for the mails as I don't use it. Probably a change of the key MailBody Truncation would have the same result.
Without the Hard Reset, this solution wasn't working on my PDA as I got an error during synchronization.
And don't try to delete the key "Body Truncation" or you would have notes with 0 (zero) characters!
I was so satisfied with my old PDA under Pocket PC2003, XP and ActiveSync 4.2 ! Thanks a lot MS to make us life so simple.
