Has anybody had a chance to evaluate the performance of the 6700 as a music player, i.e. load some mp3 or wma files on the card and try it out with good quality headphones or earbuds?
If you have done so, how was the volume and sound quality? Is the included WMP10 reasonably usable on this device?
I know a PPC phone is not going to seriouly challenge dedicated music players, but I can justify the cost of the 6700 a little easier if I know I can load up an SD card with tunes and get some enjoyment from it.
I loaded radiohead on my card, I have never had an MP3/ipod player so I can't give you a comparison but I can tell you this much.... it sounded freeking awesome!
Thanks sounds like this works pretty well. Any comments on sound quality -- does the internal amp drive your earphones nice and loud, bass, treble, etc.? Is there any kind of equalizer feature available?
I have about 300 wma files on a miniSD card that I play via the headset port through my car's aux port.
About half of the files are subscription music from Napster. The subscription part is a little glitchy - while WMP 10 provides various ways to autosync, I have found I have to manually move about 50MB at a time to avoid license errors. Between each sync attempt, I have to remove the phone from the cradle and replace it.
Under the subscription model, I will have to reconnect the device at least once a month to get the updated licensing. I'm not sure if I am going to have to do this in individual chunks, or if it can relicense the device in a single update.
Another minor glitch - while the player automatically pauses when the phone is turned off, the miniSD card "wakes up" slower than the main system. If I hit play before the miniSD card has woken up, I get an error and have to restart from the Library.
I personally like the audio quality and album art displayed through Windows Media Player 10.1, but I am not particularly picky, and your mileage may vary. I also like the subscription model to be able to explore a larger variety of music than I would if I bought individual CDs or even tracks. If I don't like something I tried, I don't feel at all guilty about deleting it.
Some notes about subscription music services: I picked Napster because of the low 128kps bit rate allowed me to fit more music in the available space, and I liked the music selection. FYE has the same bit rate with a little less selection. Yahoo Music is 50% cheaper, but uses 50% more space. Rhapsody uses an "in-between" bit rate of 160kps, has a good selection, but the bugs in their software drove me nuts.
nice note on the yahoo deal because I was really thinking about that. Couldn't you convert them in some program en gross instead of individually? that would remove the inhibition to go with yahoo. i.e. convert them all to 128k for space savings.
GSPlayer has an equalizer as well as a few other "effects" and it sounds great. I can't imagine that the 6600 was noticably better, but since I skipped over that model, I can't say for sure. As discussed in another thread, I'm really impressed with the included earbuds. (loud and great bass).
Does anyone else have quality issues with mp3 playback when you press your finger or stylus on the screen when a song is playing.
Play a mp3 in any application (wmp10, gsplayer, mort player) and press your finger against the screen. When I do this the mp3 playback speed slows down and the quality is bad. Is this happening to anyone else?
Hey scott, I bet you are using pocket hack master right? I found out that even though my ppc passes the test at 620mhz that anytime i touch the screen the sound slows down and quality becomes bad. 520MHZ is the hghest I can set my ppc without it doing that.

When you say you copied them manually, do you mean through a card reader or through "explore" on ActiveSync? Doesn't DRMed media have to go through WMP10? I can get WMP10 to see my device, but like you, it seems to die halfway through the sync. Also I find the playback pops and skips when I add music this way. If I can do this through a card-reader, that would be great. I'm happy to sync a song each month through WMP10 to reset my licenses, but the current process is ridiculous. This all worked fine on my Axim with WM2003 and WMP10. Whether its the 6700 or WM5, something isn't working.
If a card reader will do the trick, can you give specific instructions (e.g. where to get the license files and where to store them on the device). I was under the impression that licenses were married to the physical device.
