Sprint now covers more airports and is in more major markets than any other EV-DO provider*. Sprint's Wireless High-Speed Data (EV-DO) service is currently available in over 100 major U.S. airports coast-to-coast, and will cover more than 400 airports by year-end.
Sprint now offers Wireless High-Speed Data in 75 markets nationwide. By year-end Sprint will be in over 100 major markets encompassing more than 200 strategic urban and suburban markets—covering over 150 million customers.
They claim this is broader than Verizon. And apparently cheaper too for PDA phones.
Their claim about airports might be true but I am not too sure about the 100 largest MSAs. If you click on any of the big cities, there is hardly any coverage. So technically their claim is correct, they cover the most cities. But in terms of area covered, I don't think they are correct. Check the map out and you will know what I am talking about.
Re: Sprint now claims to have broadest EVDO coverage
Sprint can claim to have the cure for cancer.
Fact is, the method that Sprint is rolling out EV-DO is akin to providing 'hot spots' within metropolitan areas. They do not have city-wide coverage anywhere currently, therefore, eliminating the entire concept of mobility. That may, indeed, change in the not too distant future, but their claim, based upon what currently exists, is a falacy. I seem to remember something about claims of imminent threats by WMD, too.
Actually they do have EVDO coverage metro-wide in many areas. I have a Sprint EVDO PC card. It works metro-wide in Minneapolis, Kansas City, St. Louis and Phoenix. Probably many other cities. Their coverage maps are way behind.
According to the Sprint/Nextel application, Sprint now has over 24,000 cell sites and claims they will be adding 14,000 more by 2008 or about averaging 4,000 per year - apparently 1,000+ more by end of 2005. https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsEntry/a...64392058496989
It could be more difficult for Verizon to obtain more newly developed cell sites, having to go through community approvals, etc.
Verizon admits they are planning on only 75% of sites to EVDO because of inconsistencies in network. Verizon has a mix of 800/1900mhz towers and is avoiding putting EVDO on 800 sites because 800 has much less bandwidth capacity.
Sprint has all 1900mhz cellsites and they own the network backbone to the cellsites. They are apparently quickly converting more cellsites to EVDO daily with bold claims of being in more markets.
As it applies to the 6700, let's get reports of EV-DO availability from first hand experience.

Well it's not like the laptop cards are different DO technology than 6700. We've rolled out dozens of Sprint DO laptop cards to users in our company. It's widely in use already.
But yeah, will be interesting to get feedback from 6700 users on DO coverage.
The speeds attained will be different. Therefore, the value of Sprint's EV-DO for the 6700 will be defined differently. Lastly, one can tweak port and modem settings to increase performance of PC cards. No such tweaks can be done with the 6700.

Thought we were talking about coverage not performance. But on that topic, I would expect Sprint to have more capacity for performance.
We have both Sprint and Verizon EVDO cards. Sprint does often out-perform Verizon. This is probably because there are less users per tower and that will probably remain long term as Sprint has more towers than Verizon overall.
Also, Sprint has all 1900mhz towers, which have a great deal of capacity. Verizon has a mix of 800/1900 towers and the 800 sites have such low capacity that Verizon is avoiding putting EVDO on them unless necessary.
You interjected the misnomer about PC cards on EV-DO as an apple-vs-oranges scenario. Simply allow the 6700 speak for itself on EV-DO.

Anyone aware if Dallas has real EVDO coverage yet? I see the Sprint map listed has only future coverage and the original rollout schedule posted shows Dallas as slated for city wide roll-out in September.
For PC card users, maybe. For 6700 users, not so much. Useful information would be an insider rollout schedule, rather than what may happen. Not intending to slam you, but either there is hard info or there is not. Everyone knows that EV-DO will grow in coverage. The question is when and to what geographical extent.

^damn, tough crowd. I'm reporting actual coverage and showing sources. I guess the info on 800mhz issues is info of no use. You seem to oddly think 6700 DO and laptop DO are completely different worlds. Now that's misinformation.
The 'dot' in the center of Dallas is 'actual coverage' unless you can better define it without getting into 'maybes'. Tough crowds often require evidence without supposition. We should have more of that, not less.
To spead the belief that EV-DO PC cards and the 6700 are capable of the same performance levels is either badly misinformed or disingenuous. That was my sole point on the subject.

He asked if there is coverage beyond what the map shows in Dallas. Someone is reporting there is actually additional coverage.
The Sprint maps are way behind actual coverage. This has been confirmed by many users, including myself. I've been using Verizon EVDO since last year and Sprint EVDO since June. I've switched to Sprint EVDO full time because it has better performance and equal coverage in my area.
I didn't imply 6770/laptop cards have same performance but same coverage. I was stating difference of Verizon/Sprint performance.
