So, does the 6700 have SMS? I read in another thread that it does NOT have Picture Mail and Video Mail. This makes me wonder if it has SMS. I really hope Sprint didn't disable SMS in this phone (the way they did with the G1000).
Also, does anyone know if Picture Mail and Video Mail are going to be supported in the future? This has got to be a software thing and maybe there will be a patch or something?
Yes it has SMS. The reason PM and VM aren't included is that they require 3rd party software to do their thing, and Sprint probably didn't have time to get eveything ready before release. SMS is built into the inbox so yes it's included.
Not sure if PM will be back. The PM client for the 6600 was absolute crap so if they bring it back they had better debug it properly.
Cool. I just don't want to get stuck with another Pocket PC that doesn't have SMS.
The G1000 doesn't have SMS (but it does have Picture Mail).
It kind of sucks that the 6700 doesn't have Picture Mail. They work out these deals so now I can send and receive Picture Mail with my friends that have Verizon, and now the new phone doesn't have Picture Mail. This is bad news. Hopefully there will be some sort of update. I doubt it though...
Just to explain a little further... SMS has become a standard, and Sprint took a LOT of flack for releasing phones without it a few years back. While they didn't upgrade any phones to include SMS they did begin including SMS in every phone released from 2004 on.
For them to take it out of the 6700 would be like BMW making the 2006 M5 without a radio! It's just ubiquitous now so it's not touted asa "feature" as much as it used to be.

Bad analogy. Many people looking to buy an M5 might prefer it not to have a radio. You should have stopped at the 545 at tops for your example.

Well, on that note, Picture Mail is also pretty much standard (on phones that have a camera). So it not having Picture Mail (but having a camera) means that it is entirely possible that it has an inbox but no SMS.
Sprint just recently had big press releases about their Picture Mail now being 100% compatible with Verizon, and I think Cingular as well. Pretty much all the major carriers in the USA are now 100% compatible for Picture Mail. So what does Sprint do next? Release a nice Pocket PC Phone, with a nice camera, and NOT include Picture Mail. It just doesn't make any sense to me...
SMS is much more universal than MMS. In fact, I highly doubt there is a cell phone produced today that doesn't have it. It's widely used, not only for casual chatting but also by businesses for paging and information dissemination.
I see your point about MMS but since SMS has been built into the OS since Windows Mobile 2003 (and I wouldn't expect you to know this since you apparently still have the G) it won't ever be removed. My point is that with SMS, it's now safe to assume that it will be included in every cell phone made.

P.S. Remember, Windows Mobile 5 has only been in developers' hands since May. Sprint absolutely rushed this device to market because they wanted to be first. Plus, at this point it's a business-focused device, and business users don't prioritize MMS. I would expect Sprint to release a client in due time.

You make some good points luv2chill and I hope you're right.
One thing though, SMS was built into the OS of the G as well. Sprint disabled it. But Pocket PC 2002 had natice support for SMS. There were also several clients you could install to use SMS but none of them worked with the G1000 because of the way Sprint disabled it.
So that is what scares me about the 6700. Hopefully you're right though, and it's only because it was rushed and it's targeted for business. Hopefully when they release the consumer version it will have MMS.

What does that mean for the concumers getting the first round of 6700's if they are updated to work with SMS?

Nobody knows. It could mean the same thing as it did for the consumers that bought the G1000's that Sprint disabled the SMS on. it could also mean the same thing as it did for the consumers that bought the 6600's that Sprint disabled the EVDO on.
Hopefully an update is coming, but I certainly wouldn't plan on it...
"One thing I can tell you the Treo650 "skool's" the PPC-6700 on is 2way SMS. The treo650 app is night and day better than using Outlook on the PPC-6700. "
This was stated by Siggy at my forum using a beta 6700. Thus I have to believe it's there, just not to great...

Tomorrow if no one else has confirmed I will be able to...
