Marty, I actually DO have data service provisioned - for the 6700 itself. I can launch IE on the 6700 and connect, no problem. But I get the error message when I try to use WModem to connect to my PC.
The 6700 arrived at the Sprint store yesterday. I suspect Sprint may have done this explicitly to block its use as a modem without signing up for the additional plan.
I am currently on hold for Tier 2 support to see what this error means.
Did you install the 6700 as a modem on your PC as the guide on the cd instructed?
I got that same error when I first got my phone and tried to get on the net without it having been provisioned yet. If you haven't done so already, try soft resetting your 6700. Sorry, have to ask, wifi is off as well right? No one else has this problem which makes me think its an issue specific with your phone setup. In any case, it might not be a bad idea to ask the tech to reprovision your phone.
Thanks, Marty. Soft reboot cleared up the error - Sprint tech just emailed me the same Word file as appeared on the first page of this thread. I followed the directions from there, and it works fine.
Read the whole thread....
I still can't get it to work
I installed the CDMA drivers from the CD on my PC, started wirelessmodem on 6700, plugged in USB cable....then what?
Additional questions,
Will tethering work with ANY type of connection the 6700 is on? ie 1x,EVDO, wifi?
*additionally can someone edit the FIRST post to describe the process in detail. 90% of the posts were repeats of the same question. If the first post described the process clearly...people wouldn't ask the same question over and over again or have to read page after page
aargh that thread was 7 pages long....all i got out of it was
"The unit comes with an application entitled "Wireless Modem" you simply run it and it enables the USB modem device on the PPC-6700. Windows will need the device driver from the included CD to add the modem in.
In the settings for the "wireless modem" app the following connection types exist: USB, Bluetooth, IrDA.
For example you launch the app, choose your connection type and hit the "start" button in the application."

you couldn't have just posted THAT instead???
no one here is under any obligation to provide any help to anyone. Bryan was kind enough to post the link in the first place, he certainly isn't obligated or expected to spend the extra time needed to type out a detailed response. There is also a MS word document guide included in the same folder where the modem drivers are on the cd that clearly spells out the process.
Here's another question: the USB Modem Dialer works just fine, and is the vehicle that both these forums and Sprint tech support tell me to use - presumably because both are using the instructions from the CD.
Here's the question:There is also an instance on Sprint's software download page of the Sprint Connection Manager specifically to support tethering. Ignoring the fact that it does not work (it connects me to Sprint Vision, but neither my browser nor my email will work at all), is there any advantage to using Connection Manager instead of the USB Modem Dialer, either to me or to Sprint?
It does support "optimization," which appears to be data compression, as well as some encryption. Will these help me minimize data, since I will be charged for transmission above 40MB? Will this help Sprint monitor my usage?
"Phone-as MOdem Data Pricing"
Perfect for people who use their sprint pcs phone as a modem.
40 mb 25$/mo. (capped at 70$)
>include sprint pcs vision ultimate pack
>Unlimited usage for the first month(after one month, use the mb included in your plan>
>additional data usage $0.001 per KB
>One-Year subscriber agreement required.
>requires a voice plan
and in very small print
Unless Phone-asModem Data Pricing is selected, customers using a sprint pcs phone as amodem will be charged 2 cent per kiobyte for date usage. "

that's for all the newer EV-DO phones. well, technically that's suppose to be the case for the 6700 but the 6700 doesn't contain the proper software that the other EV-DO phones have that allows Sprint to differentiate between device and laptop data use in order for Sprint to enforce this pricing. A standard $15 power vision plan on the 6700 will allow you to tether without any extra charges (as long as you don't abuse it/use it only occassionally).
Has anyone successfully set up the PPC-6700 as a USB modem on a Windows 2000 machine? I see several other people have had the issue of the connection being established, but only working for a few seconds or a few K, and then no more data is received.
If someone has done this, please upload the driver files you are using along with any settings you may have had to make.
I have my notebook tethered to my PPC6700. I connect to the internet fine, but after a while my notebook looses the connection. Checking the PPC6700 at that time indicates that it's frozen. The Today screen is dim and clicking the power button has no effect. The only way to bring it back to life is a soft reset, after which I reconnect my tethered notebook and the same process occurs again. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
were you getting very strong signal? I had that happened to me a couple of times when my speed was going really fast and then, poof, BT hanged up. I have since then blamed it on over running the BT buffer when the BT cannot handle the EVDO speed during when I get excellent signal strength.
A few weeks back I tested my BT dun between my laptop and my PPC-6700 and it worked just fine. Yesterday I tried it an was unable to get it to work again. I have re-paired the devices, validated that I have dial-up networking checked for the device. I have Incoming Port Com0 setup on the 6700. I have the Widcomm BT modem setup on my PC side attached to COM1, I am trying to dial #777, I have the WMODEM setup on the PPC6700...
Is the dialup networking option from the PPC6700 supposed to show up as a service in my bluetooth neighborhood? It is not, so maybe that is my problem; I seem to remember seeing it show up before.
Dialup networking must show up in services under the device and m bluetooth places. When you make the connection there, it will call the correct DUN profile with the modem in it.
The one change I made is to take my modem and put it on COM5, this is the same COM port as I also have under BLuetooth Serial port in my BT config, local servics.
What I am trying to find out is why Dial-Up Network is now showing up in my bluetooth places services where before it was not. Will try rebooting both devices and see if it will work then.
I have now noticed as with another poster a few back, that when I make my bluetooth connection I don't need to have WMODEM up and running on the PPC6700. Another weird thing is that even though I am connected to the network and using internet, the EV icon on my phone does NOT show that I am connected. I do not have wifi or eithernet connection turned on for the laptop, I am going though the PPC6700. Very interesting stuff.
I have tested that I can still accept calls when I am doing this and that when the call comes in my internet is not available until after the call is done.
I tried it too, same thing. The phone doesnt show it's connected to EVdo, but it clearly is, as I am browsing and wifi is off etc. WModem isnt running, and I just posted this.
Edit, to clarify, it's actually not clear that its using EVDO, as my speed test show closer to 90k up and down. The phone just shows the "EV" icon.
I ran DUN with and without WModem with my ibook. When I run WModem, select Bluetooth and hit start immediately before hitting connect on my Mac, I am able to see the connection box (yellow) and the send/receive data transfer. It also has not locked up in this configuration. When I did not run WModem, I saw the same thing that previous posters did...the computer was clearly connected to the network but nothing on the phone suggested it. The phone also locked up after 2 minutes and the only way to fix it was with a soft reset.
