EVDO in the 02910, nothing to drool over, but it's nice knowing that I don't have to pay anymore CrapSpots fees to get a wireless signal.

Yes the 6700 is sweet; after two weeks yes it is better then the 650. That's not easy to say.

Please forgive me if this has already been addressed but I have searched this forum and found no answer.
I would like to use my new 6700 as a modem for my laptop ocassionally. However, the installation of the drivers for USB connection has been difficult for me. I have the CDMA modem folder from the CD on my HDD and have right clicked the driver and selected install. I have done the same to the other two drivers at the root of the CD. However, whenever I click Start in the Wireless Modem program, per the included instructions, XP always recognizes the 6700 as an unknown device. It refuses to even let me assign it as a modem.
I have been browsing this forum since it began, anxiously awaiting the consumer release. Now that I have it I am thrilled with it. In fact. I am posting from it right now. Can someone help me with my quandry?
I remember that this is a little tricky at first. It's important to run the software on the PPC 6700 BEFORE you connect it to the the PC. It basically changes the phone into a modem. Windows then should recognize it as a "network card" and allow you to install the drivers (or maybe the drivers should have been installed first? I don't remember this part).
Read the instructions carefully and follow them exactly. I don't recall exactly the order, but it's easy to screw-up. The drivers are located on the cd in an obscure folder.
I actually encountered this problem as well. Try this.
Close wmodem. Then, turn the phone, not the pda, off. This wil cancel any vision connection. Then, restart the phone and open wmodem. The Connection box should be neutral in color like the other boxes. If it is yellow, wmodem will not connect.
Since you have the alwayson hack, I'm not sure if that will change anything.
Just a clue for some of the problems mentioned in the last few posts.
When using usb connection, you need to start the wireless modem and hit "start" using usb BEFORE connecting to usb cable to the computer. This way, the usb cdma modem driver will load up correctly. When finished, disconnect the modem connection from the computer first before unplugging the usb cable, next disconnect the usb cable and lastly, stop the usb wireless modem on ppc.
seriously, there is no point to having this function if it isn't easy to use. I've never got it to work on my laptop. I got it to work on my desktop first try, and it was impressive, but it only worked once. the rest of the time it keeps saying "usb device not recognized." maybe someone could come up with a program to make it work smoothly and contain the required drivers because if it isn't easy to use without starting and hooking everything in up and disabling programs in a certain order (and only then it MIGHT work), then the system is a failure. these devices are fun, but some people ned the reliability for work purposes as well.
When I hooked up the USB connection using the 6700 and my laptop I didn't disable any drivers, remove any programs or do any of the things you describe. I followed the directions given earlier in this thread and made the connection. There are always going to be small quirks when using technology devices. You need to learn a little patience or take up something that doesn't have a learning curve or require a learned expertise.
Go back, print out the directions and the hints here and just take is slowly and have a little patience. Take a problem as a learning experience and it will be a lot easier. Nothing makes things worse than a building frustration and loss of patience. Good luck!
You need to go back and print out my posting so you can reread it - taking your time so that you understand its full meaning.
The point was that there are major problems with the ease of use of this ppc for dun. PDANet for treo worked flawlessly. The ppc seems to be hit or miss for a lot of people. There are six pages of issues here to support my position.
Please keep in mind that tethering the phone to use as a modem is not the primary purpose of the 6700, neither is it a feature that Sprint advertises, nor is it a feature that Sprint endorses. Given the facts, users from this forum and around others found ways to allow it to happen. No, it is not really plug and play and yes, it requires certain steps for it to work but it works pretty reliably if certain steps are followed. Do the steps fail every now and then? Yes, of course. Even WM5 has bugs. And now, you are combining it with a phone and an application that the vendor does not officially support? What do you think? BTW, don't leave out the idiosyncrasy of W2K's and WinXP's loading of usb drivers. If you absolutely want the least hassle way to get EVDO on your computer, go with the connection card and pay an additional $60 per month (provided you have an active Sprint Wireless voice phone). Money can buy some convienience in this case.
USB and Bluetooth DUN both work well for me. For Bluetooth, I don't have to use WModem on the PPC.....My laptop isn't bluetooth enabled - I have a USB Bluetooth adapter and just use the DUN software for the USB adapter on my laptop without using WModem....For USB I do notice most of the time I have to wait a while for the USB modem to be recognized after starting WModem.
History: 6700 received yesterday, wouldn't sync via USB. Firewall turned off, now it syncs and connects reliably when I restart the computer. Moved on to trying to get the tethering working...
Now: When I start WModem on the 6700 and click "start" I get the message COM OPEN ERROR on the 6700 and my PC says "USB device not recognized..." and the USB connection crashes to the PC
WModem help says something about deactivating ActiveSync but I can't seem to figure out how to get it turned off.
I'm getting the same "COM OPEN ERROR" when I try and start WModem with USB. It doesn't occur when I change the connection type to IRDA or Bluetooth. This sucks
It is funny reading all the issues everyone has setting up DUN on their Windows machine and how hard it is to actually use.
I got the phone yesterday. I have Tiger 10.4.3. I did the simple bluetooth pairing. Used Internet Connection and set up the #777 dialing and then I click connect.
Man this is a nice little phone and EVDO is great!
People rarely post when everything works fine. It's only common sense that what you're going to be reading here are the people who are experiencing issues. Usually the issues that are widespread have large threads and those that only happen to a few (usually self inflicted) have smaller or very small threads. In any case I'm not sure why you would fine other people's distress to be funny? One of the primary purposes of these forums is to help each other not to laugh at each other.
I am just a very recent Mac switcher and I do find it funny now when I see all the issues Window people have...
Don't take offence. I still use Windows machine every day in my job. As most of my server are windows based.
I am just pointing out that there are other options...rather than bashing the phone and software like some people are beginning to do maybe they should look at their setup. There are other options out there.
I would be more than glad to help people fix things. I have been using PPC devices ever since the first XDA came out.
Also, not to say the Mac is without issues. If I did not have Exchange to sync to I would be out of luck as Virtual PC does not work with any WM 5 device yet. There is also no Mac sync software that works with it either.
There may be a new problem here. I got my PPC-6700 today. When I attempt to connect to the PC using WModem via USB, I get a message: "Could not prepare vision services, please initiate IOTA on device and try again later." Tech support at Sprint told me earlier that the 6700 would block usage as a modem if I did not augment my "Power Vision Ultimate" package with the "Flex Power Vision Data Plan." Perhaps this is how that is done?
Also, although I had the WModem program in the 6700, I did not have the usbmdm.inf or usb_modemdialer.exe files that the manual said were required.
I am getting confirmation from tech support as soon as I get through.
that means your device has not been provisioned yet (all Sprint phones need to be provisioned to get any sort of data access). if you try to get on the web using pocket-IE, you should get the same error message. just tell the tech to please send the signal to have your phone provisioned for vision. you don't need to augment your plan with anything. what tech support told you was wrong, btw. you will also need to follow the directions in the manual for installing the usbmdm.inf file on your PC laptop.
