I don't understand why you don't just call up and add Vision? It's only $15 a month, and with your company discount it would be less than that. It's pointless to add the PAM plan with a 6700 - Sprint doesn't know (or care?) whether you're using data from the phone or tethering.
I'm a first time poster, a PDA-Phone newb, and newly minted VICTIM (of my own stupidity), I think
Here's my story: I just went and bought a PPC 6700 on Sprint's website (using my company's employee-discount entry to the site), thinking I was getting a low-minutes plan and PCS Vision, so that I could tether the phone to my laptop occasionally.
BZZZZZZT!
Somewhere during the ordering process, the site removed my selection of PCS Vision, and before I realized it had done that, I had already agreed to buy the device and the minimum-minutes plan (200).
Assuming the deletion was intentional (and I think it was), that means I can either pony up the monthly fee ($37 with my company's discount) to add the PAM service, or go without any data access at all. I tend to think that's too much money, atop the charge for voice.
Yep, after all my careful research, I ended up screwing the p**ch after all. Guess I have 15 days to make sure, before I send it back, though.
All you need is to add a Vision plan, which you can do at any time. See the posts a couple of pages prior to this one with clear directions for set up. No PAM plan or special software required. Works perfectly.

Okay, this may be a stupid question, but I'm sure someone here knows the answer...
I have my phone set to check my e-mail every 15 minutes. So, before I tether and run WModem.exe, I make sure to stop the data service. However, every 15 or so minutes my phone will beep or buzz at me telling me that "Data Call Failure. Error Code: 1010. Data service is not available when device is in thethered and Bluetooth Dial up Networking mode"
So, i understand why this is happening. It won't let me use my data on the phone to check e-mails and syncronize with exchange while I'm using it as a tethered modem. But is there a way to keep the annoying error from popping up? Am I missing a step somewhere?
i had this working before, and now it isnt, im getting discouraged, when i start the modem up, it doesnt connect, none of the boxes light up... if i start up IE then the box for connection lights up, but as soon as i click connect it says end data call first.....

hmm any help?
Are you ending the data services before you bring up WModem?
as I posted before, this is what I do:
Turn off Data Service on PDA
Start Wmodem on PDA
make sure USB is selected in Wmodem, press start
Plug USB cable into PDA & PC
Open CDMA Dialer program on PC
Make sure required info is filled in dialogue box (user name, password)
HIT DIAL (mine for some reason will tend to cancel out if I just hit the enter button on my PC's keyboard)
Whenever I have problems, I make sure to close down wmodem and/or CDMA dialer before trying again. Usually if I follow the steps religously, it works fine.
Worst case, try a soft reset of your device and reboot your PC and try it again in the order I have outlined above. If you got it working once, it should work again...

I follow these steps as well and it works FLAWLESSLY on my laptop (Dell, running XP). It is my only internet connection right now and I use it daily. In fact I even hit "enter" and it works fine
My problem is that I do this SAME EXACT THING on my PC (custom built, still XP), and it won't connect. I've spent hours trying to force it and it always errors out one way or another. I would LOVE for anybody to tell me how to do it?
Also, I recently got a bluetooth keyboard and it came with a USB bluetooth adaptor. Can I use that same adaptor to tether my PPC to the computer as a modem? Do I just click "bluetooth" instead of "USB" in Winmodem?
Just an FYI, I am now finally connected using USB.
I followed the steps found in post #442 in this tread.
Installed the INF modem to my laptop (Dell E1705 laptop and XP)
Run WModem.exe (Wireless Modem program in the Start menu)
Chose USB in the dropdown and hit Start.
Plugged the phone into the laptop via USB.
Went to the EXE found in Post #442 to run on the laptop.
NOTE: Entered my cell phone number (Sprint) and password I use to login to my account on sprintpcs.com
#777 as the number
Click Dial
And it connected at 230.4.

I don't know if it really matters, but you don't need a user name and password. I would personally not use them as its just another possible flag to pop up.
I thought the same thing, but it gave me an error 680 without it. I noticed in this thread that it went from yes to no to yes now to no on whether you need the username and pwd. I guess the advice is to try both and whichever works...use!
I have a Dell laptop with Windows Vista Ultimate. Last night I tethered my 6700 with the lappy and it worked like a charm. Here's what I did
1. Enable bluetooth on phone.
2. Enable bluetooth on Windows Vista.
3. Set up passkey connection between the two devices
4. Create a new DUN in Vista, using #777 as the number, no user or pass
5. Start Wireless modem on 6700 with bluetooth connection selected
6. Dialed the connection in Vista - connected instantly
7. Surfed at broadband speeds on my lappy. Went to DSLReports.com and did a test, showed a fast connection.
I am happy but don't plan to use DUN unless I cannot find a wi-fi connection. No point in getting Sprint up in arms with my vision only plan.
Tethering via USB works fine for me when I'm in my home Sprint area; no username or password required. But I've just tried tethering in a Sprint area outside my home and I get a username/password incorrect message.
Has anyone encountered this particular difficulty? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but i would appreciate any help given.
I have a ppc-6700 and i have just discovered dun over bt and it works flawlessly. somebody told me that it will charge me by minutes and i wasnst sure. I signed up for Sprint Power VisionSM Plus Pack and i think that gets unlimited internet usage.
Please let me know if i will get charged per minute
Sorry, I don't have much time to read through and see if anyone has posted this before, but similar to the post above about tethering to Vista via BT, has anyone done it via USB? Any problems? What's the process? Does it need the Sprint CD for the initial install?
I m new to the forum and i would like to thank everyone who have contributed so far to the forum. You guys have really done amazing job.
I have a the following problems whenever i m trying to connect the phone as modem to my latop
Here are the details
Phone: Sprint PPC 6700 running Windows Mobile 5.0
Plan: Spring Power Vision Unlimited Internet
Laptop: Windows XP
Problems:
1. The Laptop doesnt always recognize the mobile phone as a USB device. I have the Active Sync and the data call off and have started the wmodem program (with the start button pressed) and connected via USB.
2. Also when once in a while when the laptop recognizes the modem and connects at 260.4 K all the time. Also once connected the modem shows data being sent however the received bytes are always 202 bytes.
I dont know if any other users also had this issue or not. Can some one please help me.
Also i remember calling Sprint once and they asked me to reset my MSID or so ... using the ##00356# or something like that code thru the phone. I m thinking did this prevent my phone from connecting and able to use it as a modem.
Please help me. I need to use laptop all the time and would luv to have internet anywhere.
OK, so my phone used as a modem worked great for the longest time (EVDO - CDMA-USB). I dropped by Verizon card (WLAN - EVDO) and decided to just use my Sprint PPC 6700 as a modem.
That is until I got a call during an EVDO Modem session and it somehow confused my modem or PC. It always ask me to "End the data call first" when I start WMODEM on the device. However, if I do this the "yellow" start button goes grey and the modem is not recognized by Windows (XP Pro). If I try starting the CMDA dialer, it does nothing. All my drivers are present, and there are no hardware conflicts (and active sync is not on this PC).
Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this? I don't feel like going back to the older ROM version, but if the problem is the latest ROM upgrade and "EVDO call thru" is working during a WMODEM session, them I have to assume this ROM feature caused something in the drivers to get screwed up.
Thanks to all for the good info on this site. I wanted to chime in with what I eventually found to be a VERY EASY process. That was at least after I quit wasting time w/sprint tech support. I was looking to get my phone working as a wireless modem w/my laptop. I finally found a site that had everything I needed to get going.
It includes the Driver, dialer application and a word doc w/screen shots walking you through it.
ONE BIG THING I LEARNED.... on the dialer it asks for your username and password. the username is easy to find by looking at the network connections on your phone. however the password is all ******** . I called sprint to get the password and he told me I needed to spend 39.99/ mo to get the phone as modem capability. I was a little confused since I already have an unlimited data vision pack why I needed to spend more..... blah blah blah.... so what I did was connect my phone per the word doc instructions. open the dialer application, entered my username, the #777 dial in number, left the password blank, and hit connect... IT WORKS GREAT.... I am flying around the internet as we speak.
Well mine used to work flawlessly on my work pc and my qosmio, the work PC usb and the qosmio BT, now both give me a error 680 error, and i cannot get it to connect either way to my new work pc. it wont take the driver.
All are XP by the way.
Any ideas what changed or what im doing wrong?

I don't know if this helps but I have noticed that I get the same error if I connect my phone via usb to my computer prior to starting the wireless modem on my phone.
Any one can please help me with my problem mentioned below ... i would appreciate.
