Thinking about the 6700

Hello, I recently stumbled across the 6700 and have been reading some of the posts. I was looking at the reconditioned one on e bay and it looks like a cool phone. I'm wondering, is it still a good choice or are they past it? Also, while I'm not a total moron, I'm not exactly a techy whiz kid either. Is this phone for an experienced hand or could a 50 something (quit counting) mr avg that can do reasonably well on basic computer tasks use this thing, or will I be contemplating suicide soon after getting it? : )
Any sound advice appreciated!
Thanks!

I have had a 6700 for several years. What was once state of the art has aged considerably. With the current deals offered by all carriers, I'm not sure that it represents much of a value, but if you're stuck in a contract and looking for an alternative perhaps it may make sense. It is Windows Mobile 5, which by now is an old operating system; though even the latest 6.5 is dated compared to most other mobile operating systems. Because of the WinMobile operating system a stylus will be needed for many functions; even one handed dialing can be a challenge. There are workarounds, if you do purchase one you can find most of the tips in this forum.

Good Luck,

Mike

welcome to the forums!

you are ready to "phone home" eh? well this is your home calling!

the above post makes great points. the phone is obsolete and support form the carrier is super limited at best. the phone you may get from fleaby could have been dropped, could have other damage internally, battery could be at its end of life.. etc etc.. there is no way to know all of those concerns until after you purchase it.. which i think is a gamble. sure you can get top notch information and support from this forum, but if your not up to the task of editing the registry and testing things out in the Windowms Mobile world, this outdated phone may not be the one you should try.

there are many many many new phones out now that are leaps and bounds better then the 6700 all with faster everything!

may i ask are you stuck on wanting a windows mobile device or are you open to any platform? im on Sprint and there are many new phones out featuring the android OS (which is Google's operating system--yes they are creeping in our lives everywhere they can! ) and you have Palm products and blackberry products. i guess it just depends on what you need out of your phone.

do you need a physical keyboard or does it matter?
touch screen?
bigger storage card allotment?

etc etc..

if you are set on the 6700 then thats one thig but let us know what you really want. and hey if cost is a factor then that also plays a part..

Thanks for the replies, I'm not really set on any platform right now. I'm looking to keep costs down due to cutbacks at work and right now I have a low priced contract which is sufficient for my needs. I was looking for Wi-Fi, a camera and music capabilities and not much more. I read a post someone else commented on about Sprint charging for WiFi capabilities which I agree makes no sense since it isn't their system. So that's where I'm stuck. If I wasn't on contract till next July I might have wandered from Sprint but not sure where. I really can't justify a big phone bill now so I'm looking at the aftermarket. Your replies confirmed my suspicions about the phone, old and possibly not very useful.
I appreciate these forums, I'm on a couple of others, one of which I'm considered an expert!
I'll have to keep my eyes on Sprint, maybe they have one that I can get without upgrading my phone bill too much.
I have a credit so most of their phones are free or under 50 except the ones at the bottom of the list. I'd rather pay for the handset up front than get the monthly "stick it to ya".
The guy at the Sprint store could get me into most of the phones at no cost at all which the website didn't do, so I need to look some more.
As for a key board, an organizer in the phone would be nice, I'd rather type on a full keyboard that push three times to get the letter I want.

there is no way sprint can chage for WIFI, i think you or the poster got their info wrong. they will charge you for tethering (using the phone as a modem) but using wifi? no way...

on screen keyboards a la the iphone, work really well. i not talkng about T9, which is what you are referring to there.. but these new phones do have full screen QWERTY keyboards.

the 6700 has organizer software to keep track of your items.. many of these phones do and the "smartphones" have them as well.

virtually any smartphone will have wifi, BT a camera and music so that wont really narrow things much.

if you want to get a phone then decide on what you can get for free or for real cheap at your local store then come here and ask us our opinions if that will help.
