Problem changing DNS server on my 6700

One of Sprint's DNS servers (68.28.122.93) is down/having problems (confirmed by Sprint yesterday). So, I wanted to change to a different dns server. There are two ways to do it, and both have failed for me. I'm hoping someone can shed some light. (I search the 6700 forum for dns and came up with no hits.)

Method 1: Attempt to change DNS registry entry:

I ran PHM Regedit and went to My Device -- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -- Comm -- Cellular Line -- Parms -- Tcpip. I clicked on the "Tcpip", and saw the entry for DNS. I changed that entry to be one of the free dns servers out there by putting the DNS server IP in the Value data section and clicked OK. The value was changed when viewing the registry key. And, in fact, I could now browse quickly. But, within a few minutes, browsing was slow to connect to a server again. Reason? I checked the registry, and the registry reverted back to having the old DNS key entry! Why?

So, I tried again. And then did a soft reset. DNS registry key reverted back again. Even though I saw the key was set to my new one before soft resetting the phone.

How can I save the setting to survive for than a few minutes or survive a reboot?

(and with that method, does anyone know how to add a secondary, or even a tertiary server?)

Since that didn't work, I moved onto Method 2:

Method 2: Adding DNS servers to the network connections settings:

I went to the 6700's Settings, chose Connections, and then chose "Manage existing connections". Once there, I saw "Sprint PC Vision #777", and clicked Edit. Then clicked Next, and Next again. This took me to a Username page. It was empty, and I left it empty. I clicked Advanced, and at the bottom of that page, clicked Servers. I checked off "Use specific server address" which allows me to set a primary and alternate DNS, which I did (setting them to free dns servers). Clicked "ok" a the top right, then clicked Finished. It brought me back to the #777 page. Clicked ok at the top right.

However, if I go back to Edit mode, and get to the Servers page, it has reverted back to "Use server-assigned addresses"! It forgot the changes I made.

(Tried that several times. Tried leaving the entire #777 page as well (to get back to the main Connections page), but it still forgets the settings.)

Can anyone help me to get the phone to save the changes?

Now, eventually I'm able to get both Methods above to save, which one does the phone use by default? The registry key method or the "use specific server address" method?

And finally, does anyone know how to find out not only the primary dns server that the phone is using, but the secondary (and tertiary, if there is one?)

(BTW, anyone else experiencing a problem with the Sprint DNS server I mentioned at the beginning of this post?)

Thanks in advance!
