XV6700 - can i use wifi without a verizon plan?

my friend has an xv6700 that he's not using any more, and i was considering using it as a standalone PDA (with no verizon plan of any kind). i can't get wifi to work; when i search for SSIDs it just sits there saying "scanning network" and never finds any wireless networks, even though i can see several with my laptop. if i try to manually enter an SSID, it just says "connection unavailable"

i called verizon tech support, and they said that wifi will not be enabled until it's on a data plan, or a voice plan with a pay as you go data plan.

is there any way to get wifi working on a xv6700 without a verizon plan? i tried to do a hard reboot, and before it installed the verizon "customizations" i soft rebooted, but i still can't use wifi

any ideas?

Yes, you can use WiFi w/o any VZ data plan. No problamo. Not to ask a dumb question but you did go to the comm manager and enable WiFi didn't you?

Rule # 1, never listen to a VZ customer support. It's more like you need to poll a few and take the group consensus. They've probably steered most every user on this board wrong at least once.

thanks for the reply, Trehouse. indeed i did turn on the wifi, and i also tried disabling the radio because i'm unsure if this phone was purchased prior to the wifi/radio simultaneous update.

you're not kidding about verizon steering folks wrong... the first tech i talked to said the phone was dead and i "had to buy a treo in order to sync with outlook", my jaw dropped at the stupidity of this guy. the next two techs i got said i had to get a data plan in order for wifi to be activated.

i guess it's possible the wifi card is faulty. i doubt this thing is under warranty, but i'll give ut starcom a buzz and see if they have any ideas.

thanks again

I just got rid of my XV6700 so I can't fiddle around with the settings for you. I do remember that it was not uncommon for the Wireless LAN utility to not show any local networks but a soft reset would always clear up that issue.

I wonder if when you soft rebooted before the customizations ran there was an issue. You must be running a new ROM to be doing this. As you wouldn't have known to stop customizations I guess you're past that.

Yes VXW CSRs are full of it, they no very little when it comes to a phone like this other than telling you how to press talk and end

Yes it can use WiFi anywhere (802.11b only) and you can normally pick up free or unsecured hotshots almost anywhere now-a-days and WiFi has nothing to do with VZW or a data plan

Blackberries suck major balls in my opinion, but thats my opinion.

Having a private network not broadmast a SSID has nothing to do with WM5 or WM6. That is a feature in the router itself that basically says "hey, Im over here, come connect to me or hack me".

Hope this clears everything up for you. If not, PM me.

No. VZW cannot charge you for wireless WiFI usage as it is not on their network. That being said, make certain that you are on WiFI and not the VZW data connection. You'll be fine.

Good Luck,

i finally put an end to this question. basically every day i would call verizon and ask if they would temporarily (as in, like for 10 minutes) give me a data and voice plan on the phone so i could test if wifi would work. finally i got a friendly tech who would do it, and she even asked her manager and the manager was cool with it. the result? WIFI DID NOT WORK WHEN I WAS ON A VERIZON DATA PLAN... which means this phone is most likely having a hardware issue since i've done everything under the sun to try and troubleshoot the software.

so last night i picked up another xv6700 from craigslist for $75 (the shell pretty beat up, and the screen has a small scratch but it works fine). i had the guy meet me at starbucks so i could test the wifi while it's not on a verizon plan, and what do ya know, WORKED JUST FINE!!!! so that verizon tech who told me i had to sign up for a verizon data plan was essentially lying.

I just got my 6700 a couple of weeks ago. The guy on eBay included a mini SD card that has a bunch of different iPhone themes and I put one of them on using rlToday. The browser I had been using was the Picsel Browser which is much nicer than IE mobile but a couple days ago I installed Mini Opera which is even better. I was just curious about Opera because whenever I use it it asks if it can use airtime until I'm done using it. What does this mean? I only browse the internet when I'm connected to wifi somewhere so I don't have to pay an arm and a leg for VZW's ****ty data. Is Opera using my wifi or am I going to be charged extra for using it even though I'm connected to wifi? I know Picsel only works from wifi and IE asks if I want to connect to VZW's data network if I'm not connected to wifi, which I always say no to. I just don't want to keep using it if it's going to cause me to pay a lot more money because it's not worth it. Thanks.

Keep in mind the 6700 is 802.11B and not G so it will only detect B and NOT G. Plus the SSID must be in broadcast mode. VZW CSRs are retarded by nature. Thier QAs obviosly do not monitor thier calls as all the info I have EVER been given by them is incorrect.

You have already done eveything you nned to do to get the WiFi working, which is basically turning it on. The only thing after that is you must find a WiFi spot that is 802.11b.

The VZW customiztions have nothing to do with WiFi. WiFi is hardware in the phone and not controlled by the carrier in any way.

Thouht I had a router that was backward compat, guess not since I have same problem, worked on by 802.11b, upgraded to G and not working now. Also upgrade phone so just want to get the XV6700 wi fi working only just like yall. So guess since the G is not working, guess I could try hooking my old B back up along side the G?

I thought that would be an idea, try to hunt down a hot spot thats still B some coffee shop whatever, that could be a long search, huh? Do one of those little gadgets that seeks hot spots tell you if its B G or N whatever?

linksys routers that are G are also B so if you have a linksys router you should be good to go.

maybe there is a mix mode in your routers setup page that lets it broadcast G and b....

I have cricket service, does the internet work with a ppc6700? Can't seem to figure it out and I can't get a cricket tech support to answer. I have no owners manual to help me either. Any suggestions?
