PPC6600 EVDO Update??

i called audio vox in new york this morning. this is what they say will happen with the ppc 6600.

1. they will be issuing a ev-do upgrade soon. it will be offered thru their website.

2. there will be no wm 5 upgrade for this device. it wont work with the hardware.

3. there is no decision yet on an upgrade to media player 10.

4. an sd wifi will work with this device.

i suggest anyone who has technical questions call audiovox directly.

No.

Battery life is a direct function of three things:
1. Backlight
2. CDMA radio
3. Bluetooth radio

If you want more battery life, you reduce your usage of these three things.

If you want less battery life, you increase your usage of these three things.

So will this be a Radio upgrade or a ROM? i.e. I would love for it to just be a radio, so I can keep WMP10 and get EVDO.

I beg to differ.

I held one with WM5 in my hand. I asked the guy behind the counter at Tech-Ed 2005 if this was a blueangel and he said yes.... I even took a picture.http://www.flickr.com/photos/pjmorr/17884750/

A number of reports on EVDO availability via verizon on the i730 is increasing battery lifespan considerably.

Looks like the i730's power handling capabilities when on EVDO are a bit more advanced than the 6600's.

That's #2.

1xRTT uses the CDMA radio to consume a full channel of bandwidth (130Kbps max). EVDO uses burst frames of data and doesn't leave the radio full on.

Edit: No, I don't know how EV manages to get more bandwidth in less radio airtime... it just does. I suspect it's something akin to how the old modems got 2400bps... and the new modems get 56Kbps (at 2400 baud) all on the same line. But I don't know. This is just an analogy. I was just explaining that the CDMA radio uses power, and EVDO uses less power by far than 1X.

With no 'Official Word' from Audiovox yet, considering all the talk........ I am thinking we will NOT see the EVDO upgrade.......
But I really hope I am wrong!

I find it curious that the 6600 series does not seem to have any significant power savings that the i730 is enjoying with EVDO coverage that I've been able to detect. Just to cover all of my bases, I think I'll call vzw tomorrow to be certain my phone is provisioned correctly for EVDO.

Check out the *many* threads on 1x areas turning to EVDO. In the interim the users report HUGE power usage. Then once it goes EVDO they report negligible power usage.

That's in this, the 6600 forum.

Actually, the highest "baud" rate is 9600. After that, higher data throughput rates are achieved using various data compression algorithms.

Negative. The highest baud rate is 2400 on US phone lines. The 9600 is achieved through qam and qfsk.

Look for "Baud"
http://searchnetworking.techtarget.c...213282,00.html
Look for v.32
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO-23.html
Look for greater than 2400

Look for 2400

I've read the former. Haven't noticed the latter. But, I'll look into it further. Thanks.

don't want to sound like a noob, but I think ehud is right about the baud rate.

racedog, baud rate is the number of phase changes the signal does in a second. I'm pretty sure the hardware we use in northamerica is only capable of 2400. Higher than that is just more bits per cycle, not compression, unless we start talking 56k v90 or v91, etc (and assumeing we're talking analog phone lines).

QAM or Quadtrative Amplitude Modulation, uses four phases instead of one, on the same line to achieve a 9600 baud, even though the equipment is still operating at 2400 baud, but times 4.

But then again, I could be talking out my rear end. My father is an electrical enginer with the phone company here. I'll ask him tommorow. I don't mean to help this thread stray farther off topic. It just seems everyone likes to correct ehud.

edit: It just seems everyone likes to TRY to correct ehud

1. XV6600 already HAS EV-DO.

2. Jury is still out on WM5, get mixed signals, but doesn't seem too likely due to hardware. Plus, it makes more sense for carrier NOT to upgrade, rather, to sell another phone!

3. Already have WM10 via 2.03 ROM update from Ehud's site.

4. Many on this forum already have WiFi SD working and have for quite a while. Just need right SD card and right driver.

I also wouldn't trust Audiovox techs. Seems they are LESS informed than members of this forum! I have asked a question from one tech, hung up, called back, asked another tech the same question, got totally different answer, hung up, called back, got another tech, asked the SAME question, got a totally different answer!

This above procedure has been repeated several times when I have a question from these guys. It's just about useless to even call....

Totally agree......... the last time I spoke to one he asked ME questions...... and I answered with info he didn't have/know.
The 6601/00 can have EVDO, no question......... but will Sprint get their head out their butt? God I hope so....... my service is down in Los Angeles today........ and was hoping for a magical fairy that installed the new ROM and EVDO update to my phone and I just needed to call and activate it........

No such luck...... service is just down......
