Wireless Data Modem via BT or USB

I've seen many articles on how to connect my XV6600 to my laptop via Bluetooth or USB data cable to use as a modem but I've had no luck.

I just purchased the USB cable from pdaphonehome.com. I connect the phone to the laptop and it prompts me for the drivers. Someone previously provided me a link to the drivers on geekzone.com but they do not work and won't install.

When trying to connect using bluetooth, the laptop connects to the XV6600 and the PPC prompts me to accept or deny the connection. I choose accept and approximately 30 seconds will pass and I get the following error.

"Error 777: The connection attempt failed because the modem (or other connecting device) on the remote computer is out of order."

I then have to reboot the PPC in order to regain Internet connectivity on it.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as this was one of the features I was most interested in when purchasing the phone. I would prefer bluetooth but would take anything at this point.

Does anyone know if one is faster than the other?

Thanks for your help.

Pair the device with the laptop first. Then go into the Bluetooth settings and remove confirmation for paired devices

Also, you don't need to use (and I wasn't able to get working anyway) wmodem or the dialer fro a BT connection.

XV6600 drivers

Not sure what is meant by "Then go into the Bluetooth settings and remove confirmation for paired devices"

Tried installing modem driver supplied by onstjohn and that didn't work either.

It really should not be this difficult and where the heck is the official documentation to perform this???

Will call Audiovox as a last resort.

Thanks for everyone's time.

You're making it too difficult on yourself. With a bluetooth connection there are no drivers to install, you simply pair the 6600 with the laptop and tell it it is a DUN connection. I just set mine up (finally) on last Saturday and it amazed me how simple it was (I was expecting some difficulty) and it was up and running in a couple of minutes.

Racedog...Please see my original post.

The laptop and the XV6600 communicate via Bluetooth in that the XV6600 asks me if I want to accept the connection from the laptop. After I choose accept...nothing happens...and eventually I get the error which I posted originally.

I don't think I'm the one making it hard on myself! Something just isn't working!

I think we need to get more specifi here. When you tell the 6600 to search, what type of profile do you select? Give us a little more detailed step by step and I'll post my step by step here for you to follow also. However, you may have to remind me since it will be at least Friday before I can do that since my wife is having surgery tomorrow and I will not be around or checking this forum for at least that day and will likely be busy for a few days after that but will get this done for you.

Thanks Racedog...This is definitely not a priority. Take care of your wife first.

My laptop and XV6600 are successfully paired. I've successfully performed a file transfer between the 2 devices using the bluetooth.

I've tried a 2nd USB Bluetooth device on the laptop and am getting the same results. The actions I'm performing are as follows...

Go into "My Bluetooth Places" on laptop.
View Devices
Right-click on Pocket_PC and choose Connect Dial-up Networking
Prompted on XV6600 to accept or deny connection.
Choose Accept
Connect Bluetooth Connection window appears on laptop.
The following information is entered...
Username - area code + cell phone #@vzw3g.com
Password - vzw
Save this username and password for anyone using computer
Dial #777
Choose Dial
Prompted to accept or deny on PPC
Choose accept
Laptop says dialing #777 and then timesout in about 30 seconds with the error which was originally posted.
Have to reboot XV6600 to get Internet Access back.

That's it! Thanks for your help!

It wouldn't recognize the modem driver provided.

Lets try to debug bluetooth.

First, go to bluetooth settings->services->dialup networking server->ONLY check enable service
Then try using it as a dial up modem

If that works start turning things on one by one.

I don't recommend leaving it in that mode because anyone with a bluetooth laptop can connect using your phone.

One member, reported that he just unchecked Authentication required and it worked great for him. The only downside is that all data between the phone and computer is sent unencrypted.

Also, something else may be wrong because the PPC should only ask you once to accept or deny connection, not twice.

Lastly, just for sanity check, can you post all your device data including bluetooth stack.

start->settings->system->device information

bluetooth settings->about

Don't run wmodem on the XV6600 for a bluetooth connection - it's unecessary and can cause the issues you see. (I know it says it has a bluetooth option, you don't need it; and in my experience, it doesn't work). All you need is bluetooth on.

You mean the Pocket PC is not connected to the PC.
You have wmodem on the Pocket PC.
Activesync USB connection disabled on the PC.
The cdma1x_usbmdm.inf accessible to the PC to install as a driver for the "Modem" (Pocket PC). (I've put the .inf file in my C:\WINDOWS\INF and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directories so that the driver is always available on the PC)
You selected wmodem.exe on the Pocket PC, selected usb from the drop down menu, pressed start on wmodem, THEN conected the PPC by USB to your PC, and it would not install the driver? It would seem to me you may have missed a step, such as disabling the activesync usb connection, or selecting usb from the menu in wmodem, or not starting wmodem before you connect it to your PC. This method has worked for everyone else. You are running MS windows? I realize you would prefer bluetooth, but if we can get you online, then work on your preference....

onstjohn...

The laptop detects the USB connected XV6600. When I point it to the drivers everyone is recommending it says it does not find an appropriate driver at that location.

Gentlemen...we have a winner. Mr IvanLasston's recommendation to remove any authentication, encryption etc. corrected the problem.

I can connect with a 900kbs connection to the phone. The only problem I did notice was if an incoming phonecall arrives while you are browsing the web it drops the data connection. I ended up rebooting the XV6600 to re-establish and had to kill the program on the laptop as it was not responding.

I thank everyone for their input.

I will now go back in and re-enable security etc. one by one and see if I can pin it down to a specific setting or settings and will post my results back here.

Thanks Again!

After disabling all the security options for the Dial-Up Networking Bluetooth connection on the laptop and the XV6600, I re-enabled them one by one and it still worked. Go figure!

If I get any other results down the road I will post back to this group.

Thanks for all your help.

Looks like you already resolved your problem and got it working. My wife's surgery went fine last Thursday but I was very busy with things that needed to be done and one person instead of two to do them.

I would be interested in hearing the results of adding the items back on one at a time and seeing if you find one that causes an issue.
