All,
I am coming from the Danger Hiptop / Sidekick II camp and loved the fact that the device seemed to be always on the internet. By that I mean, I could be logged on to AIM all day and have people IM me on the go, email was checked all day, etc.
Are these features possible with the 6600? I am really interested in being able to just leave my AIM on all day but does that mean that my EV-DO connection will have to be on all day and thus drain through my battery?
You don't need EV-DO to accomplish this. I have AIM on my ppc-6600 and have it set to keep me connected. I have no issues with it. As far as battery use, I charge mine via a car charger and never notice anything.

Your biggest concerns will be:
1.) Battery life. Active data-transfer sucks battery fast. (just have a 'link' so to say.. doesn't. But transferring lots of data can).
Search these forums for more posts on the subject. (The v. 3 batteries work great from the sounds of it. Initial versions had stability issues).
2.) Your bigger problem, will be that if somebody calls you and you're transfering data, the call goes directly to voice mail. (No there's no way around this, yes this applies to sprint and verizon.). You can have aim-up, but if you're chatting.. the call will go to voice mail.
If you're not chatting? The call will go through, but AIM will drop the connection. You'll have to re-login after the call.
Cheers and good luck. (And.. yes, 'true' connectivity in the nature you want I think is a pipe-dream at the moment. One can make compromises and be very happy. If you're unwilling to compromise, you're simply f*edit*..).

This is not true in Verizon EVDO areas. If you have an active data connection, it will drop the data for voice as long as you are in EVDO. I don't know about Sprint EVDO but I suspect its the same. Maybe luv2chill or skippyrq can do that test.
Even so you will have to re-login after your voice call is done like bfaber said.
For sprint anyway, it's a 1-way pipe; you can receive the aim via SMS but not reply to it. When I go this route, I usually return the message via SMS ot the originator's phone...

Thanks for the reply guys. Now, according to what you are saying is that if I am chatting with someone, my calls will go over to VM, however if I am just logged onto IM then I will be able to take the call?
Im not sure I understand this because if I know the service like I think I do, then AIM is always sending packets to appear online. Can someone test this out for me?
I have used AIM a fiar bit on my 601, and it appears to me from observing the activity/dormancy indicator (which the verizon ones don't have, it's replaced by a signal type indicator) that AIM allows the data connection to remain dormant MOST OF THE TIME and still stays connected. However, I also added to my outgoing vmail msg a warning that just because the call got sent straight to voicemail, I may still be on, and the send a text message or try again. Both Sprint and Verison allow the sending of a "call-back" number as a text message.

That has been shown to be incorrect. EVDO is up and down MUCH quicker, leading to almost no 'on the net' time for most applications.
Various people have pulled really large files and then tried to call their Verizon phone.
'Same issue.
For 'praticle' usage... its virtually unnoticable though.

So how does this principle apply to AIM? Does that mean that I can get calls inbetween messages?

I don't use AIM, but yes, you can receive calls in an EVDO area during data connection. If I am streaming music in an EVDO area, a call will still come through. Data connection suspends, and you can take the call.

I am not sure by who, but I have first hand experience. I have an EVDO Verizon XV6600. when streaming audio, when wireless syncing, when doing a speed test, in EVDO areas, all are interupted by the call. The wireless sync stops, the Streaming audio says cannot connect to stream, the speed test stalls, but the call comes through.

I have an active VNC to my home going right now on EVDO. I just tried to call and it went to VM immediately.
I wonder how skippy is accessing his VNC. Via web or terminal services.
If I connect the 6600 as a modem, it will turn the "radio" off and not let calls access. But if I am surfing or streaming, it will ring the phone and disconnect the data.
Also skippy, aren't you on Sprint? Like I said I suspected EVDO on Sprint to be the same but no data to back it up.
mwfielder is right. If I am using the 6600 with DUN(as a modem), everything goes straight to VM regardless of coverage.
Anyway, digitalgm, on Verizon, if I have agile messenger up(agile is the messenger to use IMHO, it does all the major ims) and a call comes in, it disconnects and I take the call. Same if I make a call. I just reconnect when done.
Ok, this is the type of information I was looking for. Thank you very much!
