why can't the BT800 automatically take calls

I have the PPC6600 with 3500 (unit already had 3500 ROM). But I keep having problems answering calls with the BT800. I have even tried it to autimatically transfer to headset after 2 rings without luck. Any suggesstions?

BT800

I had the BT800 -- and was informed that it simply did not sound good -- like I was very far away. Even though I was very far away from the person I was speaking with -- I had the BT800 on my ear (which does happen to be in the same state as me). Maybe the distance was due to the short boom -- it is very short.

In fact, I don't understand the physics of these things when the boom is that short. How the heck can it pick up your voice (and not pick up other voices/sounds) when you are speaking in a direction away from the microphone and the the mike is that far away???

The mic picks up more of your voice than other sounds mainly because it it a lot closer to your voice than the other sources of sound. Some usually unimportant technical details aside, if you double the distance from a source to the microphone then you cut the amplitude of that source by a factor of four, and if you triple the distance from the source then you cut the amplitude by a factor of nine. So if your microphone is five inches from your mouth, then things fifty inches from that microphone (like your footsteps, maybe) will be 100 times smaller in amplitude.

So a good deal of the headset problem is getting the microphone far enough from the earpiece that the microphone doesn't pick up the earpiece sound and generate an echo. In still air with low background noise, this approach should work fine.

On the other hand, in environments with wind, this is a problem. Or in any case where the sound arriving at your head is similar in amplitude as your voice. In these cases, every little bit closer that you can get the microphone to your mouth and all the shielding you can get on your ear helps. Check out television announcers at NASCAR for what this is like. One of the most famous microphones for this sort of thing is the BBC/Coles 4104 "Lip" microphone. When the noise gets even higher you get those full mouth covering microphones such as they use on airport taxiways.

Somewhere between the "no worries" environment and the airport taxiway is real life. For me, that means big booms and earpieces, probably over the head support. Haven't found a lot of stuff that works so far. Motorola HS820 relates just fine to the phone, but I can barely hear anything and the other side of the conversation can hear me even less.

Anyone tried the Blue Parrott B100?

Thanks Zen.

So that's the story. Makes a lot of sense to me. What doesn't make sense is that these headsets don't have longer booms. It seems like a telescopic boom would make the most sense. Also of course, a windshield would help.

Now how can I get that to a manufacturer and get some credit for it.

Well Fellowes already makes the Body Glove branded "BlueVoice" which has a telescopic boom. Not long enough in my opinion, but it's the headset that works best for me so far. The windscreen is found on at least the Cardo Scala-500; probably others as well.

Guess we can all wait for the Sennheiser BW900

Good to know Zen.

Do you think the Body Glove is as good as the Sony HBH and the LogiTech which are also rated highly?

Also, let me ask you this. Can a Blue Tooth headset ever be as good as a wired headset? It seems like there has to be considerable loss and interference in Bluetooth compared to even a mediocre wired set.

A Bluetooth headset _could_ be as good as wired, and without that much trouble. But it appears to me after a few days experimentation that none of the ones I've tried are as good yet.

Bluetooth has the bandwidth to support way better quality than we need, and this should be possible to use for better robustness and range. Nobody has to invent anything new - the people that decided how the headset and handset would communicate just have to make a better decision. They have to be willing to let us burn more processing to get the quality we need. They know about these problems - they would have to be idiots not too.

But they might be betting that we would pay them all this money and not really complain that much if it doesn't work well.

Based on the survey results, it looks like the Sony HBH 300 and 660 and the Logitech Freedom appear to be very good. 100% of the people that rated the HBH 300 rated it good vs poor with a sample size of 17. Have you tried any of these models -- they appear to be doing something right.

OK now I've had HBH-300 experience to add, although no Logitech yet.

HBH-300 works well for volume and microphone sound quality. Unfortunately, I can't figure out any way for it to stay on my head other than very precariously. I'm might try figuring out how to adapt some other method of attachment or support to the HBH-300.

The BlueVoice smokes the HBH-300 for wearability. It's not quite as good for microphone sound as the HBH-300 but it's better than others. It's not perfect but at the moment the BlueVoice is the one I'm using.

The Bluevoice battery ran down today and I switched over to the Cardo Scala-500 and it was definitely a step down in volume.

I guess gluing or stapling it to your head is out of the question. It sounds like you are much too smart of a fellow to risk damage to the cerebellum.

It sounds like the Sony has got it over the Bodyglove regarding sound -- which is kind of what a telephone is all about. Let me know if you get to the Logitech. If I get one I'll be sure to report in.

My company has gotten 5 total XV6600 for 5 people. With more on the way. That is where all the headsets came from. I also like to experiment. I have bought the Logitech Mobile Freedom, the hbh-660 and the Jabra BT800. My coworkers have bought the logitech bluetooth, the hbh-300, and the Mot hs820.

The hbh-660 worked well but it hurt my ear after a while. Plus it started disconnecting. I turned it over to a friend that has a Sony Erricson Cell phone. The Mobile Freedom still sounds the best but with my XV it has trouble staying connected. With another XV it stays conected fine. Go figure. I picked up the BT 800 yesterday after too many disconnects with the Logitech.

I think I am going to turn the BT 800 back. It stays connected better than the Logitech, but the sound quality isn't as good. (People on the other end always report me as choppy) Plus it takes longer to answer incoming calls. The caller ID is nice, but you cannot initiate phone calls from the headset.

I have started using the Shure Quiet Spot Boom (wired - not Bluetooth) headset. It's audio in both directions is way ahead of any of the Bluetooth headsets I've tried so far. Now presumably Shure could make a Bluetooth version but I'm guessing that is not in the cards at the moment. It's not extremely comfortable for me yet either.

IvanLasston,

Any review on the other headsets you mentioned?
Specifically in terms of audio quality to both parties, volume to the wearer, and comfort?

I have had the Jabra BT250v and the BT800.

Sent the BT800 back - same troubles as everyone else. Not all that comfortable, most of the time I miss calls because to start Verizon will only send a call to your cell phone once the caller on the other end has already heard 2 rings, which only leaves 2 rings for you to answer with, and the BT800 just won't do it.

The BT250v is good, a little bit of static if you put your XV6600 in your pocket, and callers on the other end can hear a lot of noise in the wind, but overall, a decent lower costing headset - and by far the lowest profile on your head.

So gave the BT250v to my wife for use with her Motorolla - she loves it.

Looking to get the Plantronics M3500 (though not impressed with the battery life) or the Sony HBH-662 or the HBH-300.

Would love to know what you or any others thought of these headsets!

Big Dome

Does anyone have any input for people with big heads? I have trouble finding sunglasses that fit right. Do I have to go with a boom?

Wink Tekkeon eztalker mini

I have read a lot of very positive feedback and reviews about this one on XV6600. The price is quite friendly. I think the only problem with it is it's relatively shorter range comparing to other competitor's premium models. But I heard that the connection, reliability and sound quality is unbeatable...

The Jabra BT800 works great at over 35 feet for me, however, it takes a little fiddling to make it answer. Hanging up is 1 click!
