Easy toggle for Phone Flight Mode (to turn phone on and off)

This place is so full of superb info, sometimes it amazes me.

Thanks to Bob Duckworth (RDUCKWOR1)

A REALLY easy hack to allow you to toggle the flight mode on or off with just a single button push.

Ok...so who can get my speakerphone to map to a single button other than phone on?

Carl

HOW TO:

This appeared here on PDAPHONEHOME first...

>>As you know, the VZW 6600 doesn't natively support the "End Call" radio off feature that the SPCS device does. With VZW you had to tap the antenna icon and select "Flight Mode" to shut the radio down.

With this hack, your "end Call" button will now function just like the SPCS device.

You need registry editor software - any will do. Be careful and make sure you're comfortable dabbling in the guts of your OS. Here's the procedure:

1. Get the PHM REGISTRY HACK APP (the FREE version will do)
Note: Resco Explorer 2003 has one in it already

2. Open that app up and make sure you are at MY DEVICE.

3. Highlight MY DEVICE by tapping it once, if you are on a Verizon phone it will be a folder labeled My Registry

4. Go to bottom screen and click on TOOLS and than FIND and type the word below and hit FIND NEXT.

flightmodeswitchbypnhendkey

(you can also just type the first part I'm sure it will find it).

5. Open that, and just switch the VALUE DATA from 0 TO 1.

6. Hit OK and when you are out, and reset your ppc.

Now your set and ready to do what you wanted for FREE!

Good Hacking,

Bob Duckworth

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

YOU ARE THE MAN. You rock!

Not only does the hack work!!! It turns the Flight mode (ie the phone's radio itself) both ON and OFF !!!!! Its a toggle!!! To work it...

Turn Phone off.....[hold phoneoff button for 4 seconds...release.....wait a sec for it to show up on the icon]

Turn Phone on....[hold phoneoff button for 4 seconds....release.....wait about 5 sec for it to show up on icon]

Too cool. Just way too cool!!

And it takes 2 min.

(BTW, if you have RESCO File Explorer 2003, it has a registry editory already...it is a change of one character.)

Thanks!

Carl

ps. It absolutely does survive a reset.

pss. Wouldn't you think this would be a huge and valuable feature????? Why would they NOT implement this?

Works like a charm on my VZW XV, thanks! Note to those with the bluetooth hack: this seems to work with enabling /disabling BT. I get no memory errors when using the end button.

One edit to the instuctions... if using Resco, you'll find and highlight "My Registry" not "My Device".

Thanks again!

I can't take credit. Someone far smarter than I came up with this and posted it some time ago on this forum. Credit where credit is due.

Glad it helped.

Doesn't holding the End Call button turn the speaker phone on? Won't this conflict with the hack?

Speakerphone is toggled by holding down the make call button, this hack is to enable the end call button to turn off the radio. On the Sprint 6601 it's already set that way, for some reason the Verizon devices apparently aren't...

Pressing the Call button (green button) turns speakerphone on and off, not the red End button.

Could someone post the exact registry localtion (HKLM/etc, etc). I have a different reg program (RegEditCe.exe) and the FIND feature apparently doesn't work. Thanks.

I just enabled this hack and it does work great, however, holding down the end key used to terminate an active CDMA2000 connection. Now in order to terminate that connection I basically have to turn the cellular radio off and on. Or am I missing something...

Dmotto:

It is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER

---> Control Panel

-----------> PhoneExtendFunction

-----------------> CDMA

------------------------> flightmodeswitchbypnhendkey

Just Change DWORD data to 1

Make sure your patched the right registry key. My end key will still terminate the current call. Perhaps some other piece of software has hijacked you "end" key function.

That's correct. This hack, although nice, now takes away the ability to disconnect data with a button. I applied the hack and realized I turn off data more often than flight mode, so I undid the hack.

Can you elaborate on this. If you hold the button to turn off flight mode, doesn't this also terminate a data session (no signal)?

Or did the "end" key before end the session with one press?

Holding down the red, end call button on your 6600 will terminate a data session but leave the phone/radio still on for calls. Much more usefull to me than having a quick way to turn flight mode off and on which I personally rarely do.

I did not know this. Perhaps this explains the programming difference between the SPCS device and the VZW device. I didn't understand why VZW did not implement the "button radio off" aspect of the XV6600 as SPCS did with their version.

Perhaps if SPCS users modified their registry to do away with the kill radio function of the end key it might have an impact on the "Beep of Death" issue. That is, they could use the end button to absolutely terminate data connections when they finished with them.

Bob, I think that Bartlane has said it the way that I should have. Although it is a nice feature, you have to decide which is more conveinient for you; having the ability to turn the cellular radio off, or having the ability to quickly end a data connection.
I found that with the hack enabled, you can still end the data connection but you are basically shutting down the cellular and bluetooth radios, then starting them again. Which obviously takes more time than just terminating a data link.
I changed the Reg key back to '0'.
