Talking Add GPS, you won't regret it if you travel....

Amazing. I travle about 30% of my time in and out of state. I used to print off a series of maps to chart my way, but I pitty da fool that stops off for dinner on the way to the hotel and gets lost.

Now, it is a thing of the past for me. GPS with a good map set up is cheap and high value, for a business traveler it is the killer app behind remote email. The thing I love best is using my contact base to quickly set up my next destination. Heck, I even tun on the speeding alerts for a little extra thrill.

The BEST site is (http://www.gpspassion.com). They have great advice, and if you join for 10 bucks they give you direct advice, special access, and a coupon that saved me $18 bucks off my set up. Not a bad way to go.

I bought a BT i.trek with the i.guidance software at Semsons (http://store.yahoo.com/semsons-inc/gpshardware.html), if you go to the build your own PPC bundle (http://store.yahoo.com/semsons-inc/builyourowng.html) you can get the bundle for $180, and then take 10% off that, plus shipping and tax if you are in CA. Hard to beat a highly rated, awesome GPS pack for under $200!

If you had posted this a day earlier, I could have saved $30.

I ordered those two items, yesterday, and paid $230 (plus shipping.)

Well, even paying a bit more I think you will be thrilled with the capabilties. I even use it when driving around town to warn me when I am speeding, not that it makes much difference. It is refreshing though to see BT work consistently.

When I got my iPaq 5555, I finally had gotten into BlueTooth GPS...absolutely great. Prior to that I was using the Navman package with a cabled GPS unit. Even then, GPS was a great feature to have, but the cord killed the mood.

Witht the integrated BlueTooth of the iPaq, I finally got a Socket BT unit and haven't looked back. Never mind it saves your arse on a business trip, but I've also used to go geocaching, house hunting, bike trips, and 'get loss' driving weekends.

IMO, way better than a dedicated car setup: Cheaper, portable, portability leads to versatility. Plus, I understand some car manufacturers make you subscribe to a service to get updated maps and directions...

Join (http://www.gpspassion.com) for $10 donation and they will give you a 10% off coupon.

I like Impact Wireless (http://www.impactwireless.ca/) for other stuff, they have fair prices and good service (except when stuff is on backorder ); kep in mind their $ are canadian so use a currency calculator to figure out your true costs. IMPPPH10 will save you 10 bucks on a Covertec case purchase and they "should" be in any minute.

The iTrek and iGuidence sure seem like a sweet deal for those doing the GPS thing. I'd like to get those two, as the directions to get me places would be sweet.

However, I have a 12" PowerBook and would like to get software that works with it. Even if I have to get iGuidence AND a Mac program to do it. But I'm having trouble finding Mac software that provides "Voice Directions" as you travel like iGuidence does for Windows and the Pocket PC. Anyone have any suggestions there?

Just got that combo. Thanks for the advice. I already have awesome GPS but will be taking it onto the golf course with star caddy. You wouldn't happen to know any good golf GPS software out there would you? Thanks.

Hey 1of20,

what BT stack are you currently using? I had to upgrade to 3500 because of drop offs and other issues, if this combo works with 3500, than I am sold.

3500 C is the stack I am on, grabbed it off this forum. I am blown away that the BT connection works, really a sight to behold, so rare compared to headsets....never a drop, never an issue.

Ok, I'm ready. I'm heading out of town this weekend and wanted to order something tonight or in the morning and get it here by Friday.

I had an 2000 Acura TL with Nav and LOVED it. Gave directions, showed long, lat, spoke to me, told me when I was approaching. At first I thought it was a toy, then when I sold the Acura, I realized I missed it big time!!

I like the idea of having a mobile GPS so I can switch cars or whatever.

the site above looks great, but I don't have DAYS to read it over.

Can someone give me some pointers on what I should be looking for and help me cut through all the stuff out there? A neighbor says he wants TomTom because of the 3D view.

ANY and ALL help is greatly appreciated!!

Talking Yes, the UI and organization is not the best....

I asked Guillaume who runs GPS and preferences are highly subjective. The net-net is that he endorsed the i.trek and i.guidance combo, saying that would be a solid choice and one he would buy for himself.

i.guidance is the highest rated software pack by a reasonable margin. This is a good overview of software. (http://www.gpspassion.com/en/software/NavOverview.htm)

Unfortunately, the hardware side is not as succinct but I love the i.trek. Small, fast, good battery life, and connects well over BT. Lot's of minutia around hardware but the i.trek and i.guidance get 5 stars from me.

Great input. Thanks. I'll go do some reading.

What do you use yours for? Only in the car? How about walking, hiking or camping?

My boys are finally old enough to really take hiking and camping and it would be nice to have something I could use that way as well. For the PPC, I would have to turn EVERYTHING off to get the battery to stretch out a bit, but it could be done if it was just turned on every once in awhile to verify location.

Mainly, mine would be in my vehicle. Camping/hiking is secondary.

What features to you have/use? I'm going to read about it, but tell me about things like:

Long/Lat
Speed
Speaking directions to you
etc.

(A friend says he is looking for this:

distance to next turn
distance to destination
est time of arrival (contantly recalculated)
automatic route re-calculation if you get off course
find nearby places (gas stations, fast food, etc
verbal prompts
)

THANKS!!

What's your Geocaching.com user name? I've been down with back issues lately... itching to get back out there on the hunt!
Question: do you use iGuidance for caching? Do you know if it supports gpx files? I'm contemplating the "i" package, but want to be sure it works with my cachin addiction

Ever check out GolfWits? http://www.golfwits.com/software/gol...asp?id=6122750 I used an older version with great success. I'm not sure it integrates with a GPS, but it does everything else you can imagine

Oh god, what have I done?

LONG day at work today. Should have come home and made a drink. Instead, I sat down in front of the PC, and started reading.

Have the Logitech Mobile Freedom Headset on the way from NewEgg.com. Sounds like my Covertec Black leather case will ship tomorrow. The 2000 mAH battery is on order at Lion Batteries, so that's "covered" per se. And I just got a Nintendo DS the other day to replace my Game Boy Advance.

So what did I do? Went out to Semsons.com, and looked at the Create-Your-Own-Package page. Had already decided thanks to the folks here that the iTrip Bluetooth GPS and iGuidence software would be my choice if I was gonna purchase such items. Well, I put the items in my shopping cart. (BAD IDEA!!! )

Once there, I looked for an online coupon for Semsons without joining GPSPassion.com. It was nothing personal, and I don't mean to rile feathers... but the site was a little hard to navigate to find what I was looking for, and I wasn't thrilled about paying $10 to save $18 = $8 off. So, I did a search for semsons coupon on Yahoo and found a $9 off coupon available. I used that, and it paid for the shipping to my address... so the whole purchase would be $180 even.

Well, work mailed W-2 forms recently. One of my co-workers already got his and filed his return last night. Figuring mine will be along shortly, I went ahead and bought the unit. If policy holds, Semsons should ship my items tomorrow and I'll have them before the weekend. Giving me some time to test the units locally before using them on Superbowl Sunday.

As a tech head, I'm very excited to see how well all this works, and play with my new toys. I just hope I use them as much as I better at this price... and they don't just collect dust in a drawer.

P.S. I realize most of you probably don't use Mac's or OS X, but if anyone does know of any good GPS software that would let me use the iTrek with my 12" PowerBook... I'm still clueless as to what software packages I might be able to buy.

**I use mine for the car, I travel a lot and need airport to hotel, sidetrip for food, back to hotel over to customer, side trip for food, off to airport, etc. The ability to find an ATM, or the closest Taco Bell dynamicly, and then get back on course is priceless, at least for me...

Don't do the camping thing much anymore.**

What features to you have/use? I'm going to read about it, but tell me about things like:

Long/Lat
**Never use**

Speed
**Use to amuse myself, it is cool to have it warn you when you are speeding the first 20 times, after that it gets a bit old. Would use though in areas I am not a regular.**

Speaking directions to you
etc. **Awesome at that.**

(A friend says he is looking for this:

distance to next turn **does it verbally and with easy UI graphs**
distance to destination **ditto, with an update figure as you progress**
est time of arrival (contantly recalculated) **have not seen that yet, but given our traffic would be pretty hard**
automatic route re-calculation if you get off course **does that in spades**
find nearby places (gas stations, fast food, etc **ditto**
verbal prompts **has a good voice guidance system**
)

THANKS!!

WOW! Thanks!!! Great info and quick. I really appreciate it. I guess I know where I am heading to.....

....Don't camp anymore, huh? Spent enough time on the cold, hard, damp ground?? As a former Scoutmaster, the father of 4 boys (14, 11, 7, 5) and a leader in my church youth group, I think I will have camping and such in my future for some time!! Actually, I love the outdoors and wish I could be out more. I am kind of a strange one; Love to be outdoors in nature, but like to bring along batteries and such for all my electronic gadgets!!!! A man HAS to have his toys!

Off to do a quick read and probably order............
