So I'm thinking, let's get a thread going with possible fixes that can be made to the XV6600 before VZW public launch.
VZW is tight lipped about updates and says that is a decision of the manufacturer. Audiovox thinks the XV6600 is golden and doesn't anticipate any updates coming out.
The XV6600 is a great machine with huge potential. It would be a shame to let this unit go w/o addressing some of it's shortfalls. Some items I'd liked to see addressed:
- BlueTooth connectivity with headsets needs to be corrected. PDA and headsets 'lose' each other once PDA is turned off. So far this has happened with a Moto HS810, Plantronics m3500, and Jabra BT250 (Audiovox reported succesful tests with the BT250).
- Today Screen: Status icons need to be better organized or made easier to notice. Multiple instances (BT headset connect, voicemail, text message, etc.) cause speaking bubble icon that has to be clicked in order to see what status icons appeared.
- Speaker volume: When using PDA to take/make calls, speaker volume is extremely low, even on high settings.
- Data mode: There needs to be a way for the user to switch between 1xRTT and EV-DO when both systems are available. This really is a joint problem has Audiovox needs to implement the feature but VZW also has to realize that it may not be possible and the PDA plan needs to be adjusted to allow EV-DO access.
- Windows Mobile: Existing users should recieve free upgrade to Mobile Media Player 10. Apparently Microsoft is not releasing it as a download and it's only being made available to machines using Windows Mobile:SE...which is what is loaded on the XV6600
- Corded Headsets: Issue with PDA being turned off and calls going to PDA and not headset needs to be looked into.
That's really all I can think of...I'm pretty sure something else will come to mind.

Add the Moto HS820 to that list too...
Also ive been having a bug where my phone has the "Text Message Sent" bubble stay on for long periods of time before going away.
Originally posted by aarong According to the rep's I've talked to EV-DO is included with the PDA plan. What are you referring to?
Well, when I activated my 6600, the rep advised me I had to take a data plan and that would give me unlimited usage. So everytime I tried to access the Internet in EV-DO, I got a bad user name/password error. Whenever I was in 1xRTT, everything was fine.
So I called back to tech support and the first person advised me that the PDA Plan only covers NationalAccess. Unless the VZW website has been changed, the plan description also states that. So I explained that it's not my fault I live in an area that has both systems and that there isn't a way to force the phone to use 1xRTT. He really didn't care and tried to sell me on the $79.99 plan.
Called back to tech support and got a much more reasonable person. I explained the situation again and we tried a few things to get it into 1xRTT mode...no go. He said he'd call back and when he did, he advised me that there is no known way to force the phone to use 1xRTT and he would add the feature code for EV-DO at no charge.
It's quite possible that with more users getting the phone and more areas cutting over to EV-DO that VZW is now including this feature with the PDA plan.
I just checked the VZW website again and if you look under Plans and at the PDA plan, it still states NationalAccess, nothing about BroadBandAccess.
EDIT:
The issue about the text messaging icon...pain in the arse. I don't care that the message stays up there, I just don't need separate messages to indicate the message was sent and then the message was delivered....issue noted!!

Speaker Volume, I dought can be fixed with software.
As far as bubble. It works pretty good on Sprint Phone. You click and then it shows multiple icons. And each Icon can be clicked on and hidden. If more than 1 is not hidden the bubble stays.
If only one is not hidden that Icon shows instead of bubble.

That is the same as VzW. I really think the bubble is a function of Windows. I haven't found it to be a big deal, really. For those that use Dashboard or Wis Bar, how does it look? The same bubble or something different?
Nice overview Big Calhoun. Basically everything in this thread is happening to me. Of course everyone's aware of the Bluetooth v 1.0 issue on the 6600. I talked to a district sales rep in a Verizon store one day and he called me the next and said Verizon is developing a software upgrade to v 1.1. I can't figure out whether or not BT v 1.2 hardware is backward compatible with v 1.1. Does anyone know? Has anyone heard how or when the v 1.1 update will be released?
As for the Bluetooth issue - the rep was referring to the revision of the Bluetooth stack on the phone (which as shipped is v1.0.0 2400, patched is v1.0.0 3500); NOT the Bluetooth standard to which it adheres (which is 1.1). The stack supports 1.1 functionality - period. I'm not even sure what 1.2 brings to the table; but lets focus on getting the basics down pat first, eh? (-:
As for issues, Bluetooth stability is numero uno. Second has to be the SMS confirmation "feature". Third, we need the correct profile to get VoiceCommand to work over Bluetooth. That is this phones killer app.

This issue, more than anything else, seems to be influencing my decision to return the phone.
I also doubt the 1/2 duplex function can be solved at all. If you try to interrupt your caller in the middle of a long sentence he/she will start breaking up on speaker phone. Combine low volume with breaking up, and you've got a useless speaker phone.
There are a couple additional issues that I see intermittantly disappearing control panel icons - they come back after a restart out of memory errors - I see this most often trying to start Pocket Informant, but other apps have generated this message. The app will run after a restart.
I also share the volume and bluetooth issues that seem to bite everyone.

I think Dave from Potala Telly found the issue with the out of memory errors. Apparently, WME OS only allows 32mb for program dll's, meaning that only so much memory is allowed for the actual functioning of a program(s), no matter how much memory you actually have.
I am a phone user that wants a PDA with pushed email.
First off Phone Functionality needs to be addressed.
1. BT true functionality
2. Voice Dailing
3. Contact custom ringers
You can't intigrate BT without good voice integration. Voice Comand does not cut it. Voice Signal is great but the opening speed is poor and of course they don't sell as a free standing product.
The 6600 fully connecting to all car manufacturer's BT modules would be nice. This includes the ability to send / receive calls, transfer the phonebook, and check signal strength on the car's display (if available by the car.) It should also pair successfully with all BT compliant headsets.
That really doesn't sound like I'm asking too much. I've been exchanging e-mails with someone in the executive offices. He's been asking his contacts about the patch for the 6600 that's been rumored to be coming soon. Here are some of the replies he's gotten:
Quote:
have you heard anything regarding a software patch for the Audiovox XV6600?
Quote:
I have not but will check and get back to you. Please keep in mind that if Audiovox is releasing a software patch it must still go through testing by VZW. So it may take 30 plus days for this to be released to our customers.

At this time there is no software patch or update for the XV6600. As soon as information is available it will be posted on the Quality Assurance / Tech Bulletins page.
Since this info came from fairly high up on the food chain, I'm inclined to believe it. My 6600 is going back.
